ARCHON: Theory and Practice
This paper describes the state of the ARCHON project at its halfway stage. It outlines why a Distributed AI approach is appropriate for large industrial applications, the benefits which accrue and highlights those domain characteristics which have had significant bearing on the design process. The ARCHON functional architecture is described and a clear mapping with the design forces is made. The problem of constructing a general architecture which is sufficiently powerful for real-size applications is raised and two mechanisms used within ARCHON for achieving this objective are identified. The first mechanism is to combine generic, declarative knowledge related to cooperation and control with situated action formalisms which are tailored to the particular application. The second approach is to provide general structures which can be instantiated with domain specific information
Phospha-Wittig Reagents Rediscovered
Phospha-Wittig reagents, RPPMe3 (R = Mes* 2,4,6-tBu3-C6H2;
MesTer 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)-C6H3;
DipTer 2,6-(2,6-iPr2C6H3)-C6H3),
can be considered as phosphine-stabilized phosphinidenes. In this study we show
that PMe3 can be displaced by NHCs or NHOs. Interestingly,
phosphinidene-like reactivity results in a subsequent C(sp2)-H
activation of the exocyclic CH2 in NHOs. This concept was further
extended to allyl-apended NHOs, which results in phosphine-substituted allyl
species
Preparação de sais de fosfônio alílicos multifuncionalizados e sua aplicação na síntese de (E)-2-metilalcenoatos, ácidos (E)-2-metilalcenóicos e dienos substituídos como precursores de carbo- e heterociclos
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Físicas e Matemáticas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Química, Florianópolis, 2011Este trabalho apresenta a síntese de sais de fosfônio com alto grau de pureza e em excelentes rendimentos a partir do tratamento de brometos alílicos com trifenilfosfina em acetonitrila à temperatura ambiente. Subsequentemente, estes sais foram submetidos à reação de redução pelo emprego de NaHCO3 aquoso sob irradiação por micro-ondas, com formação de (E)-2-metil-2-alcenoatos de metila. Do mesmo modo, os sais de fosfônio foram submetidos à reação de redução e hidrólise básica, pela utilização de NaOH ou LiOH) em meio aquoso para fornecer os respectivos ácidos (E)-2-metil-2-alcenóicos. Neste último, a formação competitiva do subproduto regioisomérico foi contornada pelo tratamento da mistura isomérica com sais de Pd(II) ou sob condição one pot a partir do sal de fosfônio. Ambas as condições foram conduzidas sob irradiação por micro-ondas e levaram à formação do ácido desejado com excelente regiosseletividade (>99%) e em rendimentos de bons a elevados (71-92%). Os sais de fosfônio também foram utilizados na preparação de dienos substituídos pela reação de Wittig com aldeídos aromáticos na presença de NaHCO3 aquoso à temperatura ambiente. Foram obtidos dienos com geometria E,E com boa seletividade e isolados em rendimentos variados (22-87%). A aplicação destes dienos na síntese de compostos carbo- e heterocíclicos não foi bem sucedida sob as condições reacionais estudadas

Wittig olefination “baking powder”: a hexameric halogen-bonded phosphonium salt cage for encapsulation and mechanochemical transformation of small-molecule carbonyl compounds
We report a hexameric supramolecular cage assembled from the components of a Wittig-type phosphonium salt, held together by charge-assisted R-Br· · ·Br-· · ·Br-R halogen bonds. The cage reliably encapsulates small polar molecules, including aldehydes and ketones, to provide host-guest systems in which components are pre-formulated in a near-ideal stoichiometry for a base-activated Wittig olefination in the solid-state. These pre-formulated solids enable a molecular-level “baking powder” approach for solvent-free Wittig reactions, based on a design of solid-state reactivity in which the host for molecular inclusion also acts as a complementary reagent for the chemical transformation of an array of guests. These host-guest solid-state complexes can also act as supramolecular surrogates to their Wittig olefination vinylbromide products, in a Sonogashira-type coupling that enables one-pot mechanochemical conversion of an aldehyde to an enediyne
The ARCHON System and its Applications
ARCHON™ (ARchitecture for Cooperative Heterogeneous ON-line systems) was Europe’s largest project in the area of Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI). It devised a general-purpose architecture, software framework, and methodology which has been used to support the development of DAI systems in a number of real world industrial domains. Some examples of the applications to which it has been successfully applied include: electricity distribution and supply, electricity transmission and distribution, control of a cement kiln complex, control of a particle accelerator, and control of a robotics application. The type of cooperating community that it supports has a decentralised control regime and individual problem solving agents which are large grain, loosely coupled, and semi-autonomous. This paper will tackle a broad range of issues related to the application of ARCHON technology to industrial applications. Firstly, it gives the rationale for a DAI approach to industrial applications and highlights the characteristics which typify this important domain. Secondly, the ARCHON framework is detailed - with a special emphasis being placed upon the implementation architecture. Thirdly, a brief resumee and status report of the main applications is presented. Finally, the lessons learned and the future plans are presented
