Intersystem soft handover for converged DVB-H and UMTS networks
Digital video broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) is the standard for broadcasting Internet Protocol (IP) data services to mobile portable devices. To provide interactive services for DVB-H, the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) can be used as a terrestrial interaction channel for the unidirectional DVB-H network. The converged DVB-H and UMTS network can be used to address the congestion problems due to the limited multimedia channel accesses of the UMTS network. In the converged network, intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS is needed for an optimum radio resource allocation, which reduces network operation cost while providing the required quality of service. This paper deals with the intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS in such a converged network. The converged network structure is presented. A novel soft handover scheme is proposed and evaluated. After considering the network operation cost, the performance tradeoff between the network quality of service and the network operation cost for the intersystem soft handover in the converged network is modeled using a stochastic tree and analyzed using a numerical simulation. The results show that the proposed algorithm is feasible and has the potential to be used for implementation in the real environment

Quench characteristics of a Cu-Stabilized 2G HTS conductor
The prospect of medium/high field superconducting magnets using 2G HTS tapes is approaching to reality with continued enhancement in the performance of these conductors. Direct measurements of 1d adiabatic quench initiation and propagation of a Cu-stabilized 2G conductor have been carried out with spatial-temporal recording of temperature and voltage following the deposition of various local heat pulses to the conductor at different temperatures between 40K and 64K carrying different transport currents. It was found that the stabilizer-free 2G tape maintains the unique characteristics previously measured in non-stabilized tape of increasing MPZ with transport current and higher quench energy at lower temperatures. The minimum quench energy, minimum propagation zone (MPZ) length are determined as a function of temperature and transport current. The change in MPZ size is investigated with measured temperature dependent E-J characteristics. The results add more detail to help understand the unique characteristics of increasing MPZ with transport current and lower temperatures
Linear-time algorithms for computing maximum-density sequence segments with bioinformatics applications
AbstractWe study an abstract optimization problem arising from biomolecular sequence analysis. For a sequence A of pairs (ai,wi) for i=1,…,n and wi>0, a segment A(i,j) is a consecutive subsequence of A starting with index i and ending with index j. The width of A(i,j) is w(i,j)=∑i⩽k⩽jwk, and the density is (∑i⩽k⩽jak)/w(i,j). The maximum-density segment problem takes A and two values L and U as input and asks for a segment of A with the largest possible density among those of width at least L and at most U. When U is unbounded, we provide a relatively simple, O(n)-time algorithm, improving upon the O(nlogL)-time algorithm by Lin, Jiang and Chao. We then extend this result, providing an O(n)-time algorithm for the case when both L and U are specified
Downlink Space–Time Spreading Using Interference Rejection Codes
In this paper, the authors will investigate the performance of a loosely synchronized (LS) code-based space–time spreading (STS) scheme in comparison to that of classic Walsh code and pseudonoise code-based STS when communicating over dispersive Nakagami-m multipath channels. Closed-form formulas are derived for characterizing the bit-error-rate performance as a function of the number of resolvable paths L and the number of users K. Our numerical results suggest that the employment of LS code-based STS scheme is beneficial in a low-user-load and low-dispersion channel scenario, where a near-single-user performance can be achieved without a multiuser detector. Space charge enhanced tunneling currents in manganites
Current-voltage characteristics I(V) with a tunneling character have been observed in selected ("electroresistive") ceramic manganites R(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (R=La, Y: A=Ca, Ba). In this contribution, an I(V) model calculation based on spin-dependent transfer and a bipolar serial array of grains containing deGennes magnetic states are presented. The basic elements of the characteristic are so recovered, including its magnetic field (H) dependence, which in turn allows one to identify this array with a series of spin-dependent tunneling diodes connected in opposition. Besides, we find that the tunneling currents are only significant under space charge bending of the bands near the boundaries, that the electrochemical potential becomes H-field sensitive because of the spin-dependent electron state bandwidth b cos(q(H)/2) and that any slight randomness in the magnetic system will lead to hysteresis effects in the tunneling characteristic. Yang-Baxter maps and the discrete KP hierarchy
We present a systematic construction of the discrete KP hierarchy in terms of Sato–Wilson-type shift operators. Reductions of the equations in this hierarchy to 1+1-dimensional integrable lattice systems are considered, and the problems that arise with regard to the symmetry algebra underlying the reduced systems as well as the ultradiscretizability of these systems are discussed. A scheme for constructing ultradiscretizable reductions that give rise to Yang–Baxter maps is explained in two explicit examples
Contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Country’S H-Index
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country’s scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country’s H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill sub-indices positively contribute to higher H-index but the effect of ICT access on country’s H-index is not clear
A survey of handover algorithms in DVB-H
Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) is a standard for
broadcasting IP Datacast (IPDC) services to mobile handheld terminals.
Based on the DVB-T standard, DVB-H adds new features such as time
slicing, MPE-FEC, in-depth interleavers, mandatory cell id identifier,
optional 4K-modulation mode and the use of 5 MHz bandwidth in addition
to the usually used 6, 7, or 8 MHz raster. IPDC over DVB-H is proposed
for ETSI to complement the DVB-H standard by combining IPDC and
DVB-H in an end-to-end system. Handover in such unidirectional broadcasting
networks is a novel issue. In the last few years since the birth of
DVB-H technology, great attention has been given to the performance
analysis of DVB-H mobile terminals. Handover is one of the main research
topics for DVB-H in mobile scenarios. Better reception quality and greater
power efficiency are considered to be the main targets of handover
research for DVB-H. New algorithms for different handover stages in
DVB-H have been the subject of recent research and are currently being
studied. Further novel algorithms need to be designed to improve the
mobile reception quality. This article provides a comprehensive survey of
the handover algorithms in DVB-H. A systematic evaluation and categorization
approach is proposed based on the problems the algorithms solve
and the handover stages being focused on. Criteria are proposed and analyzed
to facilitate designing better handover algorithms for DVB-H that
have been identified from the research conducted by the author
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
