Exploring the relation between gender politics and representative government in the Maghreb: analytical and empirical observations
This thesis uses analytical and empirical methods to explore the relation between gender standards and democratic standards in the Maghreb, which includes Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. The analytical approach consists of considering theories that link gender standards and democratic standards, and analyzing whether and to what extent such theories would apply or not apply to the Maghreb. The empirical approach consists of taking measurements that reflect gender standards and democratic standards across the three countries and four different milestones of their recent history (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000), and applying statistical methods to compute correlations and regressions. Because the empirical approach yields no significant correlation between gender standards and democratic standards in the Maghreb, I analyze this statistical correlation for other sets of countries that are part of Maghrebian identity: Arab countries, Muslim countries, African countries, and Mediterranean countries. The combined results of these analyses give us some insight into possible explanations of the empirical observations.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 261-275)by Amel Mil
AMAL UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE FUQAHA AL-AMSAR AT THE SECOND CENTURY OF THE HIJRAH In this dissertation, ‘amal understandings of the famous and representative scholars (fuqahā al-amsār) at the second century of the Hijrah are scrutinized. The author mainly focuses on the fact that all of the big centers of the second century after the hijrah (al-Amsār) has its own understanding of ‘amal and, contrary to what is generally accepted, such an understanding is not unique to Madina. The author reviews the literature on the amal firstly, elaborates on the understandings of big centers at that time secondly, then focuses on the debates about the issue among some famous fuqahā in each center, namely Mālik b. Anas from Madina, Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Shaybānī from Kufa, and al-Awzāī from Syri
Pituitary Adenomas in Multiple Endocrine Neoplasias Type1 and Other Endocrine Neoplasias Syndromes
Multiple Endocrine Neoplasias (MEN) are very rare genetic syndromes. Pituitary adenomas (PA) are usually sporadic, but can be observed in MEN type 1 and in other genetic syndromes such as Carney’s complex syndrome, MEN type 4 (MEN4), and some hereditary pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas syndromes (HPPS).Our aim was to analyze PA’s frequency and characteristics in aforementioned syndromes observed in our department.Material and Methods: The retrospective study analyzed frequency and characteristics of PA associated to typical and atypical MENs. We excluded incomplete files and MEN2, as research for PA was not systematic, and we looked for MEN2 in PA too. The patients did not undergo genetic testing. Results: Among ten hereditary syndromes (six MEN1 and four atypical MENs: either NEM4 or HPPS), we observed eight PA =80%. Four PA were associated with MEN1 and four with non-classical MENs. PA revealed MENs in four cases. PA median height was 19.88mm (7-50). Six/eight were macro tumors (≥1cm in height), with cavernous sinus invasion in two. PA types were prolactinomas (two), somatotroph adenomas (two), gonadotroph adenoma (one) and non-secreting tumors (three). For the follow up, only two out of six treated patients achieved remission. Conclusion: In this series, PA were frequent (80%) in MEN1 and non-classical MENs. Macro adenomas and secreting tumors were prevailing with a variable aggressiveness. These syndromes genetically determined should have systematic genetic screening to specify MENs types and for rapid diagnosis and early management of affected patients and their families

Cannabinoid encapsulating nanoparticles for atherosclerosis therapy: An in vitro study
Atherosclerosis, the chronic inflammation of the arterial wall, is one of the leading causes of death in the western societies. Which is characterized by the accumulation of inflammatory macrophages and necrotic regions in the intima. Rupture of the plaque can lead to thrombosis, a blood clot in the blood vessel, blocking the natural flow of the blood. If left untreated the entire lumen can be blocked and the results can be fatal. Progression in atherosclerosis is mainly driven by the build up of macrophages. An important phenotype on these cells are cannabinoid receptors, important in the control of inflammatory pathways. By presenting inflammatory relieving cannabinoids to these receptors, the macrophages could become less inflammatory. A localized delivery would give the additional benefit of reducing systematic side effects. High density lipoprotein based nanoparticles have shown to be great carriers for drug molecules. Additionally, high density lipoproteins are able to relieve AS up to a certain extend. In this research we analyzed physical and physio-chemical properties of different nanoparticle formulations. Specifically, the size, morphology and ζ-potential. Next we investigated the cannabinoid receptor expression on different types of macrophages, which verified that macrophages in atherosclerotic conditions have an abundance of our target receptor. Finally we performed a small in vitro study showing both empty and cannabinoid loaded nanoparticles relieved pro-inflammatory signals.Biomedical Engineering | Tissue Biomechanics and Implant

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy in subjects with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and diabetes mellitus: a real-life, case–control study
International audienceAbstract Background Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) can be associated with all types of diabetes. Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) has short and long-term benefits in subjects with EPI, but its effects on diabetes control are uncertain. We aimed to study the effects of PERT initiation on glycemic control in subjects with diabetes and EPI from any cause. Methods In this retrospective study, we compared subjects with EPI and diabetes who were prescribed PERT with subjects with diabetes who had a fecal elastase-1 concentration dosage, but did not receive PERT. The primary outcome was the effect of PERT on hypoglycemia frequency and severity. The secondary outcomes were the effects of PERT on gastro-intestinal disorders, HbA 1c and body mass index (BMI). Results 48 subjects were included in each group. Overall, PERT did not have any significant effect on hypoglycemia frequency or severity, but hypoglycemia frequency tended to decrease in subjects with chronic pancreatitis. While 19% of subjects experienced mild hyperglycemia after PERT initiation, we did not report any keto-acidosis or any other severe adverse event. Gastro-intestinal disorders improved in 80% of subjects treated with PERT, versus in 20% of control subjects ( p = 0.02). Gastro-intestinal disorders improved in 87% of subjects with recommended dosage of PERT, versus in 50% of subjects with underdosage (NS). HbA 1c and BMI evolution did not differ between the groups. Conclusions PERT initiation is safe in subjects with diabetes and EPI. It does not globally decrease hypoglycemia severity of frequency, but is associated with a decrease in gastro-intestinal disorders. Trial registration Retrospectively registered.
