Transmitter-preprocessing-assisted cooperative downlink transmission in DS-CDMA systems experiencing propagation path loss and Nakagami-m fading

No full text
In this contribution we propose and investigate a relay diversity transmission scheme for the direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) downlink, where each (destination) mobile terminal (MT) is aided by a cluster of relays for achieving the relay diversity. In the considered system downlink multiuser interference (MUI) is suppressed with the aid of transmitter preprocessing operated at the base-station (BS). Two transmitter preprocessing schemes are considered, which are operated in the principles of transmitter zero-forcing (TZF) and transmitter minimum mean-square error (TMMSE). At the MTs, signals received from the BS and relays are combined based on the principles of maximal ratio combining (MRC) or of maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR). In this contribution the bit error rate (BER) performance of the relay-assisted DS-CDMA downlink is investigated, when the communications channels are assumed to experience both propagation pathloss and generalized Nakagami-m fading. Our study and simulation results show that the transmitter preprocessing can help to achieve the relay diversity by efficiently mitigating the MUI presenting at the relays and MTs. Furthermore, in our proposed relay diversity scheme the relays only require lowcomplexity signal processing for forwarding information to their served MTs

Migration and Labor Mobility in China

No full text
China has witnessed the largest labor migration since the reform and opening up policies were implemented. According to the most recent statistics, the total number of rural to urban migrant workers reached 136 million. Migrants are defined as persons who have left out of township for more than 6 months. The migration flow has propelled the economic and societal transition in China through labor productivity enhancement and social restructuring. Accordingly, the Chinese government has improved the migration policies with increasing migration flow and the changes of labor market situations. This report is organized as follows. Section one briefly introduces when and how the migration started by reviewing the history, size and trend, impacts of migration in China and the vulnerability of migrants. Section two reviews the main migration policy changes in the past three decades. Section three illuminates the Lewisian turning point that marks economic development and transitioning in China. Section four discusses the relevance of China’s experiences to other developing economies in terms of economic development and migration policy changes.Migration in China, Labor mobility, Impact of crisis

This report is Yi-Fang Lin Piano Recital Program Notes on April., 23, 2019. The two pieces on the program include Piano Sonata in C minor, K.457 by W.A. Mozart, and Piano Concerto No.1 in F-Sharp minor, Op.1 by S. Rachmaninoff. The note will introduce the life of two composers, the compositional background of individual work, and the analysis of the structure, including tonal design and thematic material in each work

Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply

No full text
This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.
