Global aeolian dust variations and trends: a revisit of dust event and visibility observations from surface weather stations

    No full text
Dr. Xin Xi at Michigan Tech is leading an effort to create a homogenized weather station-based dust-climate dataset (duISD) in support of wind erosion monitoring, dust source mapping, and dust-climate analysis at local to global scales. Current version (v1) of duISD consists of CSV files documenting the monthly dust event frequency and inverse visibility derived from the SYNOP report data of the NOAA Integrated Surface Database (ISD). The temporal coverage varies by station, with some going back to the 1950s. Refer to the README file for details. duISD v1 is associated with a research paper, titled "Global aeolian dust variations and trends: a revisit of dust event and visibility observations from surface weather stations", currently under review at Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (https://acp.copernicus.org/preprints/acp-2020-813/). Please use appropriate citation when using this dataset, and contact Dr. Xin Xi, ([email protected], https://ixnix.github.io/abci/ ) if you have questions

Traces and shards of self-injury: Strange accounting with “Author X”

    No full text
In this strange account autoethnography, three or four authors explore their lived experiences with self-injury. Strange accounting is both a post-modern style of text, and a method for keeping identities concealed when risks and secrets are in play. Author X, a post-modern place-keeper for an anonymous author who may or may not have contributed to this manuscript, introduces a new dimension and layer of concealment. With Author X in-play and under erasure, the reader will never be sure if there were three or four authors on this manuscript. Through strange accounting, a post-structuralist/postmodernist frame will be applied to understanding the self-injury experience. We frame self-injury as a social practice and, for some, an everyday norm, while remaining acutely aware of the stigma surrounding the topic of self-injury. Each of us, coupled with Author X, provide the others cover to trace stories of self-injury through the literature, our flesh, and our lives

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    No full text
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

A RMSM-X (Revised Minimum Standard Model) for Chile

    No full text
The RMSM-X model for Chile is one of a sequence of models that also includes, in increasing order of complexity, the RMSM-XX and MACOR models. The three models share the same budget accounts for an economy disaggregated into several sectors - such as private, public, financial, and foreign - and organized in a flow of funds framework. The RMSM-X model combines a simple behavioral structure with the basic accounting framework and can be solved recursively to obtain macroeconomically consistent projections for a set of endogenous variables. RMSM-XX will more completely specify the links among economic variables and will require a simultaneous solution procedure. MACOR will be a standard medium size macroeconomietric model that will introduce a more sophisticated behavioral structure into the basic accounting framework. The author also describes two possible solution procedures or closure rules for the model. They are the"normative"closure and the"positive"closure.Settlement of Investment Disputes,Financial Intermediation,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies
