The Activities of the Shanren 山人 in the Wanli Era of the Ming
The serious social problem posed by the literati known as shanren 山人 who sold their services in the Wanli era of the late Ming had already come to the attention of many their contemporaries, and a number of studies regarding them have previously been conducted. Nevertheless, a good deal of the details of the specific activities of the shanren remains obscure. This study seeks to clarify the picture of the activities of the shanren of the period by using the "Shanren" 山人 section in the twenty-third fascicle of the Wanli yehuobian 萬暦野獲編 -of Shen Defu 沈德符 and also by carefully examining the description of the shanren in the "Shenzong shilu" "神宗實錄" portion of the Ming shilu 明實錄. Behind the ostensible prosperity of the Wanli era, contradictions in the military and economic situation in outlying regions deepened, while at the center incidents of anonymous letters exposing misconduct, which grew out of the confrontation of the emperor and his courtiers over the crown prince, frequently occurred and factional fighting intensified. These domestic problems and foreign troubles brought an end to the Ming dynasty, and the activities of the shanren in dealing with the economic problems of the outlying regions, which were at the core of both domestic and foreign problems, and their profound involvement with both factions involved the letter incidents at the center can be gleaned from a reading of the "Shenzong shilu." Furthermore, it can be presumed that the shanren were involved in the nexus of the domestic and foreign problems. The first note of the shanren appeared in Ming shilu record for the year Wanli 12. This is not to suggest that the shanren had not existed previously, but that their activities only became a serious political and social issue after the Wanli era. In this sense, it can be said that the activities of the shanren were a special phenomenon of the Wanli era. Heretofore, most evaluations of the shanren have been negative, but, in order to grasp the society and the politics of the age, it is necessary to analyze the activities of the shanren objectively. To this end, it is indispensable that the historical materials left by the shanren themselves be examined, and such is the object of a forthcoming study by this author

A textual research of the writing of miscellaneous notes in Wanli reign of Ming dynasty = Ming Wanli bi ji cheng shu kao lun
Up till now, the study of miscellaneous notes has largely focused on the
content of the texts. Nonetheless the research on their sources, writing modes,
and the note-recording process is quite inadequate. This thesis applies research
methods in communication studies and stylistics to the study of miscellaneous
notes in Wanli reign of Ming Dynasty, attempting an ontological research on
the information collection and writing process of miscellaneous notes.
The first part of the thesis explores the information sources of
miscellaneous notes, using miscellaneous notes of recorded conversation as an
example. On the basis of a solid survey of the conversationalists in the
miscellaneous notes of this period, this thesis carried out a meticulous
investigation into the lives of the key conversationalists. This part of my study
reveals that the conversationalists mainly consist of scholars, officials and
common literati. The conversationalists collected their sources from their
official experiences as well as local or family legends, and endowed their
stories with strong local characteristics. Recorded conversations include private talks within family, conversations between hosts and guests and talks in literary
circles. The diverse backgrounds of conversationalists and the different
occasions where the talks took place impact significantly on the contents, the
formats and the styles of miscellaneous notes.
The second part discusses several important issues in note-recording by
analogy and induction. The first topic concerns the motives of note-recording.
The discourse context of Wanli reign induces three major motives. The first
one, taking Confucian ideals as its lead, aspires to improve human society
through passing on wise words and noble deeds. The second one uses
miscellaneous notes instrumentally for collecting and compiling knowledge,
usually in the form of scattered and unordered items. The last one, influenced
by the literati trend of displaying distinguished talent and superior taste in the
late Ming, records proverbs and anecdotes in pursuit of a refined literary
pleasure, Moreover, the author selects the materials by evaluating their
authenticity, rarity, and relevance to the authorial concerns. Their most striking
features, as being unarranged and in disorder, are determined by such factors as
the authors’ different age levels, as well as the various materials with which
they wrote and preserved their works.
The third part delineates the process of revision and polish of
miscellaneous notes by conducting a case study on Er tan, a work widely
circulated during Wanli reign. This part carefully examines the life of the
author Wang Tonggui and goes on to explore the writing and editing process of
this work. A thorough comparison of the texts of different versions discloses
many modifications by the author as the work expanded from fifteen volumes
to fifty-four volumes. The changes include the increasing of the numbers of
tales and anecdotes under certain themes, the amplification or modification of
the original comments, as well as a re-categorization of items. All these
changes have facilitated Er Tan to develop from a work resembling oral
literature into a book with written texts expected to be read.published_or_final_versionChineseDoctoralDoctor of Philosoph
Psychometric properties of the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) in Native American children and adolescents
The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) is a commonly used instrument that evaluates anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the SCARED on a Native American child and adolescent population. A total of 236 children aged 8 to 18 participated in the study. Results suggest the SCARED total score has excellent internal consistency, and subscales demonstrated moderate to good internal consistency. The five factor and hierarchical models fit the data, and AIC and BIC results indicated the hierarchical model best fit the data. Gender differences indicated girls reported higher levels of anxiety symptoms compared to boys, and convergent validity was established between the SCARED and Spence Children's Anxiety Scale. Findings suggest the SCARED is a valid tool to use when identifying Native American children and adolescences at-risk for developing anxiety disorders
Collation and Discussion of Guizhou Chorography(Wanli Zhi)——A Case Study of Tongren Fu
The publication of the version of collation of Guizhou Chorography( Wanli Zhi) is one of the most important achievements in the field of the collation of Chinese ancient books in Guizhou academic circle, but there are many mistakes in it.Based on a case study of Ton,the author of this article holds that mistakes of the version of collation mainly lies in the use of wrong words, adding words, missing words, double characters and traditional characters, which have not been corrected. Besides,in the original version, punctuation and other forms also have mistakes.2013年贵州省教育厅人文社科规划项目“万历《铜仁府志》与明代黔东历史研究”(13GH030
