Funktionalität, Repräsentation und Planungseffizienz. Die Spannungsfelder eines architektonischen Planungsprozesses am Beispiel des Neubaus der WU
Architektur gibt nicht nur einen Rahmen für soziales Leben vor, sie lässt sich auch als Ergebnis spezifischer gesellschaftlicher Verhältnisse verstehen. So hat am Planungsprozess für den Neubau der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (WU) eine Vielzahl von AkteurInnen mit unterschiedlichen Interessen teilgenommen, von denen nun einige beim Bau des Campus berück-sichtigt werden, andere nicht.
Unsere Analyse des Planungsprozesses zeigt, dass sich die erwartbaren Interessenskonflikte zwischen den zentralen AkteurInnen WU (als Nutzerin), Bundesimmobilien-Gesellschaft (BIG, als Bauherrin) und ArchitektInnen durch die Gründung einer gemeinsamen Projektgesellschaft von WU und BIG in die WU hinein verschoben haben.
Die klassische "NutzerInnenperspektive" wird nun primär von jenen WU-Angehörigen vertreten, die nicht in die Entscheidungsfindung eingebunden sind, während die Positionen der WU-EntscheidungsträgerInnen eher der "BauträgerInnenperspektive" entsprechen. Damit wurde aus dem erwarteten "architektonischen Rollenkonflikt" entlang der vier Dimensionen Funktionalität, Repräsentation, Kosten und technische / rechtliche Vorgaben großteils eine Frage der WU-internen Partizipation.
Auf Basis der Bourdieu'schen Feldtheorie wird darüber hinaus auch der Versuch unternommen, die unterschiedlichen Positionen der AkteurInnen mit ihrer jeweiligen Stellung im sozialen Feld des Planungsprozesses in Verbindung zu bringen. I Know You Are, But What Am I?: Anti-Individualism in the Development of Intellectual Humility and Wu-Wei
Virtues are acquirable, so if intellectual humility is a virtue, it’s acquirable. But there is something deeply problematic—perhaps even paradoxical—about aiming to be intellectually humble. Drawing on Edward Slingerland’s analysis of the paradoxical virtue of wu-wei in Trying Not To Try, we argue for an anti-individualistic conception of the trait, concluding that one’s intellectual humility depends upon the intellectual humility of others. Slingerland defines wu-wei as the “dynamic, effortless, and unselfconscious state of mind of a person who is optimally active and effective”. Someone who embodies wu-wei inspires implicit trust, so it is beneficial to appear wu-wei. This has led to an arms race between faking wu-wei on the one hand and detecting fakery on the other. Likewise, there are many benefits to being intellectually humble. But someone who makes conscious, strategic efforts to appear intellectually humble is ipso facto not intellectually humble. Following Slingerland’s lead, we argue that there are several strategies one might pursue to acquire genuine intellectual humility, and all of these involve commitment to shared social or epistemic values, combined with receptivity to feedback from others, who must in turn have and manifest relevant intellectual virtues. In other words, other people and shared values are partial bearers of a given individual’s intellectual humility. If this is on the right track, then acquiring intellectual humility demands epistemic anti-individualism
A multi-stage genome-wide association study of bladder cancer identifies multiple susceptibility loci.
