Wit and wisdom in classical Arabic literature: Leiden lectures on Arabic language and culture
The Leiden Lectures on Arabic Language and Culture were initiated in 2013 on the occasion of the 400-year anniversary of the founding of the chair of Arabic at Leiden University. Each year an outstanding scholar in the field is invited to present a lecture on the rich and enjoyable variety of classical Arabic texts and their significance and relevance for today’s world.
This book contains the first three lectures delivered by Petra Sijpesteijn, James E. Montgomery and Geert Jan van Gelder. From the reasons to study Arabic in the 17th century and today, to the jokes written into apparently serious scientific treatises, these three lectures together demonstrate the historical and cultural richness of the Arabic literary world

European Funds and Regional Convergence: From the European Context to the Italian Scenario
The inclusive economic growth and the territorial cohesion represent the central points of the EU agenda. The regional funds are the main European Regional Policy aimed to increase the employment levels in the Union and to reduce the territorial divides between the backward and forward regions. This work aims to verify the effectiveness of 2007-2013 EU funding by means of the Difference-in-Differences regression on official data referring to European NUTS-2 regions. The aim is twofold. First, we verify whether the regional funds narrowed employment disparities in the European context. Second, we focus on Italy as one of the largest beneficiary countries of funds. The results suggest a general ineffectiveness of funds across the European countries and an even worst scenario in Italy. The quality of institutions, the fund management by the national and regional governments and the monitoring activities are the main causes of failure of regional policies in Italy
Topological Phase Transitions in Calabi-Yau Compactifications of M-Theory
We construct five-dimensional gauged supergravity actions which describe flop and conifold transitions in M-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds. While the vector multiplet sector is determined exactly, we use the unitary Wolf spaces to model the universal hypermultiplet together with N charged hypermultiplets corresponding to winding states of M2-branes. After specifying the hypermultiplet sector the actions are uniquely determined by M-theory. As an application we consider five-dimensional Kasner cosmologies. Including the dynamics of the winding modes, we find smooth cosmological solutions which undergo flop and conifold transitions. Instead of the usual runaway behavior the scalar fields of these solutions generically stabilize in the transition region where they oscillate around the transition locus. The scalar potential thereby induces short episodes of accelerated expansion in the space-time
Directing work of Jan Mikulášek
The thesis "Jan Mikulášek and his directing" deals with one of the most outstanding contemporary Czech theater directors. The author attempts to explain the life and work of Jan Mikulášek by analyzing his directorial processes for specific productions which she has seen. Author picks up the threads of the bachelor thesis entitled "Cooperation between director and stage designer: J. Mikulášek and M. Cpin", where she analyzed Mikulášek directorial processes especially on the production of Heda Gablerová. The list od Mikulášek productions is rich so the author chose for her analysis a particular section of his work which she, among other things, compares with his previous works. She deals with Europeana, Nenápadný půvab buržoazie, Šedá sedmdesátá aneb Husákovo ticho productions in detail and especially with the Hodní chlapci production in which the author participated as a dramatic adviser
Directing work of Jan Mikulášek
Diplomová práce "Režijní tvorba Jana Mikuláška" se zabývá jedním z nejvýraznějších současných českých divadelních režisérů. Autorka se snaží přiblížit osobnost a tvorbu Jana Mikuláška prostřednictvím analyzování jeho režijních postupů u konkrétních inscenací, které měla možnost vidět. Navazuje na svou bakalářskou práci nazvanou "Spolupráce režie a scénografie: J. Mikuláška a M. Cpina", kde analyzovala Mikuláškovy režijní postupy především v inscenaci Heda Gablerová. The thesis "Jan Mikulášek and his directing" deals with one of the most outstanding contemporary Czech theater directors.
