Screening the Author: The Literary Biopic

    No full text
This book is the first comprehensive analysis of the contemporary representation of the author on screen. It does this through two main approaches: by looking at how biographies of well-known authors in Western culture have been adapted onto the film and television screen; and by examining the wider preoccupation with the idea of what the ‘author persona’ means in broader economic, cultural, industrial, and ideological terms. Drawing from current debates about the uses of the heritage industry and conventions of the Hollywood biopic and celebrity culture, this book re-frames the analysis of the author on screen in contemporary culture and theorises it under its own unique genre: the ‘literary biopic’. With case studies including adaptations of the biographies and cultural personas of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, and Allen Ginsberg—to name a few–this book examines how and why the author continues to be a prominent screen and cultural preoccupation

Experimental examination of epistemic uncertainty effect on shared reality among friends.

An experimental study of close-friend dyads, designed to test the role of epistemic uncertainty in strengthening a sense of shared reality. Prior research has shown that epistemic uncertainty triggers greater motivation to establish shared-reality among strangers (Kopietz et al., 2010). We assume that situations that involve epistemic uncertainty facilitate the establishment of shared-reality – i.e., to co-construct an understanding of stimuli in the world that is experienced to be unique to their relationships (Rossignac-Milon, & Higgins, 2018; Rossignac-Milon et al., 2021). The current study will examine whether discussing questions concerning aspects of epistemic uncertainty with a friend, will allow partners to strengthen their experience of SR. We further expect that this will be particularly true for individuals with tolerance to uncertainty, i.e., those who are less threatened by uncertain situations (Carelton et al., 2007). In addition, SR was found to be positively associated with responsiveness (Bar-Shachar, & Bar-Kalifa, 2021; Rossignac-Milon et al., 2021). Therefore, we expect that SR will predict prospective responsiveness – i.e., greater willingness to disclose personal experiences and higher expectations that their partners’ will show responsiveness. We will explore whether this effect will be stronger for those assigned to the uncertain condition, as such situations may be more diagnostic concerning the level of SR in the relationship. Common Sense Philosophy

Bom senso, gesunder Menschenverstand, joushiki, buonsenso , koiné ennoia, sens commun, sunde fornuft, sechel shachar, sentidiño …

MRI in soils: determination of water concent changes due to root water uptake by means of a multi-slice-multi-echo sequence (MSME)

Root water uptake by ricinus communis (castor bean) in fine sand was investigated using MRI with multiecho sampling. Before starting the experiments the plants germinated and grew for 3 weeks in a cylindrical container with a diameter of 9 cm. Immediately before the MRI experiments started, the containers were water-saturated and sealed, so water content changes were only caused by root water uptake. In continuation of a preceding work, where we applied SPRITE we tested a multi-echo multi-slice sequence (MSME). In this approach, the water content was imaged by setting TE = 6.76 ms and nE = 128 with an isotropic resolution of 3.1mm. We calculated the water content maps by biexponential fitting of the multi-slice echo train data and normalisation on reference cuvettes filled with glass beads and 1 mM NiCl2 solution. The water content determination was validated by comparing to mean gravimetric water content measurements. By coregistration with the root architecture, visualised by a 3D fast spin echo sequence (RARE), we conclude that the largest water content changes occurred in the neighbourhood of the roots and in the upper layers of the soil

Authorial Histories: The Historical Film and the Literary Biopic

This essay examines a particular type of historical film, the literary biopic. Literary biopics have become increasingly popular from the 1990s onwards and their popularity highlights a particular type of contemporary engagement with history that is mediated by the creative process of literary productions and personal life-narratives. In this essay, I argue that this specific branch of the historical film displays a contemporary postmodern historical consciousness, in which national and cultural histories are self-consciously presented to audiences through an engagement with individual life stories and fictional literary constructions, highlighting the individual and “fictional” nature of the historical film and history itself. Drawing from theories of heritage cinema, I seek to demonstrate how literary biopics display a complex engagement with and construction of history, in which the past is entered into a dialogue with the present through the figure of the well-known author. The portrayal of these authors’ lives is often an avenue to explore contemporary concerns in the films, such as post-feminism, the place of history in the contemporary, the role of love in a mass-market age, the cultural capital and legacy of the canonical author and the postmodern loss of historical consciousness, memory and authenticity. It is through the mediating figure of the author that larger debates regarding history and the historical film are investigated and ultimately, I argue that these films demonstrate how the genre of the historical film has become increasingly aligned with the authorial persona as both an individual and cultural emblem of contemporary historical consciousness

The article argues that a global consideration of the luck egalitarianism offers the foundations of both global distributive justice and a policy of open borders or free mobility. The argumentation exposes and criticizes the theory elaborated by Ayelet Shachar, according to which the lottery of birth must be neutralized by means of a Tax on the Privilege of Birthright, and it’s maintained in its place that the neutralization of the birth lottery can be make more effective and fair through other institutional mechanisms that include a tax on the enjoyment of citizens' benefits and a policy of free mobility across political bordersEl artículo argumenta que una consideración global del igualitarismo de la suerte ofrece las bases fundacionales tanto a la justicia distributiva global como a una política de fronteras abiertas o de movilidad libre.