We conducted a multi-stage, genome-wide association study of bladder cancer with a primary scan of 591,637 SNPs in 3,532 affected individuals (cases) and 5,120 controls of European descent from five studies followed by a replication strategy, which included 8,382 cases and 48,275 controls from 16 studies. In a combined analysis, we identified three new regions associated with bladder cancer on chromosomes 22q13.1, 19q12 and 2q37.1: rs1014971, (P = 8 × 10⁻¹²) maps to a non-genic region of chromosome 22q13.1, rs8102137 (P = 2 × 10⁻¹¹) on 19q12 maps to CCNE1 and rs11892031 (P = 1 × 10⁻⁷) maps to the UGT1A cluster on 2q37.1. We confirmed four previously identified genome-wide associations on chromosomes 3q28, 4p16.3, 8q24.21 and 8q24.3, validated previous candidate associations for the GSTM1 deletion (P = 4 × 10⁻¹¹) and a tag SNP for NAT2 acetylation status (P = 4 × 10⁻¹¹), and found interactions with smoking in both regions. Our findings on common variants associated with bladder cancer risk should provide new insights into the mechanisms of carcinogenesis

Born before the end of the last dynasty in China, he received a traditional Confucian education, but was also one of the first Chinese people to be sent to the West for training in modern Western science (under the Boxer Indemnity Fund). The remarkable breadth and scope of his studies included physics, mathematics, linguistics, musical and literary composition, and translation, and he was a pioneer in many of these fields
Deletion of vitamin D receptor leads to premature emphysema/COPD by increased matrix metalloproteinases and lymphoid aggregates formation
Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with accelerated decline in lung function. Vitamin D is a ligand for nuclear hormone vitamin D receptor (VDR), and upon binding it modulates various cellular functions. The level of VDR is reduced in lungs of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which led us to hypothesize that deficiency of VDR leads to significant alterations in lung phenotype that are characteristics of COPD/emphysema associated with increased inflammatory response. We found that VDR knock-out (VDR(-/-)) mice had increased influx of inflammatory cells, phospho-acetylation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) associated with increased proinflammatory mediators, and up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-12 in the lung. This was associated with emphysema and decline in lung function associated with lymphoid aggregates formation compared to WT mice. These findings suggest that deficiency of VDR in mouse lung can lead to an early onset of emphysema/COPD because of chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and lung destruction
Long-Term Risk of Upper Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage after Advanced AKI
Background and objectives There are few reports on temporary dialysis-requiring AKI as a risk factor for future upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). This study sought to explore the long-term association between dialysis-requiring AKI and UGIB. ;Design, setting, participants, & measurements This nationwide cohort study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who recovered from dialysis-requiring AM and matched controls were selected from hospitalized patients age >= 18 years between 1998 and 2006. The cumulative incidences of long-term de novo UGIB were calculated, and the risk factors of UGIB and mortality were identified using timevarying Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for subsequent CKD and ESRD after AM. ;Results A total of 4565 AM-recovery patients and the same number of matched patients without AM were analyzed. After a median follow-up time of 2.33 years (interquartile range, 0.97-4.81 years), the incidence rates of UGIB were 50 (by stringent criterion) and 69 (by lenient criterion) per 1000 patient-years in the AKI-recovery group. and 31 (by stringent criterion) and 48 (by lenient criterion) per 1000 patient-years in the non-AM group (both P<0.001). When compared with patients in the non-AM group, the multivariate hazard ratio (HR) for UGIB was 1.30 (95% confidence interval [95% CIL 1.14 to 1.48) for dialysis-requiring AM, 1.83 (95% CI, 1.53 to 2.20) for time-varying CKD, and 2.31 (95% CI, 1.92 to 2.79) for time-varying ESRD (all P<0.001). Finally, the risk for long-term mortality increased after UGIB (HR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.38) and dialysis-requiring AM (HR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.54 to 1.78). ;Conclusions Recovery from dialysis-requiring AM was associated with future UGIB and mortality

Characterization of the Microstructure and Surface Roughness Effects on Fatigue Life Using the Tanaka–Mura–Wu Model
Additive manufacturing (AM) has drawn tremendous interest in engineering applications because it offers almost unlimited possibilities of innovative structural design to save weight and optimize performance. However, fatigue properties are one of the limiting factors for structural applications of AM materials. The recently developed Tanaka–Mura–Wu (TMW) model is modified to include the microstructure and surface roughness factors, in addition to the material’s elastic modulus, surface energy and Burgers vector, to predict the fatigue curves as functions of stress or plastic strain for several typical AM materials as well as their conventional (wrought) counterpart. Furthermore, with statistical characterization of the microstructural effect, the model can be established to evaluate fatigue design allowables
