Wiryono, Kristiansen P, Bruyn LLD, Saprinurdin, Nurliana S. 2023. Ecosystem services provided by agroforestry home gardens in Bengkulu, Indonesia: Smallholder utilization, biodiversity conservation, and carbon storage. Biodiversitas 24: 2657-2665. Agroforestry system provides ecosystem services such as conserving biodiversity and providing smallholder farmers with food and other daily needs. It can also generate income for the owners. This study was conducted in 105 home gardens of four villages in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, to analyze tree species diversity and composition, uses, and potential carbon storage in the agroforestry system of home gardens. Tree data were collected on individual trees from 200 plots (10×10 m). Home garden owners were interviewed on the uses of each tree species. The species richness of trees in each village ranged from 18 to 36, with a total of 57 species (29 introduced and 28 native) for four villages. Most trees (30 species) provided food. The above-ground carbon storage of trees ranged from 29 Mg ha-1 to 127 Mg ha-1, with an average of 87 Mg ha-1. This study found that the agroforestry system in home gardens serves some ecosystem services, i.e., providing food, medicines, and other daily needs, conserving plant species and the habitat they provide, and storing carbon. These ecosystem services help villagers build resilience to changing environmental and socio-economic conditions

Speculative settlements: built form/tenure ambiguity in kampung development

© 2010 Dr. Wiryono RaharjoOver one billion people in the world today live in slums. This UN estimation suggests that slums continue to be part of the global production of the built environment, regardless of the countless efforts to eradicate them. Slums, squatters’ settlements, and informal settlements are words frequently used interchangeably to describe a ‘non-state’ approach to settlements development, which characterises the contemporary urban Third World. The urban kampung (informal settlement) of Indonesia exemplify such phenomenon. This thesis investigates kampung development with particular reference to kampung in the city of Yogyakarta. An underlying premise of this thesis is that, in terms of the tenure acquisition process, informal settlement development is the reverse of traditional (formal) development. In formal development, secure tenure precedes the building construction, through the granting of authorised property title by the state. By contrast, in informal development, building construction comes first and tenure negotiation follows. A primary proposition of the thesis is that tenure acquisition in this mode of development is a speculative endeavour, through which the buildings (built forms) function as mediators of tenure negotiation. The thesis argues that the continuity and change of built forms can signify tenure security/insecurity of kampung dwellers. To satisfy this claim, the research employs a case study approach with two case studies selected: kampung Sidomulyo/Kricak and kampung Tungkak. Kampung Sidomulyo/Kricak emerged as a result of private land subdivision by the landlords, who saw the demolition of a homeless barrack and eviction of its dwellers as a prospect for property speculation. These landlords speculated by leasing their lands to renters who built their own houses, using temporary building structures. The result in such parts of the kampung was not squatter housing but insecure tenure in rented slums. The need for a higher sense of permanence later drove these renters to invade the government-controlled lands along the riverbanks. Such invasions not only expanded the territories of this kampung, but also provided some renters with access to finance to acquire of the authorised rented lands, in order to gain a greater tenure security. In this case the squatters’ settlement has enabled higher quality housing and greater tenure security than the rented slums. Similarly, the development of kampung Tungkak began with coercive displacement of the homeless housing tenants, through the abandonment of such a facility by the government. However, since these buildings were not demolished, they provided an opportunity for the existing tenants to remain or to move out, and for outsiders to reterritorialize the vacant abandoned buildings (as well as to claim the vacant lands around them). Moreover, tenure conditions in Tungkak are highly ambiguous as the land largely belongs to the Sultan of Yogyakarta; the abandoned buildings belong to the local government, and the construction within and around them mostly belong to the residents. The research finds such ambiguity provides prospects for the continuity of property speculation and the attainment of de facto tenure. Analyses of both case studies were conducted primarily by means of morphological mapping and interview. The dimension of analysis includes history, tenure conditions, morphology, utilities and services, everyday life, and current changes and upgrading. It is argued that secure tenure in kampung development is gained through a range of tactics, many of which involve built form at the scale of both the house and the neighbourhood (Rukun Tetangga - RT). The house can be seen as a built form that functions as the starter of tenure acquisition, where the materiality of the house functions as a signifier of permanence. At a collective level, public buildings, pavements, and gates work to legitimate and stabilize the settlement as a whole. The latter could signify the greater confidence of dwellers in dealing with the threat of tenure insecurity. The research also argues that kampung development tends to be community-driven. Within this pattern, the state involvement tends to be subordinate. The quest for secure tenure involves a range of complex speculative activities that utilise informal tactics as they seek the formalities of permanent tenure

