Vessel charter rate estimation for offshore wind O&M activities
Estimating the cost of vessels is an important factor for the operation & maintenance (O&M) costs of offshore wind farms. Accurate cost estimation is required during operation of the wind farm. This paper presents the development of the O&M charter rate modelling for offshore wind turbine jack-up vessels under different op-erational strategies. The main objectives of this modelling are to explore the differentiation of charter rates as-sociated with the charter periods and with the capabilities of different vessels; as well as to allow offshore wind farm operators to plan their maintenance strategies through considering the share of vessels’ costs in the overall maintenance costs. In this respect, various jack-up vessels in the offshore wind industry are investigat-ed and the most effective charter periods are identified. The seasonal effects on the charter rates are also con-sidered to provide critical insight into the selection of the optimum charter rate scenario
Enabling Body-Centric Computing Applications with LED-to-Camera Communication
Advances in Visible Light Communication are enabling novel Internet of Things applications. Going forward, we expect that LED-to-Camera links will enable a wide range of body-centric computing applications. Up until now, most LED-to-Camera studies have been following a deploy-and-test approach instead of a principled methodology. This ad-hoc design raises up two problems. First, we cannot compare fairly the various methods proposed in the literature because they use different types of LEDs and cameras. Second, and perhaps more importantly, we cannot identify the fundamental opportunities and limits of these novel links. To overcome these challenges, we propose a simple analytical model that estimates the range and data rate of LED-to-camera links prior to deployment. The model is built from first principles and requires only a limited set of parameters. To validate the accuracy of our model, we consider the two main transmission modes used in the literature: binary transmission and communication based on the rolling shutter effect. Our experimental evaluation confirms the predictions of the analytical model. Embedded System

The Rationality of Resectional Surgery and Palliative Interventions in the Management of Patients with Gallbladder Cancer
The aim of the present study was to evaluate in a retrospective manner, the survival period and survival rate according to stages and groups after R0, R1, R2 resections and palliative interventions. Between 2003 and 2012, 67 patients diagnosed with gallbladder carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed. Patient demographics, the survival period, and survival rate according to stages and groups after R0, R1, R2 resections and palliative interventions were retrospectively analyzed. Sixty-seven patients were diagnosed with gallbladder carcinoma. Thirty-eight patients (56.7%) were female and 29 patients (43.3%) were male. The median survival period was significantly longer in stage II and III diseases than in stage IV disease (P < 0.001). The R0, R1, and R2 resection rates in patients who underwent surgery with curative intent were 67.7, 19.4, and 12.9 per cent, respectively. The R0 resection rate according to the tumor stages was 100 per cent for stage I, 87.5 per cent for stage II, 66.7 per cent for stage III, and 42.8 per cent for stage IV disease. The median follow-up period was six months (eight days to 36 months). During this follow-up period, 53 patients (79.1%) died. In conclusion, R0 resection rate decreases when tumor stage increases. The highest survival rates after R0 resection are achieved in patients with stage I, II, and III diseases. Radical surgery has no benefit over palliative surgery for stage IV disease in terms of survival
Effective interatomic pair potentials for liquid silver-tin alloys
6th International Conference of the Balkan-Physical-Union -- AUG 22-26, 2006 -- Istanbul, TURKEYThe transferability of the local evanescent core (EC) pseudopotential to liquid AgSn binary alloys have been tested. The effective interatomic pair potentials derived from the evanescent core electron-ion potential which was constructed by Nogueira and co-workers have been calculated using the second order perturbation theory. The structural properties of liquid Ag-Sn alloys at different compositions of tin have obtained using the Variational Modified Hypernetted Chain (VMHNC) integral equation theory of liquids. The results for the partial structure factors and total structure factors near their melting have been compared with experimental data. The computed structural characteristics exhibit the correct trends with experiment. It has been shown the ability of the universal density dependent version of the EC potential to be used in the case of liquid Ag-Sn simple metals and metal alloys. The charge transferred between atoms have also been investigated.Balkan Phys Union,Turkish Phys Soc,Istanbul Univ,Yildiz Tech Univ,Bogaz Univ,Dogus Univ,European Phys Soc,Govt Istanbul,Istanbul Metropolitan Municipal,Turkish Atomic Energy Author,Sci & Technol Res Council Turkey,United Natl Educ Sci & Cultutal Org,NEL Electroni
Successful treatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumanii ventriculitis with intravenous and intraventricular colistin
Management of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB) meningitis/ventriculitis is a difficult therapeutic problem owing to the limited penetration of antibiotics into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A 2-month-old girl with ventriculitis caused by MDRAB is reported. Despite therapy with intravenous (IV) colistin ventricular fluid, cultures remained positive for MDRAB. Institution of combination therapy with IV and intraventricular colistin resulted in a successful clinical and microbiological outcome. Intraventricular/intrathecal and IV colistin might be the best therapeutic option in the treatment of central nervous system infection caused by MDRAB. Further studies are required to evaluate pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters of combined IV and intraventricular/intrathecal colistin administration, especially in children
Ertapenem for the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in children
Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a problem frequently encountered by paediatric healthcare providers. Recent data suggest that extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria are an emerging cause of UTIs in non-hospitalized patients. We report our experience of ertapenem use in 50 patients with complicated UTIs, mainly pyelonephritis, caused by ESBL-producing organisms. Methods: Fifty patients aged < 16 y who had a complicated UTI caused by ESBL-producing organisms and who were treated with ertapenem at our hospital from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009, were included in the study. Results: There were 20 (40%) males and 30 (60%) females with a mean +/- standard deviation age of 38.6 +/- 36.9 months (range 6-156 months). Twenty-eight patients had no urological abnormality. In 40 patients ertapenem was initiated after results of microbiological cultures became available. Ertapenem was initiated empirically for 10 patients known to be colonized with ESBL-producing bacteria. Urine cultures were negative at 3.3 +/- 0.7 days (range 2-5 days) after starting ertapenem treatment. The mean duration of ertapenem treatment was 7.8 +/- 1.2 days (range 7-14 days). No laboratory or clinical side effects were observed. Conclusions: Ertapenem is promising for the culture-guided treatment of ESBL-producing Gram-negative complicated UTIs. Well-designed prospective studies are needed to define the role of ertapenem in treating complicated paediatric UTIs, especially upper UTIs
