Sparrows can't sing : East End kith and kinship in the 1960s
Sparrows Can’t Sing (1963) was the only feature film directed by
the late and much lamented Joan Littlewood. Set and filmed in
the East End, where she worked for many years, the film deserves
more attention than it has hitherto received. Littlewood’s career
spanned documentary (radio recordings made with Ewan MacColl
in the North of England in the 1930s) to directing for the stage
and the running of the Theatre Royal in London’s Stratford East,
often selecting material which aroused memories in local audiences
(Leach 2006: 142). Many of the actors trained in her Theatre
Workshop subsequently became better known for their appearances
on film and television. Littlewood herself directed hardly any material
for the screen: Sparrows Can’t Sing and a 1964 series of television
commercials for the British Egg Marketing Board, starring Theatre
Workshop’s Avis Bunnage, were rare excursions into an area of practice
which she found constraining and unamenable (Gable 1980: 32).
The hybridity and singularity of Littlewood’s feature may answer,
in some degree, for its subsequent neglect. However, Sparrows Can’t
Sing makes a significant contribution to a group of films made in
Britain in the 1960s which comment generally on changes in the
urban and social fabric. It is especially worthy of consideration,
I shall argue, for the use which Littlewood made of a particular
community’s attitudes – sentimental and critical – to such changes and
for its amalgamation of an attachment to documentary techniques
(recording an aural landscape on location) with a preference for nonnaturalistic
delivery in performance
Congenital Aortic Stenosis in Adults: Update on clinical outcome, diagnostic methods and pregnancy
Background and aim of the study:
The pulmonary autograft has been recommended as the valve of choice for aortic
valve replacement (AVR) in young women contemplating pregnancy. However,
current information on maternal and perinatal outcome of pregnancy in women with
pulmonary autograft valve replacement is limited.
Methods:
Using a nationwide Dutch registry (CONCOR) and a local Belgian tertiary care centre
database, 17 women (age range: 18-45 years) with pulmonary autograft valve
replacement were enrolled into the study. Twelve pregnancies were observed among
five different women, including one miscarriage and one elective abortion.
Results:
Clinically significant (non-)cardiac complications were documented in two of 10
completed pregnancies. Complications included: (I) placental abruption necessitating
Cesarean delivery at 29 weeks’ gestation, further complicated by postpartum
hemorrhage; and (II) preterm premature rupture of the membranes resulting in
premature delivery at 29 weeks’ gestation with postpartum demise of the immature
born child. Two women reported primary female infertility, but both became pregnant
after hormonal substitution therapy. Four women reported irregularities of their
natural menstrual cycle (menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, polymenorrhea,
oligomenorrhea, or amenorrhea).
Conclusions:
Successful pregnancy in women with pulmonary autograft valve replacement is
possible, although serious and clinically significant events occurred during gestation.
Infertility and menstrual cycle disorders appear to be more prevalent
Angels sing the blues
2013 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Angels Sing the Blues explores the layers of individual identity. The manuscript is meant to mimic the ebb and flow of an individual's emotions as they question what they believe and demonstrate through their actions. Using queer theory and Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands as a theoretical base, the manuscript explores identity issues related to gender roles, cultural and heritage, as well as faith and religion. The poet's identity is a product of madness and obsession; one which is blissful and difficult. In Angels Sing the Blues, the poet works to find harmony among what instinct tells her to do and what tradition begs her to consider
Ascertainment of Silent Myocardial Infarction in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (from the GLOBAL LEADERS Trial).
Q-wave myocardial infarction (QWMI) comprises 2 entities. First, a clinically evident MI, which can occur spontaneously or be related to a coronary procedure. Second, silent MI which is incidentally detected on serial electrocardiographic (ECG) assessment. The prevalence of silent MI after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the drug-eluting stent era has not been fully investigated. The GLOBAL LEADERS is an all-comers multicenter trial which randomized 15,991 patients who underwent PCI to 2 antiplatelet treatment strategies. The primary end point was a composite of all-cause death or nonfatal new QWMI at 2-years follow-up. ECGs were collected at discharge, 3-month and 2-year visits, and analyzed by an independent ECG core laboratory following the Minnesota code. All new QWMI were further reviewed by a blinded independent cardiologist to identify a potential clinical correlate by reviewing clinical information. Of 15,968 participants, ECG information was complete in 14,829 (92.9%) at 2 years. A new QWMI was confirmed in 186 (1.16%) patients. Transient new Q-waves were observed in 28.5% (53 of 186) of them during the follow-up. The majority of new QWMI (78%, 146 of 186) were classified as silent MI due to the absence of a clinical correlate. Silent MI accounted for 22.1% (146 of 660) of all MI events. The prevalence of silent MI did not differ significantly between treatment strategies (experimental vs reference: 0.88% vs 0.98%, p = 0.5027). In conclusion, we document the prevalence of silent MI in an all-comers population undergoing PCI in this large-scale randomized trial
