Distributed Approximations of f-Matchings and b-Matchings in Graphs of Sub-Logarithmic Expansion
No full textWe give a distributed algorithm which given ε > 0 finds a (1-ε)-factor approximation of a maximum f-matching in graphs G = (V,E) of sub-logarithmic expansion. Using a similar approach we also give a distributed approximation of a maximum b-matching in the same class of graphs provided the function b: V → ℤ^+ is L-Lipschitz for some constant L. Both algorithms run in O(log^* n) rounds in the LOCAL model, which is optimal

No full textThe article presents the person of Marcin son of Paweł of Gołocice, descendant of the minor gentry of Łęczyca. The author describes his career as notary (notary imperiali auctoritate, notary of the Gniezno consistory and chapter, surrogate of the Gniezno official and official of Pomerania) and beneficiary (parson of Borkowo, Sompolno and Staw, vicar of the Gniezno cathedral, Pomeranian archdeacon in the Włocławek chapter). On the one hand, emphasis is placed on Marcin’s personal talents which enabled him to perform various offices and functions in the service of the Gniezno college of vicars, cathedral and chapter (watchmaker, succentor of the cathedral choir, prefect of the construction of the cathedral). On the other hand, attention is drawn to the patronage of Władysław Oporowski, a Gniezno canon and bishop of Włocławek (1434-1449), thanks to whom Marcin of Gołocice, as one of three out of 106 vicars of the Gniezno cathedral, in the first half of the 15th century obtained prelature of the cathedral chapter and was nominated Pomeranian archdeacon in the Włocławek chapter. A contribution to personal ethnography The article – written in a form of a layered account – is an ethnographic document describing a particular existential situation of struggling with loss experienced by Marcin Kafar. Two liminal instants are taken into consideration, namely dying of the beloved Grandmother (suffering from cancer) and a sudden death of author’s Father. The author treats those unexceptional moments of his biography as a kind of The Life Trial that needs to be worked out in various psycho-spiritual dimensions. By bringing back a set of memories of care giving to his confi ned to bed Grandmother, Marcin Kafar shows a particular process of coming to enlightenment on what has a real value in his life and what has not. A literary device of speaking directly to the author’s Grandmother is used on this level of the text to feed and strengthen emotional bond that did not cease to exist in the time of physical death but is still continuing after it. While Grondmother’s dying was able to be „tamed”, Father’s unexpected death caused in the author total emotional shock, challenging his previous seemed-to-be-sacred moral base and putting a question mark on his faith. Another layer of the article includes some confessions made by well known artists and humanists e.g. Arthur P. Bochner, Józef Szajna and Paul Auster, all telling their own stories of losing the closest family members. Sharing stories of living through grief can, in Marcin Kafar’s opinion, heal ourselves as well as others, giving a human being a ground for understanding what is usually hard to conceive

Continuous-discrete smoothing of diffusions
No full textSuppose X is a multivariate diffusion process that is observed discretely in time. At each observation time, a transformation of the state of the process is observed with noise. The smoothing problem consists of recovering the path of the process, consistent with the observations. We derive a novel Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to sample from the exact smoothing distribution. The resulting algorithm is called the Backward Filtering Forward Guiding (BFFG) algorithm. We extend the algorithm to include parameter estimation. The proposed method relies on guided proposals introduced in Schauer et al. (2017). Properties of random coverings of graphs
No full textWydział Matematyki i InformatykiPrzedmiotem rozprawy doktorskiej są asymptotyczne własności losowych nakryć grafów zdefiniowanych przez Amita i Liniala w 2002 roku, jako nowy model grafu losowego. Dla zadanego grafu bazowego G losowe nakrycie stopnia n, oznaczane jako Ḡ, otrzymujemy poprzez zastąpienie każdego wierzchołka v przez n-elementowy zbiór Ḡ_v oraz wybór, dla każdej krawędzi e={x,y} \in E(G), z jednostajnym prawdopodobieństwem, losowego skojarzenia pomiędzy zbiorami Ḡ_x i Ḡ_y. Pierwszym zagadnieniem poruszanym w pracy jest oszacowanie wielkości największej topologicznej kliki zawartej (jako podgraf) w losowym nakryciu danego grafu G. Udało się pokazać, że asymptotycznie prawie na pewno losowe nakrycie grafu G zawiera największą z możliwych topologiczną klikę. Drugim badanym zagadnieniem jest pytanie o istnienie w podniesieniu grafu cyklu Hamiltona. W pracy pokazujemy, że jeżeli graf G zawiera dwa krawędziowo rozłączne cykle Hamiltona, których suma nie jest grafem dwudzielnym i ma minimalny stopień co najmniej 5, to asymptotycznie prawie na pewno nakrycie Ḡ jest grafem hamiltonowskim.In the thesis we study selected properties of random coverings of graphs introduced by Amit and Linial in 2002. A random n-covering of a graph G, denoted by Ḡ, is obtained by replacing each vertex v of G by an n-element set Ḡ_v and then choosing, independently for every edge e = {x,y}\in E(G), uniformly at random a perfect matching between Ḡ_x and Ḡ_y. The first problem we consider is the typical size of the largest topological clique in random covering of given graph G. We show that asymptotically almost surely a random n-covering of a graph G contains the largest possible topological clique. The second property we examine is the existence of a Hamilton cycle in Ḡ. We show that if G contains two edge disjoint Hamilton cycles, which sum is not a bipartite graph and has minimum degree at least 5, then asymptotically almost surely Ḡ is Hamiltonian

