Arielism of J.E. Rodó
The subject of this study is the Uruguayan essay Ariel of José Enrique Rodó and the wave of reactions and interpretations caused by this essay from 1900 on, the year of its publication, through the entire twentieth century. The first part of the thesis focuses on the circumstances of the time when Rodó wrote his famous essay. The character of the end of nineteenth century was determined by the war between Spain and the USA in 1898, and by an increasingly aggressive approach on the part of the USA as a result of a their growing military capabilities. In Latin American countries, voices were heard who warned about the danger of expansive politics of the northern neighbour. Rodó's Ariel was one of these voices. The Uruguayan author criticized the so called nordomanía and advocated continuing the Latin traditions of their Spanish ancestors. The work deals also with the main influences of two important philosophical movements, positivism and modernism, on the society
This article introduces the author of Ariel, Rodó, as a member of the Uruguayan literary community, as well as one of the figures of expressionism, and as a thinker who belongs to the generation of the founders. It starts off from the Ariel-Calíban conflict as a Latin American symbol and from the postulation of Ariel as an antiilllpenallst discourse to pose the question about the function of education in the formation of the young Latin American as a social subject that bears the true sense of the national project. The study finally arrives at a meeting with the figures that derive themselves from the Prosperos, the Callbans and the Ariels conceived as the pluralism of the perspectives in which the lives of the subjects are Iived in the spaces from which the nations stand up in arder to take a look at one another.Fil: Alvarado, Mariana
This article analyzes the epistolary work of the Uruguayan writer José Enrique Rodó (1871-1917), preserved in the Archivo José Enrique Rodó, at the Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay (BNU). We situated our analysis at the time of gestation of the work Motivos de Proteo (1909), between the years 1901 to 1908. Through the experiences revealed in the correspondences, the author left marks and impressions on his interlocutors, giving great emphasis to the epistolary genre in his creative process. We emphasize how the content of the letters can be read as an exposition of a dynamic genre, which is concretized from the interaction and liaison between writer and reader recipient, therefore, Rodó contributed to the consolidation of an unprecedented way for the Hispanic-American literature, which transits between the essay, the advice literature, and the psychological literature.
Cultural Politics, Rhetoric, and the Essay: A Comparison of Emerson and Rodó
In her article, Cultural Politics, Rhetoric, and the Essay: A Comparison of Emerson and Rodó, Sophia McClennen compares two essays which have been central to debates over American cultural identity. Her work is a detailed comparison of the persuasive language used in The American Scholar by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ariel by José Enrique Rodó. She focuses on the specific ways that the rhetoric of the persuasive essay binds Emerson and Rodó to a literary tradition and consequently impedes each author\u27s ability to construct a liberated culture. She also demonstrates how the comparative method is a useful tool for analyzing representations of cultural autonomy. For in both essays the author is intent on resisting cultural colonization from a dominant power; yet the tools employed in such resistance ultimately resort to thoughts derived from others. The similar literary and intellectual framework of these essays suggests that a correlative historical moment -- nation-building -- and political motivation -- the quest for an autonomous cultural identity -- can lead two authors from different places and different periods to produce very similar types of rhetoric or persuasive discourse. The conflict between these essays\u27 cultural politics and their use of rhetoric explains one of the fundamental pitfalls of these texts: On the one hand, each essay wants to convince the reader to think freely yet, on the other hand, clearly articulates and dictates the guidelines for such behavior
Rodó-Montalvo, paradigmas intelectuales del siglo XIX (Legados)
In the centenary of the death of Uruguayan writer José Enrique Rodó, the author recalls the relationship he had with the Ecuadorian writer and polemicist Juan Montalvo. He presents them both as the most outstanding writers of the 19th century in their respective countries, as paradigmatic examples of the intellectual committed to his time. He delves into the thinking of these authors who have unique validity in our days. A demystifying and exalting essay, in turn, of the life and work of these brilliant Latin American authors who died far from their countries, in poverty and oblivion.
The end of social confinement and COVID-19 re-emergence risk
The lack of effective pharmaceutical interventions for SARS-CoV-2 raises the possibility of COVID-19 recurrence. We explore different post-confinement scenarios by using a stochastic modified SEIR (susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered) model that accounts for the spread of infection during the latent period and also incorporates time-decaying effects due to potential loss of acquired immunity, people's increasing awareness of social distancing and the use of non-pharmaceutical interventions. Our results suggest that lockdowns should remain in place for at least 60 days to prevent epidemic growth, as well as a potentially larger second wave of SARS-CoV-2 cases occurring within months. The best-case scenario should also gradually incorporate workers in a daily proportion at most 50% higher than during the confinement period. We show that decaying immunity and particularly awareness and behaviour have 99% significant effects on both the current wave of infection and on preventing COVID-19 re-emergence. Social distancing and individual non-pharmaceutical interventions could potentially remove the need for lockdowns.Funding: the support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the “Centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa 2019 2023” Program (CEX2018 000806 S), and support from the Generalitat de Catalunya through the CERCA Program.
The following paper seeks to reflect around the tension between what included and what’s excluded from de idea of the Latin American in Ariel of José Enrique Rodó, taking as the main axis the references to the antiquity and it’s relation with the present of the author: the modernity, or it’s seek. There are, mainly, two ways in which this takes materiality, first there’s an highly valuable antiquity for his present, it’s humanistic and its legacy and importance are, to his present, still fundamental and inspiring; and there´s another antiquity that’s shown as feeble, almost dead; away from the harmony and the ideal; and that many times is presented as the example of the negative conducts and practices, this are the “oriental” cultures. In this way, the following writing looks to reflect on why this standings, as well as trying to figure out the relevance that de ancient has to the modern.
Exploring the role of climate variability and change in the spillover of zoonotic diseases: towards the development of Early Warning Systems (RWS)
The primary goal of this PhD is to deepen our understanding and improve the modeling capacity of zoonotic spillover, the multilevel process by which pathogens manage to overcome a series of natural barriers and infect other species. In particular, a key focus of this study is to unravel the influence of various external environmental and climatic extrinsic factors on this complex ecological process. These include land-use changes, deforestation/vegetation health, and especially climate trends, variability, and extremes. Considering the inherent challenges in forecasting long-term atmospheric conditions, this study delves into the potential of coupled atmosphere-ocean phenomena. Recognized for their enhanced predictive capabilities, these phenomena are analyzed as essential climate covariates, in order to be able to increase the foresight, accuracy, and efficiency of early warning systems targeting zoonotic diseases. Concurrently, the thesis also investigates the role of climate in influencing microbial biodiversity, a portion of which contributes to pathogenic biodiversity.
The text presents and discusses the letters from the Peruvian writer Teresa González de Fanning sent to the Uruguayan writer José Enrique Rodó. Our proposal is to reopen the archives to reveal an important facet of the author’s epistolary: the presence of women reflecting on the national and continental destiny. We conclude that the missives fulfill the role of bringing us closer to the theme of intellectual sociability of an author who accessed writing as a form of cultural and political expression.Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp/Marília)Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp/Marília
