The Persistence of the R.A. Fisher-Sewall Wright Controversy
No full textThis paper considers recent heated debates led by Jerry A. Coyne and Michael J. Wade on issues stemming from the 1929-1962 R. A. Fisher-Sewall Wright controversy in population genetics. William B. Provine once remarked that the Fisher-Wright controversy is central, fundamental, and very influential. Indeed, it is also persistent. The argumentative structure of the recent (1997-2000) debates is analyzed with the aim of eliminating a logical conflict in them, viz., that the two “sides” in the debates have different aims and that, as such, they are talking past each other. Given a philosophical analysis of the argumentative structure of the debates, suggestions supportive of Wade’s work on the debate are made that are aimed, modestly, at putting the persistent Fisher-Wright controversy on the course to resolution

Soils of western Wright Valley, Antarctica
No full textWestern Wright Valley, from Wright Upper Glacier to the western end of the Dais, can be divided into three broad geomorphic regions: the elevated Labyrinth, the narrow Dais which is connected to the Labyrinth, and the North and South forks which are bifurcated by the Dais. Soil associations of Typic Haplorthels/Haploturbels with ice-cemented permafrost at 70 cm. They are developed in situ in strongly weathered drift with very low surface boulder frequency and occur on the upper erosion surface of the Labyrinth and on the Dais. Typic Anhyorthels also occur at lower elevation on sinuous and patchy Wright Upper III drift within the forks. Salic Aquorthels exist only in the South Fork marginal to Don Juan Pond, whereas Salic Haplorthels occur in low areas of both South and North forks where any water table is> 50 cm. Most soils within the study area have an alkaline pH dominated by Na+ and Cl- ions. The low salt accumulation within Haplorthels/Haploturbels may be due to limited depth of soil development and possibly leaching
Simultaneous metrizability of coarse spaces

Given a topology and a coarse structure we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a metric giving rise to both of these. development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be
further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations
on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country
A cohomological characterisation of Yu's Property A for metric spaces
No full textWe introduce the notion of an asymptotically invariant mean as a coarse averaging operator for a metric space and show that the existence of such an operator is equivalent to Yu’s property A. As an application we obtain a positive answer to Higson’s question concerning the existence of a cohomological characterisation of property A. Specifically we provide coarse analogues of group cohomology and bounded cohomology (controlled cohomology and asymptotically invariant cohomology, respectively) for a metric space X, and provide a cohomological characterisation of property A which generalises the results of Johnson and Ringrose describing amenability in terms of bounded cohomology. These results amplify Guentner’s observation that property A should be viewed as coarse amenability for a metric space. We further provide a generalisation of Guentner’s result that box spaces of a finitely generated group have property A if and only if the group is amenable. This is used to derive Nowak’s theorem that the union of finite cubes of all dimensions does not have property A
Nonlinear pulse propagation in the vicinity of a two-photon resonance
No full textWe develop a formalism for studying pulse propagation in the vicinity of a two-photon resonance, in the spectral region where the effects of two-photon absorption are not overwhelming. The formalism predicts self-steepening and asymmetric spectral broadening in the transmitted pulse, as previously observed in experiments and numerical simulations involving atomic vapors and semiconductors