Głównym założeniem pracy było uzyskanie dokładniejszych informacji o efektach stereoelektronowych, dynamicznych oraz konformacyjnych, występujących w tokoferolach, głównie w pierścieniu dihydropiranylowym. W ramach prowadzonych badań zsyntezowane zostały trzy serie analogów witaminy E do badań spektroskopowych oraz strukturalnych w aspekcie ich aktywności biologicznej, głównie antyoksydacyjnej. W grupie związków modelowych znalazły się analogi α-tokoferolu, modyfikowane w pozycji O-1 oraz C-2. Zsyntezowane zostały nieopisane dotychczas w literaturze 1-karbaanalogi witaminy E zawierające szkielet 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaftalenu (tetraliny) w miejsce pierścienia chromanu. W drugim wariancie otrzymana została seria analogów α-tokoferolu, zawierających w miejsce długiego łańcucha fitylowego krótszy fragment węglowy (C-1, C-2, C-6) oraz szereg grup funkcyjnych. Trzecią grupę stanowiły nowe analogi 2-desmetylo. Otrzymane związki modelowe zostały zbadane za pomocą spektroskopii NMR (w roztworze oraz ciele stałym). Zbadany został wpływ atomu tlenu O1 oraz podstawników w pozycji C-2 na dynamikę i preferencje konformacyjne układu chroman-6-olu. W celu ilościowego oszacowania stabilizującego wpływu atomu O1 na tworzące się rodniki fenoksylowe przeprowadzono badania aktywności antyoksydacyjnej. Ponadto, zbadany został wpływ 1-karba-α-tokoferolu na właściwości termotropowe modelowych błon fosfolipidowych.The dissertation concerns the chemistry of vitamin E. The aim of this work was to gain more information about stereoelectronic, dynamic and conformational preferences present in tocopherols, mainly in the dihydropyran ring. For spectroscopic and structural studies, a group of α-tocopherol analogs modified at the O-1 and C-2 position was designed and synthesized. The main goal of the synthetic work was to obtain new vitamin E analogs containing the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene skeleton in place of the chroman ring. As a result of the work, a simple and efficient method of synthesis novel 6-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalenes has been developed. In the second part of the synthetic work, a series of model compounds with shorter carbon fragment (C1, C2, C6) in a place of the long phytyl chain have obtained. In the last part of the synthetic work new 2-desmethyl analogs were synthesized. The obtained model compounds were investigated using solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The influence of the O1 oxygen atom and the substituent at the C-2 position on dynamics and conformational preferences of the dihydropyran ring have been studied. No full textThe author of the article presents a book by Marcin Kącki, a journalist of "Gazeta Wyborcza", entitled Białystok. Biała siła, czarna pamięć (Białystok. White Power, Black Memory), published in 2015. In the reportage, the author tries to present the reasons why the city in Podlasie began to be presented as a xenophobic space, especially unfriendly to Jews. This is in contrast to the multicultural reality of Białystok, a city inhabited by Poles, Belarussians, Tatars, Ukrainians, and a few Jews. It is a city where Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, was born. According to Kącki, the cause of radicalization is the fact that Jews from Białystok have been wiped from the social memory.
