Towards to the mind-body problem Adam Skowron Janusz Sytnik-Czetwertyński Centrum Medyczne Kształcenia Podyplomowego w Warszawie Abstract The mind-body problem is one of the most difficult challenges of modern science. An interesting attempt at providing a reductionist model of reality was made in the 18th century by Ruder Josip Bošković. The attractiveness of this model lies in the fact that it does not readily fit into any of the above categorizations. Although frequently associated with the third - a fact that laid it open to violent criticism, causing the philosopher serious trouble - it stands apart as an independent theory. For, according to Bošković, reality is neither material nor spiritual. Nor is it a union of both of these orders. Key words: mind-body problem, aspects of the being, non-extended and discrete points, Theory of Everything, atom, monad

Women’s Rules of the Game: A Dispute over Women in the Dialogue <i>Il merito delle donne</i> by Moderata Fonte

    No full text
This paper concerns Moderata Fonte (Modesta dal Pozzo), a female Venetian writer who lived in the 16th century, and a dialogue she wrote, Il merito delle donne (On the Value of Women), in which seven women gathered in a garden have a lively discussion about men and their flaws. The author of the study presents the book and Fonte’s biography in the context of the early-modern dispute over women (querelle des femmes). She then analyses Il merito delle donne in terms of the functionality of both the genre in which it was written and the convention of play (game) that is relevant to the work, in order to answer the question of the importance of these devices for the topic Fonte raises. Skowron writes about what makes Il merito delle donne different from other dialogues published at the time by women, as well as from Balthazar Castiglione’s famous Book of the Courtier (Il libro del Cortegiano), and in discussing the motif of the play she uses the definition of the ludic element of Johan Huizinga of Homo ludens. She points to the presence of particular determinants of play in Il merito delle donne, wondering how the voluntary basis of the game, limited time and space, imposed rules or a situation different from ordinary life affect the female characters’ freedom to express their opinions in discussion, as well as the reception of the work itself. Il merito delle donne owes its unique character to its form because it allows not only different views in a dispute over women to be presented, but above all it involves the reader in a discussion which does not end with the last page of the dialogue

Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto as a Poem on Women. Angelica, Marfisa, Bradamante and their heroic epic representation The article concerns Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, and its interpretation according to which it may be read as a poem about women who break the traditional male monopoly on heroism in the epic literature. The author aims to prove Ariosto’s innovative approach by analyzing Orlando Furioso’s protagonists. Hence the paper is mainly dedicated to three of Ariosto’s characters – Angelica, Marfisa and Bradamante. Those women are presented in a comparative perspective against their traditional prototypes with particular reference to those moments in the poem that render visible Ariosto’s novelty in creating his protagonists. Angelica, Marfisa and Bradamante, especially in contrast with the poem’s male cavalieri seem to be more in line with the canonical representations of heroism. In the first part of the study, the author presents Ariosto’s Angelica, often interpreted as a mere capricious object of man’s desire. Nevertheless, the character appears as self-aware and confident, striving to make her own decision when it comes to choosing the partner for life. The second part of the article is dedicated to Ariosto’s most canonical virago – Marfisa. Undefeated in the battlefield till the end of the poem, she often breaks her stereotypical comical image and consciously resigns from love. The last part of the study concentrates on Bradamante, who combines both amori and armi: the Christian knight, future founder of the Este noble family despite being in constant pursuit of her lover Ruggero, not sacrificing her passion for chivalry. According to the author of the article, Bradamante should be perceived as the central character of Orlando Furioso, as she carries the main idea of Ariosto’s masterpiece

Criteria of Thermal Classifications of Lakes

    No full text
Abstract Since the early twentieth century limnological literature has presented numerous classifications of lakes. Most frequently these classifications refer to genetic systematization. In the latter half of the twentieth century new divisions of inland water bodies were introduced with respect to mictic, trophic and thermal properties. These proposals, however, make up a very diverse and scattered material, particularly due to the considered criteria. The author of this article decided to verify opinions and criteria of these systematisations to provide a better understanding of the problem.</jats:p

Arbitration in employment disputes - de lege ferenda comments 15 years after arbitration clauses in employment relations were introduced in the civil procedure

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the existing model of employment arbitration in Poland in force since 2005. According to Article 1164 of the Code of Civil Procedure, arbitra¬tion clauses in employment disputes can only be established once a dispute has already arisen. In reality, this post-dispute voluntary regulation has no practical value and employment ar- bitration is an instrument used extremely rarely in Poland. On the basis of examination of applicable laws, the author shows that in given factual and legal circumstances a reasonable employee and a reasonable employer shall seldom have a cause to simultaneously agree to arbitrate an already existing dispute. By applying the com- parative method at the same time, the paper examines possible criteria of distinguishing categories of disputes, agreements, persons and other conditions that would permit a valid arbitration clause in employment agreements. In conclusion, the author demonstrates that, firstly, the existing voluntary post-dispute employment arbitration model in Poland is a fictitious one and requires reform and, sec- ondly, that both a full elimination of arbitration clauses in employment agreements and a full arbitration clause for all future disputes are too blunt a tool not taking into account the real needs and requirements of today’s employees and employers. The author calls for a more nu- anced regulation of employment arbitration in Poland

The complete catalogue of light curves in equal-mass binary microlensing

    No full text
This publication was supported by NPRP grant NPRP-09-476-1-78 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). The light curves observed in microlensing events due to binary lenses span an extremely wide variety of forms, characterized by U-shaped caustic crossings and/or additional smoother peaks. However, all peaks of the binary-lens light curve can be traced back to features of caustics of the lens system. Moreover, all peaks can be categorized as one of only four types (cusp-grazing, cusp-crossing, fold-crossing or fold-grazing). This enables us to present the first complete map of the parameter space of the equal-mass case by identifying regions in which light curves feature the same number and nature of peaks. We find that the total number of morphologies that can be obtained is 73 out of 232 different regions. The partition of the parameter space so-obtained provides a new key to optimize modelling of observed events through a clever choice of initial conditions for fitting algorithms.Peer reviewe

Constitutional Right to Resistance in Europe. A Comparative Study

    No full text
The purpose of the article is an analysis of the right to resistance present in European constitutions, mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. The author defines the concept, indicates its origins, provides its classification and explains reasons justifying contemporary shape of this institution in fundamental laws of European states. The author, applying comparative method (according to the procedure of K. Zweigert and H. Kötza), as well as formal-dogmatic and functional methods as auxiliary means, offers a systematic summary of the results achieved due to the comparison and delivers a critical assessment of such results. The result of the research proves that the right to resistance may be deducted and conceptualized from the principle of a democratic state of law contained in the Polish constitution

Efektywność w zarządzaniu kapitałem intelektualnym na przykładzie wybranych sektorów: Efficiency in intellectual capital management based on selected sectors

    No full text
This paper presents a method for measuring the value of intangible assets in selected companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange which belong to two sectors: fuel and automotive industries. In this study author identifies how intangibles create added value for the organization. For that purpose the two indicators being used for estimating intangible assets, are: VAIC (Value Added Intellectual Coefficient) - the intellectual indicator of the value added and the q-Tobina indicator. Based on available information included in financial statements of examined enterprises the author made analysis for forming these indicators in the years 2007-2011.W artykule zaprezentowano metody służące oszacowaniu wartości niematerialnych w wybranych przedsiębiorstwach notowanych na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie należących do dwóch sektorów: paliwowego i motoryzacyjnego.
