“Crouching Terrorist, Lurking Author”: On the Terror Narrative in Zhang Chengzhi's and Xiao Bai's Historical Fiction
This article takes up a comparative reading of Zhang Chengzhi's Islamic fiction Investigation of Assassinations in the Western Province (1989) and Xiao Bai's historical thriller Blockade (2017), arguing that the two terrorism-themed novellas are constituents of world literature in the Age of Terror, an age that features crises of both history and representation. By conceiving world literature as a narrative event born out of the rupture of history, this article analyzes how two Chinese novelists, from the periphery and the center of national subjectivity, aim to act out the dubious complicity between the terrorist and the author. While Zhang's obsession with Jahriyya and extremist violence is entwined with his suspicion of the agency of narrative, Xiao Bai is inclined to consecrate the author as a divine source of explosive imagination, and to disenchant the readers' obsession with the closure of event. A universal claim based on my case study of contemporary Chinese literature thus emerges: placed in a broad continuum of post-9/11 crisis representation, these two novellas bear witness to the performative forces of world literature in rectifying the dominant national historiography and the subalternity of the dispossessed.</jats:p
Xiao (孝) – najtrwalsza z chińskich cnót i jej współczesne interpretacje
The objective of this article is to analyse contemporary interpretations of the
Chinese virtue called xiao. The author first describes the role and meaning of xiao
(mostly translated to English as filial piety) in traditional Chinese culture and society.
Then he analyses its contemporary interpretations in various sources, such as electronic
media, state television programs, popular culture, and thought of contemporary Chinese
philosophers. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the present-day notion
of xiao differs from that existing in the past. The earlier notion placed a strong emphasis
on obedience to parents’ wishes; nowadays this notion emphasizes concern
about parents’ emotional wellbeing, while giving children a higher degree of independence
A Comparative Study of the Translation of “Xiao” in
“ Xiao” is the foundation of traditional Chinese culture, and The Analects of Confucius, as an important part of traditional Chinese classical culture, is an indispensable sample for the study of Chinese “Xiao” culture, and has an irreplaceable position in the history of the foreign dissemination of Chinese classics. The English translation of The Analects of Confucius by Chinese and Western translators has its own distinctive features. This paper takes the English translations of The Analects ofConfucius by Ku Hung-Ming and James Legge as an example, and uses LancsBox, a new corpus analysis tool, to compare the similarities and differences of their translations of the core concept word “Xiao” and the reasons for the differences in translation. The author also proposes some suggestions for the future translation and dissemination of the Chinese classics from the English translation of “Xiao”

Considerations of uncertainty in robust optimisation of electromagnetic devices
Due to unavoidable uncertainties related to material properties and manufacturing processes, the robustness of the optimal solution must be considered when designing electromagnetic devices. In this paper, the worst-case optimisation (WCO) and the worst-vertex-based WCO are proposed to evaluate the robustness of both performance and constraints under uncertainty. To reduce computing times when searching for the robust solution a predicted objective function is used, obtained with the help of a kriging algorithm which explores the searching space using the concept of rewards. Finally, to avoid some of the shortcomings of WCO, the concept of average performance evaluation is developed
