Polysemy or Synecdoche: A Case Study of Shou in Chinese

    No full text
This article investigates the Chinese character/word shou (hand) which occurs in such compounds as gao-shou (one who is skilled in some field), duo-shou (one who pilots a ship), xiong-shou (murderer), and xuan-shou (skillful player) in order to see whether it is better considered as a case of polysemy or synecdoche. According to the Chinese-Chinese dictionaries thumbed and consulted, the shou (hand) as mentioned above is treated as a case of polysemy. However, the author, after careful cognitive analysis, argues that the shou is better interpreted as a case of synecdoche rather than a case of polysemy

Complexity and retrograde analysis of the game Dou Shou Qi

    No full text
Dou Shou Qi is a game in which players control a number of pieces, aiming to move one of these onto a certain square. We will present a proof showing that this game is PSPACE-hard. Furthermore, we have implemented an analyzing engine and created an endgame tablebase containing all configurations with up to four pieces. These are the first steps towards theoretically solving the game. Finally, we report on some interesting patterns which we found by analyzing the endgame tablebase

Un historien sur le banc des accusés : Liu Zhiji juge Wei Shou

International audienceIn Liu Zhiji's Generalities on History (Shitong 史通), Wei Shou 魏收 (506-572) appears to be the counter-model of the ideal historian. Judged as partial, unfair and servile to the political power that employed him (the Northern Qi), Wei Shou, author of the Book of Wei (Weishu 魏書), is indeed the bugbear of the critic. The article aims to examine the formal and ideological particularities of the Book of Wei, as brought out by Liu Zhiji 劉知幾 (661-721). The numerous comments of Liu Zhiji shows that the question of political legitimity, especially the antagonism Northern states vs Southern states, count for much in his judgements on the historical works of and on the Early Medieval period (220-589).Dans le Traité de l'historien parfait (Shitong 史通) de Liu Zhiji 劉知幾 (661-721), Wei Shou 魏收 (506-572) fait figure de contre-modèle de l'historien idéal.

Nilotinib is effective in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase after imatinib resistance or intolerance: 24-month follow-up results

    No full text
Nilotinib is a potent selective inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase approved for use in patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase (CMLCP), and in CML-CP and CML-accelerated phase after imatinib failure. Nilotinib (400 mg twice daily) was approved on the basis of the initial results of this phase 2 open-label study. The primary study endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving major cytogenetic response (CyR). All patients were followed for > 24 months or discontinued early. Of 321 patients, 124 (39%) continue on nilotinib treatment. Overall, 59% of patients achieved major CyR; this was completeCyR(CCyR) in 44%. Of patients achieving CCyR,56% achieved major molecular response. CyRs were durable, with 84% of patients who achieved CCyR maintaining response at 24 months. The overall survival at 24 months was 87%. Adverse events were mostly mild to moderate, generally transient, and easily managed. This study indicates that nilotinib is effective, with a manageable safety profile, and can provide favorable long-term benefits for patients with CML-CP after imatinib failure. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT00109707.Hagop M. Kantarjian, Francis J. Giles, Kapil N. Bhalla, Javier Pinilla-Ibarz,Richard A. Larson, Norbert Gattermann, Oliver G. Initial molecular response at 3 months may predict both response and event-free survival at 24 months in Imatinib-resistant or -intolerant patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase treated with Nilotinib

    No full text
PURPOSE: The association between initial molecular response and longer-term outcomes with nilotinib was examined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with imatinib-resistant or -intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase from the phase II nilotinib registration study with available postbaseline BCR-ABL1 transcript assessments were included (N = 237). RESULTS: BCR-ABL1 transcript levels (International Scale [IS]) at 3 months correlated with complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) by 24 months. Patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 1% to ≤ 10% at 3 months with nilotinib had higher cumulative incidence of CCyR by 24 months than patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 10% (53% v 16%). BCR-ABL1 (IS) at 3 months predicted major molecular response (MMR) by 24 months. Cumulative incidence of MMR by 24 months for patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 0.1% to ≤ 1%, > 1% to ≤ 10%, and > 10% was 65%, 27%, and 9%, respectively. These differences were observed for patients with or without baseline BCR–ABL1 mutations and for those with imatinib resistance or intolerance. Estimated event-free survival (EFS) rates at 24 months decreased with higher transcript levels at 3 months; patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of ≤ 1% had an estimated 24-month EFS rate of 82%, compared with 70% for patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 1% to ≤ 10% and 48% for patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 10%. CONCLUSION: Patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of > 10% at 3 months had a lower cumulative incidence of CCyR and MMR and lower rates of EFS versus patients with BCR-ABL1 (IS) of ≤ 10%. Prospective studies may determine whether close monitoring or alternative therapies are warranted for patients with minimal initial molecular response.Susan Branford, Dong-Wook Kim, Simona Soverini, Ariful Haque, Yaping Shou, Richard C.
