    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Markante Strukturbrüche in der Energiebranche begleitet von technologischen Entwicklungssprüngen haben zu einem deutlich erhöhten Tempo bei der Umgestaltung von Energiemärkten geführt. Insbesondere die Deutsche Energiewende liefert eine sehr gute Illustration dafür, wie ein nationaler Stromerzeugungspark sein Erscheinungsbild auf einer ungewöhnlich kurzen Zeitskala komplett verändern kann. Innerhalb nur weniger Jahre hat sich die Landschaft der Energieerzeugung in Deutschland dramatisch gewandelt. Diese Entwicklung wird flankiert vom Kernenergieausstieg sowie einer nachhaltigen Verschiebung von der zentralen und thermischen Stromerzeugung hin zur dezentralen und verteilten Erzeugung aus erneuerbaren Energieträgern. In solch einem sprunghaften Marktumfeld stellt sich im Zusammenhang mit der Planungssicherheit für Investoren die Frage nach zuverlässigen Werkzeugen zur Bewertung von spezifischen Investitionsprojekten unter Berücksichtigung möglicher Marktszenarien. Die Entscheidung für diese Art von Projekten (seien es Onshore- und Offshore-Windfarm-Projekte, größere Photovoltaik-Farmen, Pools von verteilten Mikroerzeugungseinheiten, Stromspeicherportfolios etc.) hängt maßgeblich von den zu erwartenden Deckungsbeiträgen für die nächsten zehn bis zwanzig Jahre ab. Hier stellt sich die Frage, welche Art von Modellansätzen einen deutlichen Beitrag in der Modellentwicklung für Strompreise leisten können. Die sehr umfangreiche Modellklasse der sogenannten Strukturmodelle, auch als Hybridmodelle bezeichnet, stellt ein mächtiges mathematisches Handwerkszeug zur Beschreibung der Besonderheiten von Strommärkten dar. Das zentrale Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung von erweiterten Strukturmodellen für Strommärkte, für die eine analytische Formulierung mit geschlossenen Lösungen möglich ist und mit dem Zweck der Szenarioanalyse und der Anlagenbewertung. Wir schlagen in dieser Arbeit neue erweiterte Strukturmodelle vor und leiten geschlossene Ausdrücke für Strompreis-Erwartungswerte und Prämien von Strompreis-Optionen her. Die entwickelten Modelle weisen folgende Charakteristika auf: (1) Einbeziehung einer beliebigen Zahl N von Technologieklassen (insbesondere N>2) innerhalb der Merit-Order. (2) Produktionskapazitäten und marginale Grenzkosten werden als Zufallsvariablen behandelt. (3) Einführung einer Engpassfunktion (Scarcity Function) zur Berücksichtigung von Abweichungen des Strompreises vom marginalen Grenzkostenniveau. (4) Einbettung zweier Modellformulierungen für jede einzelne Modellvariante: Die arithmetische Formulierung und die geometrische Formulierung für die stochastischen Prozesse der marginalen Grenzkosten. (5) Implementierung von zwei Merit-Order-Varianten: Eine Modellarchitektur beschreibt die Merit-Order als Stufenfunktion. Die andere Architektur modelliert die Merit-Order als stückweise lineare oder als stückweise exponentielle Funktion (auch als Bid-Stack-Model bezeichnet). (6) Entwicklung einer expliziten Formel für den Strompreis als Funktion von stochastischen Treibern wie etwa Residualnachfrage, Produktionskapazitäten sowie marginalen Grenzkosten. (7) Erweiterung der Strukturmodelle in Richtung nicht-normalverteilter und nicht-lognormalverteilter marginaler Grenzkosten. (8) Erweiterung hinsichtlich nicht-normalverteilter Residualnachfrage. Alle obenstehenden Charakteristika sind in einem geschlossenen analytischen Modell abgebildet, d. h. wir geben geschlossene Lösungen für Strompreisderivate an. Nach unserem Kenntnisstand sind die hier entwickelten Strukturmodelle die ersten analytischen Hybridmodelle mit geschlossenen Lösungen unter Einbeziehung aller oben genannten Charakteristika.Significant structural shifts in the energy sector accompanied by distinct technology innovations have led to an accelerated pace of transformation in electricity markets. The German energy transition is an excellent illustration of how far an electricity generation stack may change its face within a short timescale never seen before. In just a few years, Germany's energy landscape has mutated dramatically, flanked by a nuclear energy phase-out and a clear shift from centralised and thermal generation units towards renewable energy and distributed production capacities. In such a volatile market setting, with the need for planning security, the investor asks for a set of sound tools to assess specific investment projects against the background of a universe of significant market scenarios. The decision as for such kind of projects (be it onshore or offshore wind farms, larger solar parks, pools of distributed micro generation facilities, electricity storage clouds, etc. ), sensitively depends on the project's contribution margins that can be expected for the next ten to twenty years. The question arising in this context is which model approach for the electricity price process may yield significant inputs for the required model development. The rich class of structural models - also referred to as hybrid models - are powerful candidates for finance mathematical formulations to describe the idiosyncrasies of electricity markets appropriately. The main objective of this thesis is the development of structural models for the electricity market, that provide an analytically tractable framework for scenario analysis and asset valuation. For this purpose, we developed new and extended structural models and derived closed form expressions for expectation values as well as for the value of plain vanilla options written on the electricity spot price. The characteristics of these new structural models are: (1) Inclusion of an arbitrary number N of technology classes (especially N>2) in the merit order. (2) Consideration of production plant capacities and marginal generation costs as random variables. (3) Introduction of a scarcity function to include electricity price deviations from the marginal generation cost level. (4) Embedment of two formulations into each model variant: The arithmetic and the geometric formulation for the marginal cost processes. (5) Implementation of two merit order architectures: One architecture models the merit order as a step function. Another architecture models the merit order as a piecewise linear or a piecewise exponential function (referred to as bid stack model). (6) Development of an explicit formula for the electricity price as function of stochastic drivers like residual demand, production capacities and marginal generation costs. (7) Extension of the structural model to marginal cost processes with non-normal and non-lognormal distributions. (8) Extension to residual demand processes with non-normal distributions. All of the above model characteristics are included in an analytical model, i.e. we present closed form solutions for electricity derivatives. To the best of our knowledge, the structural models developed in this thesis are the first analytical hybrid models with closed form solutions including all the above characteristics
