Golo Manns "Wallenstein" : a search for traces in Czech context

    No full text
Golo Mann isn't connected with the Bohemian-Czech history only by his biography as an German exiled author but also as an historian. In his fundamental and outstanding biography "Wallenstein" he realized a life-long fascination and occupation with this character. But this work, published in 1969, is not just a journey into the past of the Great European War with its outbreak at Bílá Hora, but with a contemporary view on country and politics of Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1960s. Golo Mann opened the bohemian landscape of the 17th century for perspectives afterwards, up to his and the countries present during the "Prague Spring". History and Contemporary History cross each other and give an image for the meaning of continuity.Golo Mann isn't connected with the Bohemian-Czech history only by his biography as an German exiled author but also as an historian. Energy conserving SUPG methods for compatible finite element schemes in numerical weather prediction

We present an energy conserving space discretisation based on a Poisson bracket that can be used to derive the dry compressible Euler as well as thermal shallow water equations. It is formulated using the compatible finite element method, and extends the incorporation of upwinding for the shallow water equations as described in Wimmer, Cotter, and Bauer (2020). While the former is restricted to DG upwinding, an energy conserving SUPG method for the (partially) continuous Galerkin thermal field space is newly introduced here. The energy conserving property is validated by coupling the Poisson bracket based spatial discretisation to an energy conserving time discretisation. Further, the discretisation is demonstrated to lead to an improved thermal field development with respect to stability when upwinding is included. An approximately energy conserving scheme that includes upwinding for all prognostic fields with a smaller computational cost is also presented. In a falling bubble test case used for the Euler equations, the latter scheme is shown to resolve small scale features at coarser resolutions than a corresponding scheme derived directly from the equations without the Poisson bracket framework

Energy conserving compatible finite element methods for numerical weather prediction

The compatible finite element method has recently gained an increased interest in numerical weather prediction, as it allows for higher order discretisations and more general meshes, thus avoiding the parallel computing issues associated with grid poles. Further, it can be seen as a finite element extension of the Arakawa finite difference C grid. A dynamical core based on it is currently in development at the UK Met Office, due to replace the current finite difference latitude longitude grid discretisation. In this thesis, we focus on compatible finite element discretisations that are energy conserving, which is an important property in particular for climate simulations. This is achieved using a Hamiltonian framework, where energy conservation is expressed via the antisymmetry of a Poisson bracket that underlies the governing equations. In order to achieve an improved field development, we newly incorporate into the Poisson bracket Discontinuous Galerkin upwind and Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin stabilisation methods for the thermal, density related, and vorticity field equations. The energy conserving property is validated by coupling the upwind-stabilised spatial discretisations to an energy conserving time discretisation. Further, the discretisations are demonstrated to lead to an improved field development with respect to stability for the 2D and 3D dry compressible Euler, rotating shallow water, and thermal rotating shallow water equations.Open Acces

Peut-on se baigner deux fois dans le même fleuve ? À propos de l’auto-traduction de Doomi Golo par Boubacar Boris Diop

    No full text
This article raises the issue of the literary self-translation from an African language, Wolof, into a European language, French. The case of the Senegalese novelist Boubacar Boris Diop, who translated himself his first novel written in Wolof, Doomi Golo, into French, is a telling example. Indeed, a quick comparative reading of this novel and its translation, Les Petits de la guenon, reveals that this shift from the original language to the target language entails radical changes in the text. Using translation studies and genetic criticism, this article attempts to determine whether these shifts are due to the untranslatability of Wolof culturemes into French, or if they are simply a manifestation of the free choice of the author, resulting from an intentional strategy on his part to adapt to the universe of the target culture

A compatible finite element discretisation for the nonhydrostatic vertical slice equations

We present a compatible finite element discretisation for the vertical slice compressible Euler equations, at next-to-lowest order (i.e., the pressure space is bilinear discontinuous functions). The equations are numerically integrated in time using a fully implicit timestepping scheme which is solved using monolithic GMRES preconditioned by a linesmoother. The linesmoother only involves local operations and is thus suitable for domain decomposition in parallel. It allows for arbitrarily large timesteps but with iteration counts scaling linearly with Courant number in the limit of large Courant number. This solver approach is implemented using Firedrake, and the additive Schwarz preconditioner framework of PETSc. We demonstrate the robustness of the scheme using a standard set of testcases that may be compared with other approaches.Comment: Response to reviewers. Thanks to Golo Wimmer for pointing out the wrong factor of h in the interior penalty for diffusion - this was also wrong in the codes and we reran the dense bubble testcase

Improving the accuracy of discretisations of the vector transport equation on the lowest-order quadrilateral Raviart-Thomas finite elements

    No full text
Within finite element models of fluids, vector-valued fields such as velocity or momentum variables are commonly discretised using the Raviart-Thomas elements. However, when using the lowest-order quadrilateral Raviart-Thomas elements, standard finite element discretisations of the vector transport equation typically have a low order of spatial accuracy. This paper describes two schemes that improve the accuracy of transporting such vector-valued fields on two-dimensional curved manifolds. The first scheme that is presented reconstructs the transported field in a higher-order function space, where the transport equation is then solved. The second scheme applies a mixed finite element formulation to the vector transport equation, simultaneously solving for the transported field and its vorticity. An approach to stabilising this mixed vector-vorticity formulation is presented that uses a Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method. These schemes are then demonstrated, along with their accuracy properties, through some numerical tests. Two new test cases are used to assess the transport of vector-valued fields on curved manifolds, solving the vector transport equation in isolation. The improvement of the schemes is also shown through two standard test cases for rotating shallow-water models

O presente relatório foi desenvolvido com o intuito de complementar a vasta gama de conhecimento que o treinador de Futebol deve possuir em todas as áreas da modalidade de FutebolThe purpose of this report is to describe and analyze the professional practice of the Mens 1st Team of December 1st, Futebol S.A.D, during 2018/2019 season.
