The (Post-)Communist Orient: History, Self-Orientalization and Subversion by Michał Witkowski and Vladimir Sorokin

Summary This article analyses two literary texts: Barbara Radziwiłłówna z Jaworzna-Szczakowej by the Polish author Michał Witkowski (2007) and Sakharnyi Kreml’ by the Russian author Vladimir Sorokin (2008) in the context of postcolonial studies. I treat the terms coined by post-colonial critique, such as orientalism, orientalization, subversion or mimicry as not only ideological categories, but also as aesthetic and narrative ones. These tools turn out to be useful in the interpretation of both these texts which, despite the differences between them, may be read as examples of post-dependence narration, which articulate issues in connection with identity-related problems of modern Polish and Russian cultures. Both Witkowski and Sorokin subversively employ auto- and heterostereotypes and avail themselves of the strategy of self-orientalization, which enables the play on foreign notions regarding, respectively, Polish and Russian culture and collective identity. The novel by Michał Witkowski ironically, perversely addresses national complexes associated with the systemic transformation of 1989 and takes the floor in the discussion on post-communism. In turn, Sakharnyi Kreml’ by Vladimir Sorokin is an example of a futuristic dystopia, in which criticism of Putin’s Russia commingles with reflections on the non-autonomous and non-independent status of own culture which, in the year 2028, continues to reproduce foreign discourses and finds it difficult to articulate its own position.</jats:p

Translating nicknames : The case of Lubiewo by Michał WitkowskI

Get PDF
Based on theatricality, humour and camp aesthetics, the novel Lubiewo (2005) by the Polish writer Michał Witkowski recounts the tragicomic lives and adventures of Polish queers under Communism. One of the main features of the novel is the meaning-bearing nicknames of the characters, which result from the camp practice of “queer renaming”. This relies on transforming or substituting male proper names with ironic and witty female nicknames. The paper analyses the German, French, English and Czech translations of the novel to explain the strategies used to render such “talking nouns” in new linguistic-cultural contexts

Distributed Approximations of f-Matchings and b-Matchings in Graphs of Sub-Logarithmic Expansion

We give a distributed algorithm which given ε > 0 finds a (1-ε)-factor approximation of a maximum f-matching in graphs G = (V,E) of sub-logarithmic expansion. Using a similar approach we also give a distributed approximation of a maximum b-matching in the same class of graphs provided the function b: V → ℤ^+ is L-Lipschitz for some constant L. Both algorithms run in O(log^* n) rounds in the LOCAL model, which is optimal

The paper reports from the author’s perspective the debate on the book by M.P. Markowski Polityka wrażliwości. Wprowadzenie do humanistyki (Kraków: Universitas, 2013). This debate was organized within the Framework of the Conrad Festival in Cracow in 2013, and the participants were the following professors: Michał Paweł Markowski as the author of the book himself, Ryszard Nycz as the moderator of discussion, Agata Bielik-Robson, Krzysztof Kłosiński and Lech Witkowski, together with Grzegorz Jankowicz represen ing the journal „Tygodnik Powszechny”. The key question for the debate was linked with the issue whether and in what a way one can defend the value of humanities in their contrast with the scientific rigour on one side, and the neoliberal afirmation of equivalence of banality on the other.

Działalność artystyczna i pozaartystyczna Witkowskiego stanowi przykład interesującego trybutu literackiego i rodzaj niedoczytania (misreading).Elfriede Jelinek is a well-known author in Poland, she is an icon for many polish male and female writers, who read and interpretate her books in their own ways, with many refractions. This paper is a case study about how Michał Witkowski a young polish writer (1975) reads her books and uses her image in his literary works, interviews and new media. Especially in his novel Zbrodniarz i dziewczyna [A criminal and a girl] he is interested in a symbol/icon Elfriede Jelinek, not really in her writings. His work is an interesting literary tribute and an example of misreading.

"The fur is empty. C'est fini" : "Barbara Radziwiłłówna from Jaworzno-Szczakowa" by Michał Witkowski as the literature of the "end of literature"

No full text
The text attempts to read Barbara Radziwiłłówna z Jaworzna-Szczakowej by Michał Witkowski in the context of the post-modern conviction on the exhaustion of creative capabilities of literature. To this effect, it references both theories contributing to the paradigm of postmodernism, including Francis Lyotard’s “collapse of grand narratives”, and concepts directly referencing the literary output, such as “the literature of exhaustion”, “banalism” or “spoiled literature”. The article examines how these decadent tendencies have affected the construction of individual segments of the novel; beginning from sentences, through plot and the protagonist, to the message of the work. A key aspect seems to be (in accordance with John Barth’s postulate) an attempt to “feed” on what is considered to be “burnt-out”. Witkowski deliberately emphasizes elements considered to be the most worn out. He carries ultimate forms to the extreme. By creating their negatives (e.g. a negative of plot, sentence, message), the author manages to get - at least partially - outside the thematized exhaustion. Doprowadza krańcowe formy do ostateczności.

Lubiewo (2005) by Michał Witkowski presents a particularly high number of cultural elements related to the last decades of the Polish People’s Republic (1952–1989), which far from serving exclusively as a historical background, turn the latter into one of the novel’s main characters. The present paper aims at investigating and comparing the way these elements, whose translation is known to be problematic, have been transferred into the Russian (Любиево 2007) and English (Lovetown 2010) translations.

Court notes in Michał Römer’s journals (Royal-Polish Peace Court in Kolno 1917—1918)

No full text
From 2017 onwards “Karta” centre has been publishing a six-volume series of Michał Römer’s Dzienniki, journals, covering the period from the end of the partitions of Poland to the years of World War II. The third volume, published in 2018, covers the years 1916—1919 and contains notes on the work of Römer in the Polish judiciary from 1917, i.e. the establishment of royal-Polish courts. The article presents Römer as a justice of the peace in Kolno from September 1917 to November 1918. It presents in the introduction a short biographical outline of the author, then characterises the royal-Polish judiciary in the area of the Governorate-General of Warsaw and the judiciary in the Łomża district. Römer’s comments and judgments pass through the whole deliberations, and — especially in the third part of the text — his significant and profound reflections on both the judicial work in Kolno and the profession of judge have been exposed. Römer treated his duties as a mission and carried them out with integrity and good service to the local community. His general comments on the duties of judges are still valid and testify to his insight into the essence of the profession
