    Effect of sandblasting and/or priming treatment on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to CAD/CAM blocks

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two different priming agents and/or sandblasting on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to the resin composite for core build-up to CAD/CAM blocks. A CAD/CAM ceramic block (GN I CERAMIC BLOCK, GC) and a CAD/CAM resin composite block (CERASMART 270, GC), a self-adhesive resin cement (G-CEM ONE, GC) and two different primers, i.e., a multipurpose primer (MP; G-Multi Primer, GC) and a ceramic primer (CP; Ceramic Primer II, GC), were examined. Five different surface treatments with priming and/or sandblasting and no surface treatment (control) were performed on the block. Disk specimens (6&nbsp;mm in diameter and 4&nbsp;mm in thickness) made from core composites were cemented to the blocks after the surface treatments. Then, the 24-h shear bond strength of the resin cement between the block and the resin composite core was determined (n = 15). Sandblasted specimens had greater bond strength than controls for both blocks (p &lt; 0.05). Priming to both blocks significantly increased the bond strength of resin cement compared to that of controls (p &lt; 0.05). Although Weibull moduli were not significantly changed among all surface treatments for both blocks, the strengths with 5% and 95% failure probability of sandblasted and/or primed blocks were estimated to be greater than those of controls. The combination of priming and sandblasting to the CAD/CAM composite and ceramic surface was effective in increasing the bond strength of the resin cement

    Testing helicity-dependent gamma gamma -> gamma gamma scattering in the region of MeV

    Light-by-light scatterings contain rich information on photon coupling to virtual and real particle states. In the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED), photons can couple to a virtual e(+)e(-) pair. Photons may also couple to known resonance states in the context of quantum chromodyanmics and electroweak dynamics in higher energy domains and possibly couple to unknown resonance states beyond the standard model. The perturbative QED calculations manifestly predict a maximized cross section at the MeV scale; however, no example of exact real-photon-real-photon scattering has yet been observed. Hence, we propose direct measurement with the maximized cross section at the center-of-mass system energy of 1-2MeV to establish a firm footing at the MeV scale. Given current state of the art high power lasers, helicity-dependent elastic scattering may be observed at a reasonable rate, if a photon-photon collider exploiting gamma-rays generated by the inverse nonlinear Compton process with electrons delivered from laserplasma accelerators (LPA) are properly designed. We show that such verification is feasible in a table-top scale collider, which may be an unprecedented breakthrough in particle accelerators for basic physics research in contrast to energy frontier colliders. © The Author(s) 2016.     The changing interpretations of the flying geese model of economic development

    The flying geese model, a theory of industrial development in latecomer economies, was developed in the 1930s by the Japanese economist Akamatsu Kaname (1896–1974). While rarely known in western countries, it is highly prominent in Japan and seen as the main economic theory underlying Japan’s economic assistance to developing countries. Akamatsu’s original interpretation of the flying geese model differs fundamentally from theories of western origin, such as the neoclassical model and Raymond Vernon’s product cycle theory. These differences include the roles of factors and linkages in economic development, the effects of demand and supply, as well as the dynamic and dialectical character of Akamatsu’s thinking. Later reformulations of the flying geese model, pioneered by Kojima Kiyoshi, attempt to combine aspects of Akamatsu’s theory with neoclassical thinking. This can be described as the “westernization” of the flying geese model. It is this reformulated interpretation that has become popular in Japan’s political discourse, a process that might be explained by the change in Japan’s perspective from that of a developing to that of an advanced economy. The position taken by Japan in its recent controversy with the World Bank, however, shows that many basic elements of Akamatsu’s thinking are still highly influential within both Japan’s academia and its government and are therefore relevant for understanding current debates on development theory
