Current status of the asthma and allergy database
The database provides an online resource for access to data on the genetics of asthma and allergy. This report describes the present status of the site. Current-ly, a detailed description of 88 linkage studies (7164 linkage positions) and 72 mutation studies are avail-able. The results can be accessed in table form or graphically. The database also contains mouse asthma studies and human homology relationships, gene expression studies and links to relevant patents. Association between Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist gene and asthma-related traits in a German adult population
A recent study in German and Italian families associated variants in the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RA) gene with asthma. The aim of the present study was to further investigate the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL1RA gene in the development of atopy and lifelong asthma in a population-based study. METHODS: DNA samples from the German centres of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey were analysed for genetic variants in the IL1RA gene and the development of asthma, atopy and bronchial hyperreactivity. RESULTS: Carriers of the rare G allele of SNP rs447713 had a significantly increased risk of developing asthma (P = 0.0013) and allergic sensitization (P = 0.0119). Carriers of the rare C allele of SNP rs3087271 had an increased risk of asthma (P = 0.0227) and high immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels (P = 0.0232). A haplotype built from eight SNPs in the IL1RA gene (A-C-A-G-A-C-G-A) was associated with a higher prevalence of asthma (P = 0.007) and high total IgE (P = 0.02). Bronchial hyperreactivity was positively associated with the haplotype A-C-G-G-A-C-G-C (P = 0.02) and negatively with the A-C-G-G-A-C-T-C (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: A previously described association between IL1RA and asthma in families could be reproduced in a population-based sample. The genetic variants of IL1RA gene do not to seem to affect asthma alone, but to act as modulators of asthma-related traits as well, where different haplotypes drive the development of different phenotypes

Effect of Radiation and Magnetohydrodynamic Free Convection Boundary Layer Flow on a Solid Sphere with Convective Boundary Conditions
In this paper, the effect of radiation on magnetohydrodynamic free convection boundary layer flow on a solid sphere with convective boundary conditions, in which the heat is supplied through a bounding surface of finite thickness and finite heat capacity, is considered. The basic equations of the boundary layer are transformed into a non-dimensional form and reduced to nonlinear systems of partial differential equations and solved numerically using an implicit finite difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical solutions are obtained for the wall temperature, the heat transfer coefficient, local Nusselt number and the local skin friction coefficient, as well as the velocity and temperature profiles. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for various values of the Prandtl number Pr, magnetic parameter M, radiation parameter NR, the conjugate parameter g, and the coordinate running along the surface of the sphere, x are analyzed and discussed.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Thermo-Diffusion and Chemical Reaction Effects on MHD Three Dimensional Free Convective Couette Flow
In this paper, the effects of thermo-diffusion and chemical reaction on a 3 dimensional free convection couette flow of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and heat absorption, are analyzed. The plates involved are vertical. The magnetic field is applied in a direction normal to the plates. The plate at rest is subjected to a transverse sinusoidal injection velocity distribution, while the plate in uniform motion is subjected to constant suction and slip boundary conditions. The equations governing the fluid flow are solved using simple perturbation technique. The expressions for skin friction, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number are also derived. Dimensionless velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are displayed graphically for different values of the parameters entering into the problem, like Pr, Re, M, Gr, Gm, h, A, Sc, So and Kr. The variations in skin friction, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number for different physical parameters are presented.

Risk factors of new-onset asthma in adults : a population-based international cohort study

Allergy 2010; 65: 1021-1030 Abstract Background: The occurrence of new-onset asthma during adulthood is common, but there is insufficient understanding of its determinants including the role of atopy. Objective: To assess the risk factors for the development of new-onset asthma in middle-aged adults and to compare them according to atopy. Methods: A longitudinal analysis of 9175 young adults who participated in two surveys of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) conducted 9 years apart. Findings: We observed 179 cases of new-onset asthma among 4588 participants who were free of asthma and reported at the beginning of the follow-up that they had never had asthma (4.5 per 1000 person-years). In a logistic regression, the following risk factors were found to increase the risk of new-onset asthma: female gender (OR: 1.97; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.38,2.81), bronchial hyperresponsiveness (3.25; 2.19,4.83), atopy (1.55;1.08,2.21), FEV(1) > 100 % predicted (1.87;1.34,2.62), nasal allergy (1.98;1.39,2.84) and maternal asthma (1.91;1.13;3.21). Obesity, respiratory infections in early life and high-risk occupations increased the risk of new-onset asthma although we had limited power to confirm their role. Among the atopics, total IgE and sensitization to cat were independently related to the risk of new-onset asthma. The proportion of new-onset asthma attributable to atopy varied from 12% to 21%. Conclusion: Adults reporting that they had never had asthma were at a substantial risk of new-onset asthma as a result of multiple independent risk factors including lung function.
