The National Poetry Library houses the Arts Council poetry collection, the most comprehensive and accessible collection of modern poetry in Britain. Its home in the Southbank Centre forms an international art centre and home to one of England’s most celebrated cultural institutions. An exhibition that focused on building bridges between the visual arts and contemporary poetry was instigated by the National Poetry Library. Elements included typographic installations in the space itself, the presentation of research from a short residency in the form of a new artwork, and the exhibition of a previous re-search outcome called ‘a full folded dictionary’. The new work categorised Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet into three emotional states – passion, neutral and rage, and placed them in large text blocks. From this, a series of collages were also made by cutting each letter out and arranging them as abstracts. The work asks questions about what resonances printed language can carry – both literally and when reduced to form. A series of talks were given at the Southbank centre in London, about the ideas the work explores, Articles appeared in publications such as Grafik and Wallpaper discussing the works

Sam Winston, who also wrote/illustrated this work presents some ideas on the project he has been working on for the last three years. Winston’s experiments came from looking at the structures of different types of literature: from storybooks to bus timetables: “The way you navigate a timetable is very different to the way you read a short story” he comments. “I wanted to take these different types of visual navigation and introduce them to each other: a timetable re-ordering all the words from beauty and the beast, or a newspaper report on Snow White.” By imposing the visual rules of one style of writing to a different system of organizing language, Winston has created a visually arresting and verbally intriguing piece.” Paula Carson, Graphic Poetry. Churchill, not “Winston”, opened its doors to the public, in what is now Wilson Middle School, in September of 1960. The first principal, Reg Turner started the school on its long and very successful path. Over the years, staff at Churchill have developed the school’s enduring qualities. The school has always prided itself on being a student centred place. It was the first school in the province to develop continuous learning, a process by which students could proceed at their own rate to get through their classes. It was the first school where students called teachers by their first name- a symbol of the close relationships that have developed over the years between staff and students. i In 1989 Churchill was awarded the honour of becoming the first International Baccalaureate School in Southern Alberta. This program has enabled Churchill to become the strong academic school that it is today. Churchill has won many academic, sports, and fine acts awards over its many years. Although, what the school is most proud of is graduating productive individuals Who will make a strong contribution to society. People who graduate from Churchill feel a strong connection to the school. There are currently ten staff members working at Churchill who graduated from the building; two of whom are former Mr. Churchill’s. Many Once you have attended Churchill you become a member of the Churchill Family, a concept that has very strong roots at Churchill,so strong in fact that the motto for the anniversary is “It’s Time to Come Home.” MM- 5-^- / as • liU/ j ■firzui ■Mt-al 8 Where do students spend most of their school days? The classroom of course! Some students enjoy Phys Ed. because of the sports, while others would rather art, because it gives them a chance to express themselves.
