This paper aims to discuss the hybrid performances in the thinking of Modesto Brocos y Gomez. It Uses as source the book Journey to Mars (1930), a fictional work that transits between the utopian genre and the anecdotal mode. For that it discusses the connection of the author to utopian literary genre and its relation to satire, linking them to the discussions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on the whitening of the Brazilian people, taking also into account his paintings on this subject.382363380Brocos y Gomez, M., (1930) Viaje a Marte, , Valencia: Arte y LetrasCampanella, T., (2002) Cidade Do Sol, , http://www.dominiopublico.gov.br, Edição digital de Marcelo C. Kentucky Fighting Men: 1861-1946

    No full text
Kentuckians by the thousands have fought in all of the American wars of the industrial age. Fathers, sons, and brothers from the Bluegrass State spilled each other’s blood in countless Civil War battles and skirmishes. Over the next century their descendants bore arms on the seven seas, the Far Western frontier, in the Caribbean and Philippine islands, and in China. Kentuckians took part in both world wars of the twentieth century in every capacity. Kentucky Fighting Men, 1861–1945 features individual Kentuckians who represent the overall context of the American military experience from the Civil War through World War II. Richard G. Stone, Jr. presents accounts that illuminate the heroism, ennui, tragedy, ghastly horror, absurdity, and the infinite variety of warfare and military life. Richard G. Stone, Jr., professor of history at Western Kentucky University, is also the author of A Brittle Sword: The Kentucky Militia, 1776–1912.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_military_studies/1005/thumbnail.jp

Of the first and second row diatomic hydrides, ab initio calculations predict SH to exhibit the largest H.W. effect. Indeed, our spectra confirm a very large effect, and we present here an attempt at a quantitative analysis of the Herman-Wallis intensity perturbation in SH

Clodualdo Del Mundo, Jr.: Reflections of reality

    No full text
As a screenwriter, Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr. is distinguished for his screenplays that reflect reality through the themes that he presents. As a realist, he views reality with an objective attitude, and focuses on daily and familiar environment rather than the concerns of the more affluent sectors of the society. This thesis, with the guidance of an interview with Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr., is an analysis of the themes of his screenplays, Maynila... Sa Kuko ng Liwanag, (1970) Merika (1984) and Alyas Raha Matanda (1977). Because del Mundo uses his themes as his vehicle to convey certain social and political truths in the country the time he wrote the screenplays, his realist ideas are drawn out. And, as the author of this thesis alluded the themes of the screenplays with the circumstances of the society then, one may conclude that reality is indeed reflected in his themes

[Review of] Robert G. Lake, Jr. Chilula: People from the Ancient Redwoods

    No full text
Since information concerning the northern California Chilula has rarely appeared in print and some observers have maintained that they no longer exist as a tribe, Robert G. Lake, Jr., attempts to provide a comprehensive account of the people. He not only demonstrates that they do, indeed, exist but also that much of their traditional culture remains intact. Using relevant archaeological and ethnographic literature, as well as on-site field study of village and ceremonial locations and the collection of a number of personal interviews from elderly Chilulas, the author draws a relatively detailed picture of hunting practices, fishing techniques, gathering, food sources, medicinal herbs, animal cosmology, religion, and life cycle. The reader learns about the Chilula\u27s lack of susceptibility to poison ivy, about how animals convey good and evil power, and about healing rituals. Lake\u27s detail with respect to religion, which he asserts was functionally integrated into every fiber of the Chilula cultural system, is especially noteworthy

Characterization of Neoparamoeba pemaquidensis strains: PCR-RFLP of the internal transcribed spacer region from the amoeba and endosymbiont

    No full text
Neoparamoeba pemaquidensis continues to be an ongoing problem for commercial finfish aquaculture and has also sporadically been associated with mass mortalities of commercially relevant marine invertebrates. Despite the ubiquity and importance of this amphizoic amoeba, our understanding of the biology as it applies to host range, pathogenicity, tissue tropism, and geographic distribution is severely lacking. This may stem from the inability of current diagnostic tests based on morphology, immunology, and molecular biology to differentiate strains at the subspecies level. In the present study, we developed a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region that can accurately differentiate amoeba strains of N. pemaquidensis. The investigation focused on the complications of the amoeba ITS microheterogeneity in the development of a subspecies marker and the use of the endosymbiont, Ichthyobodo necator related organism (IRO), ITS region as an alternative marker. The combination of host amoeba and endosymbiont ITS PCR-RFLP analyses was successfully used to correctly identify and characterize an N. pemaquidensis isolate from an outbreak of amoebic gill disease in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from the west coast of North America (Washington State, USA).Charles G. Means of Implementing Negative Representation of "Others" Strategy as Markers of G. Bush Jr. and B. Obama's Conceptual Styles

    No full text
Abstract. the article deals with the speech manipulation as a means of expression of persuasiveness in discourse. Manipulation is treated as a peculiar communicative-speech strategy to influence the addressee in the political discourse, which is implemented through a set of tactics. The selection of tactics is greatly affected by the conceptual style of the author of political discourse. The article deals with the analysis of the tactics, through which the strategy of negative presentation of “others” is realized, namely, the tactics of “Super-Generality” and “Exemplification”. These tactics are treated as the markers of conceptual styles of the USA Presidents G. Bush Jr. and B. Obama. It has been proved, the speech peculiarities of persons with different conceptual styles predetermine higher frequency of some tactics and, consequently, lower frequency of other tactics. The tactics of “Exemplification” consists in transferring the features, which generally characterize some specific ethnic (or other) group onto the certain individual or the single event. This tactics may be considered to be typical for the discourse of G. Bush Jr., whose conceptual style is analytical. It is caused by such characteristics of the speech of persons with analytical style as deductiveness and the tendency to the excessive use of labels. Inductiveness of B. Obama’s speech whose conceptual style is relational, explains higher frequency of the tactics of “Super-Generality” in his discourse. The tactics of “Super-Generality” consists in generalizing some unitary model, some aspects of unitary experience to soma group scheme

Author Institution: Union Carbide Research InstituteThe infrared, visible, and near-ultraviolet spectra of TiO, ZrO, HfO, WO, WO2WO_{2} (and WO3,W2O6,W3O8,W3O9WO_{3}, W_{2}O_{6}, W_{3}O_{8}, W_{3}O_{9}) have been observed in neon and argon matrices at 44^{\circ} and 20K20^{\circ}K with 16O^{16}O and 18O^{18}O substitution. A discussion will be given of the spectra and the molecular orbitals and ground states of the diatomic and triatomic molecules. The larger tungsten oxide molecules have been observed in the infrared only; the particular trapped species varying with the conditions of vaporization. It is found that (1) the spectra confirm a 3Δ^{3}\Delta_{***} ground state for TiO,1TiO,^{1} (2) ZrO, and probably HfO, have a 1Σ+^{1}\Sigma^{+} ground state, (3) the W16OW^{16}O electronic spectra exhibit many vibrational perturbations not present in the W18OW^{18}O spectra, (4) the WO2WO_{2} spectra are like those of TaO2TaO_{2}, so that WO2WO_{2} is bent in the ground and excited states,2states,^{2} (5) each of the numerous infrared bands of the WaOmW_{a}O_{m} molecules can usually be assigned to particular species with the help of mass spectrometric data.31data.^{3} {^{1}} J.