BIODIVERSTY CONSERVATION IN INDONESIA REQUIRES RELIGIOUS FOUNDATION

    No full text
Indonesia is a megabiodiversity country. But the loss of habitat and exploitation have threatened our biodiversity. So far many projects have failed to protect the biodiversity in Indonesia. To be auccessful, conservation works in Indonesia must deal with the environmental ethic. Religion is one source of ethic. Since most Indonesians are Moslems it is imperative that Islamic scholars and preachers include environmental ethic in their speech. It is encouraging to find out that Islam does support conservation of nature, including biodiversity. If conservation of biological diversity has been understood by the general public as a religious duty, it will be much easier for conservation workers to do their jobs

The Commuting Mode Choice of Students of Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia

This research explored the commuting mode preferences of students living near Institut Teknologi Bandung when a new mode of transportation (i.e., carpool) is introduced to the selection list. Six alternative modes were presented: minibus, car, motorcycle, car-based ride-sourcing, motorcycle-based ride-sourcing, and carpool. The data collection process was conducted using a questionnaire-based stated-preferences survey. It included eight sets of labeled scenarios with a number of attributes: travel time, travel cost, waiting time, transfer amount, access and egress time, frequency, congestion time, baggage cost, and parking cost. A total of 1416 observations were acquired for further analysis. A mixed logit (MXL) model with random cost parameter and random error components was used. From the MXL results, we found that travel cost had no significant influence on the selection of commuting mode among students. This result was unforeseen given the characteristics of Indonesian consumers, who are notoriously sensitive to price. However, based on the results for several significant attributes of carpool as well as from the value of travel time savings and demand calculation, we suggest that carpooling is a valid alternative transport mode for campus commuting. As a pioneer study on student commuting mode selection, this study provided valid and dependable evidence on how students around ITB main campus choose their transportation methods. Keywords. angkutan bersama, mahasiswa  ITB, mixed logit, elastisitas, nilai waktu

Teaching Co-Design to Promote Students’ Community Engagement

The current landscape of architectural education has been predominantly based on studio teaching the mode of teaching that can be traced back in the age of French L’Ecole des Beaux Arts. It was during the Beaux Arts era that studio teaching and jury system first deve-loped, and it continues today. The approach is characterized by the use of atelier (studio) for coaching, where juniors learn from seniors and competition among students are the norm. The approach also presumes that architects are the provider of design services who think that they are more competent than their clients in solving the design problem; which is a paradox to the fact that most parts of the built environment anywhere in the world are the creation of ordinary people. In other words, ordinary people can contribute significantly to the decision making within the architectural design process. They can actually be treated as a partner of architects in designing their building, which is what Co-Design all about. This paper aims to describe the introduction of Co-Design approach in architectural design studio teaching at Universitas Islam Indonesia. The research questions this paper intends to respond: to what extent could Co-Design be adopted in architectural design teaching? What lessons have the students learned from their experience in involving people in the urban design process? The case study methods employed in this research, through which author looks at the Co- Design teaching delivery in the Architectural Design Studio 7 in the past three years. While overall result of the study shows that time limitation has constrained the students’ community engagement, most cases examined reveal that introduction of Co-Design approach has paved the way for students to understand how ordinary people contribute to the shaping of the urban built environment
