XIX e do
in Tim Burton's Contemporary Gothic
The main purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how a 19th century author
influenced a contemporary cinematographic narrative. To study the influence of Edgar
Allan Poe on Tim Burton, we will use an interdisciplinary approach method that
privileges the relationship between different arts, combining Literature and Cinema. We
will also select some historical contexts and artistic-literary concepts, such as the Gothic
and the Grotesque, which influence the work of an author from the 19th century and a
contemporary film director. In order to allow a complete understanding of the works to
be studied, this kind of approach is the most adequate to associate these aestheticliterary tendencies that originated these fictional and cinematographic productions
Evaluating Citebase, an open access Web-based citation-ranked search and impact discovery service
Citebase is a new citation-ranked search and impact discovery service that measures citations of scholarly research papers which are openly accessible on the Web, i.e. papers that are assessable continuously online. Other services, such as ResearchIndex, have emerged in recent years to offer citation indexing of Web research papers. In the first detailed user evaluation of an open access Web citation indexing service, Citebase has been evaluated by nearly 200 users from different backgrounds. The paper details the procedures used in the evaluation, and analyses the results of this study, which took place between June and October 2002. It was found that within the scope of its primary components, the search interface and services available from its rich bibliographic records, Citebase can be used simply and reliably for the purpose intended, and that it compares favourably with other bibliographic services. It is shown tasks can be accomplished efficiently with Citebase regardless of the background of the user. More data need to be collected and the process refined before it is as reliable for measuring citation impact of indexed papers. Better explanations and guidance are required for first-time users. Coverage is seen as a limiting factor, even though Citebase indexes over 200,000 papers from arXiv. Non-physicists were frustrated at the lack of papers from other sciences. The principle of citation searching of open access archives has thus been demonstrated and need not be restricted to current users. Since the evaluation, Citebase has become a featured service of the ArXiv physics eprint archives
Ecocriticism and “thinking with writing”: an interview with Tim Ingold
Over the course of an influential career spanning several decades, Tim Ingold, Professor Emeritus at the University of Aberdeen, has established himself as a preeminent voice in the field of Social Anthropology. Author of studies including “The Perception of the Environment” (2000), “Being Alive” (2011) and “The Life of Lines” (2015), this interview was inspired by the potential of his wide-ranging scholarship to unearth some fascinating avenues for research in literary studies. The breadth of his writing on habitation, perception and skilled practice, suggests myriad applications for his thinking beyond the purely anthropological, and particularly for bridging the concerns of literary and environmental studies. The philosophical depth of his work, apparent in his analyses of processes of growth and formation in both biological and socio-cultural domains (indeed questioning the supposed divisions between these fields), proves that his scholarship provides a refreshing counter-narrative to many prevailing schools of thought in current literary theory, especially to much of the discourse of New Materialism and Speculative Realism. In addition, this interview contains his views regarding certain emerging issues in literary studies, such as the material practices of reading, and the ascendency of the computer screen over the printed book, areas where his anthropological perspective is both stimulating and revealing. As a renowned scholar who has recently surveyed the changes in the academy and in disciplinary relationships throughout his long career, his observations provide valuable insights into the capability of the arts to guide us into a wider, more interconnected world. Crucially, his responses also speak to the world of academia, and how we can foster a practical awareness of ecological issues within the often-rarefied spheres of academic research and practice.
Circles and Mistakes: Interview with Tim Ingold
Tim Ingold is a British anthropologist, Social Anthropology Professor at the University of Aberdeen, Fellow of the British Academy, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has explored the relationship between anthropology, architecture, art, and design; and through his work, has invited us to ‘think through making’ and ‘learn by doing’.
Ingold is the author of Evolution and Social Life (Cambridge University Press, 1986); Lines: A Brief History (Routledge, 2007); Making: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art and Architecture (Routledge, 2010); and Anthropology: Why it Matters (Polity, 2018), among many other books. In this interview he responds to some questions about the practice of repair in his own daily life, but also the role and comprehension of repair in his intellectual work, and the possible connection between such action and the act of design

This final paper, Term paper ot undergraduate thesis aims to present a discussion about the relationship between school-based learning, formal primary education, an apprenticeship and the recognition and belonging of one’ssocial environment through the television program Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum, broadcasted by TV Cultura from1994 to 1997. In addition, the work aims to observe how a television program is able to influence language development and literacy skills, specifically. To this end, a personal chronology of the work’s author will be presented, which will serve as a basis to exemplify the literature used as a theoretical reference. The material relationship and social reading presented in the chronology will be in accordance with the authors chosen and used to endorse the arguments. During the work, the structure of the program, its characters, frames and narrative will be detailed, in order to understand the reasons that made Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum be considered an educational program. In this way, the discussion presented seeks to understand and prove the importance, relevance and television framework that was the program in question

Journal publishing and author self-archiving: Peaceful Co-Existence and Fruitful Collaboration
The UK Research Funding Councils (RCUK) have proposed that all RCUK fundees should self-archive on the web, free for all, their own final drafts of all journal articles reporting their RCUK-funded research, in order to maximise their usage and impact. ALPSP (a learned publishers' association) now seeks to delay and block the RCUK proposal, arguing that it will ruin journals. All objective evidence from the past decade and a half of self-archiving, however, shows that self-archiving can and does co-exist peacefully with journals while greatly enhancing both author/article and journal impact, to the benefit of both. Journal publishers should not be trying to delay and block self-archiving policy; they should be collaborating with the research community on ways to share its vast benefits
This article reviews the reflections about the relationship between humans and animals in the work of the British anthropologist Tim Ingold by focusing on the different uses of the concept of domestication. We analyze here the seven major works of the author that comprise four phases of his thought. Initially a tool used by Ingold to approach interspecific relationships between humans and the reindeer, domestication is reconsidered as a way of repositioning the relationship between humans and animals in terms of evolution. It is then reconsidered in the context of a critique of the industrial society, and, ultimately, it has its value as a concept dissipated by the idea of an omnipresent life.
Acceptance conditions in automated negotiation
In every negotiation with a deadline, one of the negotiating parties has to accept an offer to avoid a break off. A break off is usually an undesirable outcome for both parties, therefore it is important that a negotiator employs a proficient mechanism to decide under which conditions to accept. When designing such conditions one is faced with the acceptance dilemma: accepting the current offer may be suboptimal, as better offers may still be presented. On the other hand, accepting too late may prevent an agreement from being reached, resulting in a break off with no gain for either party. Motivated by the challenges of bilateral negotiations between automated agents and by the results and insights of the automated negotiating agents competition (ANAC), we classify and compare state-of-the-art generic acceptance conditions. We focus on decoupled acceptance conditions, i.e. conditions that do not depend on the bidding strategy that is used. We performed extensive experiments to compare the performance of acceptance conditions in combination with a broad range of bidding strategies and negotiation domains. Furthermore we propose new acceptance conditions and we demonstrate that they outperform the other conditions that we study. In particular, it is shown that they outperform the standard acceptance condition of comparing the current offer with the offer the agent is ready to send out. We also provide insight in to why some conditions work better than others and investigate correlations between the properties of the negotiation environment and the efficacy of acceptance conditions.MediamaticsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
