On the Frontier of Realities. The Case of Yaroslav Melnik

    No full text
The essay analyzes a specific case of Ukrainian writer Yaroslav Melnik whose literary career is often related to the so called new literary immigration. Melnik has lived for the last twenty five years outside of Ukraine, has published (and sometimes written) his books in different European languages and in different European countries and has yet preserved his mother tongue as the main language of his work. The essay discusses a novel, novellas, short stories, and parables written in Ukrainian with the help of which Melnik has reentered in Ukrainian literary space after a long lapse. These works characterized by existential problems, poetics of myth, parabola, and absurd, akin to European modernism (Kafka, Kamu, Hesse, and Shultz) and 20th Century Ukrainian literary modernism, determine a specific place of the author in modern Ukrainian literature. The essay scrutinizes such seminal themes for Melnik as anti-totalitarian and anti-global thrust, alienated person dispersed in the “multitude” and blindly submissive to external power and such constant metaphorical images-concepts of his fiction as “forest man,” “selfhood,” “other reality,” “close space — distant space.” Rejecting narrow interpretations of national tradition, Melnik insists, not without polemical bias, on the priority of universal human values. As the essay demonstrates, there is no contradiction between the national and the universal in Melnik’s work; instead, he seeks their synthesis. The organic inclusion of universal human values in the national literary element and vice versa the inclusion of national Ukrainian properties in the global, universal, all-human context, are seen as two sides of the same process

Alyonushka n. gen. Type species. Alyonushka filia n. sp. Etymology. Named for Alyona A. Salnikova, the elder daughter of the first author. Gender feminine. Diagnosis. With characters of the family, but entire outer colony surface minutely prickled. Gonozooid(s) in calyciform center, large, with continuous non-foraminate floor. Ooeciostome(s) very short, ooeciopore tending to resemble alveolar opening. Remarks. Three species pertaining to this new genus are recognized in the samples, all sharing an excessively and minutely prickled outer colony surface and, to the extent determinable, having one or more large gonozooids with a continuous, non-foraminate floor. Ooeciostomes are very weakly developed. Alyonushka n. gen. is thus distinguished from Calyssopora n. gen., which lacks a prickly surface and a continuous incubation-chamber floor, but has more-discrete ooeciostomes and ooeciopores.Published as part of Grischenko, Andrei V., Gordon, Dennis P. & Melnik, Viacheslav P., 2018, Bryozoa (Cyclostomata and Ctenostomata) from polymetallic nodules in the Russian exploration area, Clarion - Clipperton Fracture Zone, eastern Pacific Ocean-taxon novelty and implications of mining, pp. 1-91 in Zootaxa 4484 (1) on page 36, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4484.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/143784

Ideas in the history of economic development: the case of peripheral countries

    No full text
This book examines the relationship between economic ideas, economic policies and development institutions, analysing the cases of 11 peripheral countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It sheds light on the obstacles that have prevented the sustained economic growth of these countries and examines the origins of national and regional approaches to development. The chapters present a fascinating insight into the ideas and visions in the different locations, with the overarching categories of economic nationalism and economic liberalism and how they have influenced development outcomes.Grupo Santander-UCMDepto. de Economía Aplicada, Estructura e HistoriaFac. de Ciencias Económicas y EmpresarialesTRUEpu

The Influence of Regional Media on Readers' Perception of Politics in Melnik

Diplomová práce "Vliv regionálních médií na vnímání politiky čtenáři v Mělníku" pojednává o výzkumu přejímání mediálního framingu (zarámování) politiků, politických aktérů a významných událostí čtenáři regionálních zpravodajských periodik ve městě M ělník. K výzkumu byly využity metody framingu a focus groups. V úvodní teoretické části jsou obě metody představeny. Metoda framingu sloužila ke kvalitativní analýze obsahů p ěti tištěných médií v letech 2005 až 2007 - byly to Mělnický deník, Týdeník Mělnicko, měsíčník Mělnická radnice, týdeník Tep regionu a středočeské vydání Mladé fronty Dnes. Diploma thesis "The Influence of Regional Media on Readers' Perception of Politics in Melnik" refers on a survey of accepting media framing of politicians, politics and important issues by regional media readers in the town of Melnik. Methods of framing and focus groups were used in the survey. First the methods were introduced. The method of framing was used for qualitative content analysis of five printed media from 2005 to 2007. The media were daily Melnicky denik, weekly Tydenik Melnicko, monthly Melnicka radnice, weekly Tep regionu and regional supplement of Mlada fronta Dnes for Central Bohemia. The author of this work focused on several most important issues of the 2005 to 2007 period and he observed how respondents accept or decline the framing of these problems offered by politics, journalists and other participants of Melnik political life. To do this he organised focus groups discussions with Melnik inhabitants in the age of 26 to 75 years of age. They discussed their opinions and beliefs on local politics. This work is a subjective insight into the world of regional media effects on readers, in this case focused on political issues.Katedra mediálních studiíDepartment of Media StudiesFaculty of Social SciencesFakulta sociálních vě

PRESENT KNOWLEDGE REVIEW ON THE PROBLEM OF LEPTOSPIROSIS O. A. Melnik Odessa National Medical University, Ukraine е-mail: [email protected] Abstract The article presented contains meta-analysis of the published data on the problem of leptospirosis, mainly its epidemiology. The problems of taxonomic and genetic classifications are studied, breadth of extension in the world’s different regions analyzed, the relation between leptospirosis causative agents and its hosts is pointed, modern methods of leptospirosis diagnostics are compared. Poor knowledge about the pathology under study has been revealed. The latter is connected with leptospirosis’ neglect, lack or just few governmental initiatives on this problem decision, lack of medical and sanitary guidance. Bursts of kinetic Alfvén waves and coronal radio emission at 2-3 solar radii

    No full text
Solar radio observations at 10-30 MHz have been carried out recently using radio telescopes UTR-2 (world's largest radio telescope at decametric wavelengths near Kharkov, Ukraine) and Uran-2 (Poltava, Ukraine). High sensitivity and time resolution of these observations allowed revealing many new interesting features of the coronal radio emission (V. N. Melnik et al., AIP Conf. Proc., 1206, 2010, pp. 427-432). Results of these observations can be used for studying coronal processes and remote coronal diagnostics. Of our particular interest in the present paper are coronal radio bursts at 23-29 MHz with drift rates implying the emission sources propagating upward with velocities ∼ 108 cm/s. We discuss such radio bursts and propose a feasible generation mechanism for them. © 2015 International Union of Radio Science (URSI)

Modelling Nonlocal Processes in Semiconductor Devices with Exponential Difference Schemes - Part 1: Relaxation Time Approximations

    No full text
In this paper we deal with nonlocal quasi-hydrodynamic mathematical models describing non-equilibrium physical processes in semiconductor devices. These processes cannot be adequately described with conventional drift-diffusion models. The primary numerical difficulty arises in the energy balance equation. Details of the discretisation for the continuity equations will be described along with a transformation of the energy balance equations to give computationally convenient forms. In a companion paper [19] we construct effective exponential difference schemes and apply them to modelling transport phenomena in semiconductors. Stability conditions, computational convergence and implementation of the proposed schemes are discussed with numerical examples. Key words: time relaxation, semiconductors, quasi-hydrodynamic models, exponential difference schemes.
