Sitek’s review of the book by Magdalena Kempna-Pieniążek Neo-noir. Ciemne zwierciadło czasów kryzysu [Neo-noir. Dark Reflection of the Times of Crisis] (2015). He argues that contemporary undefined and multiform crises touch every inhabitant of the global village, and the book by Magdalena Kempna-Pieniążek, the first Polish monograph devoted to the area of neo-noir cinema, is a film based analysis of this phenomenon. The author’s diagnosis connected to the neo-noir cinema are accompanied by necessary clarifications in terms of definitions, typology and time periods. The author of the book summarizes and compares positions, traditions and possible research approaches to the problem, which leads her to formulate the key theses of the publication. According to her from neo-noir productions there emerges a continuous feeling of confusion, which forces one to redefine terms related to identity, gender roles, perception of the world and humanity. Sitek in his review touches not only on the typical elements of review related to the theme and the structure of the publication, but also on the question of editing. In particular he appreciated the richness of the illustrations and the book’s accessibility not only to the readers representing the scientific community, but also ordinary cinema fans

The Land of Aeternal Hapiness is Wojciech Sitek\u27s review article dedicated to the first monograph in the Polish language, dedicated to films on coming of age. Karolina Kostyra, the author of the book Wiosenna bujność traw. Obrazy przyrody w filmach o dorastaniu,  observes that within the coming of age  genre nature affects young people in a particularly significant way. During puberty, it is always so fertile and expansive that it abducts the adolescent into its depths and transforms them forever, preparing them to face adult life. At times, the publication, which nominally represents the discipline of film studies, transmogrifies into a general reflection upon the world and the place of the human in its all-encompassing order. The Author attempts to penetrate the essence by resorting to a variety of sources: she seeks adequate tropes in the Jungian mythographic criticism, she alludes to the motifs of magical and religious symbols as described by Mircea Eliade, and follows Bruno Bettelheim in reflecting upon the externalizing function of a folk tale. Her personal, emotionally vested reflection and the melancholy tone of the book closely correspond with the overarching themes of the coming=of-age films. The yearning thus has its source in the experiences of the proatonists as well as in the personal quest of the Author, who remains vividily engaged in her account of the tales of the borderlands between childhood and adulthood. W Krainie wiecznego szczęścia Wojciech Sitek recenzuje pierwszą polskojęzyczną monografię poświęconą filmom o dorastaniu. Autonomy of local communities from the perspective of Roman law and modern normative solutions

    No full text
The subject of the study is to present the concept of local autonomy from a historical and comparative perspective. The work will analyze the provisions of Roman law and Polish law. The work also includes references to the solutions in other selected legal systems. The basic assumption of the author is to accept the hypothesis that the autonomy of ancient municipalities was much wider than today. This was undoubtedly due to a different concept of the state. The contemporary state aims at full control over the organization of society. The Roman state was limited to taking such actions that were necessary. Thus, the principle of subsidiarity was better implemented in antiquity. The intervention of central authorities was essentially limited to the implementation of tasks that exceeded the capacity of the local community. Currently, it is the central authority that decides about the form and scope of local governments

Non … delinquere eum, qui in dubiis quaestionibus contra fiscum … responderit. About freedom of speech of lawyers

    No full text
Objectives The subject of this study is the analysis of the text of Modestinus D. 49.14.10. This is an excerpt rarely interpreted by Romanists. The aim of this analysis is to show its significance for the author, Justinian compilers and contemporary romanists. Material and methods The implementation of this goal is achieved through the application of the legal-historical and dogmatic analysis of this text. The most important, however, is the analysis of the original location by Modestyn. This will allow to show the meaning that the author gave him. Results The result of these interpretive procedures is the demonstration that for Justinian an compilers it was a text guaranteeing the freedom of oral and written expression of advocates or trial lawyers in the judicial proceeding against the tax office. Conclusions Thus, the fragment of Modestinus became an archetype of modern lawyer's immunity, consisting in the possibility of free discussion and argumentation during court hearings and in legal opinions

Roman Law and New Technologies – Timeless Principles in the Digital Era

    No full text
This article examines how technological innovations in ancient Rome – particularly in road construction – contributed to the empire’s durability and efficiency. By analyzing legal sources, archaeological findings, and historical texts, the author demonstrates that modern digital technologies (AI, 3D modeling, laser scanning) facilitate the reconstruction of ancient infrastructure and highlight the continued relevance of Roman engineering and legal principles. The author argues that Roman engineering solutions, along with legal regulations pertaining to public infrastructure, contributed to the creation of a durable and efficient communication network throughout the Roman Empire. The study is based on the analysis of literary sources, legal texts, and archaeological findings. It demonstrates that Roman law focused primarily on safeguarding public access and ensuring the maintenance of infrastructure, rather than on prescribing detailed technical norms governing construction. Contemporary digital technologies enable in-depth investigations into ancient Roman construction techniques and facilitate the reconstruction of historical structures. The author emphasizes that the engineering and organizational accomplishments of ancient Rome remain relevant and continue to serve as an inspiration for modern interdisciplinary research concerning civilizational heritage. The article concludes by asserting that both ancient and modern technological innovations constitute vital drivers of civilizational development and progress

Objectives The purpose of the analysis is to examine the changes taking place in the proven central banking model in Poland in terms of law and in terms of changing the level of security for financial market stability in Poland, in particular the banking sector in Poland. Material and methods Research methods used in the article are characteristic for social sciences: from typically legal methods, such as analysis of legal regulations and doctrines, which make up a full understanding of law, through analysis of financial data published by financial institutions, up to analysis of press statements to show the latest legal and factual status. Legal-dogmatic methods and data analysis were supported by the descriptive method, which contributed to the conclusions summarizing the study. The author based on current, official data published on institutions’ websites. Results The results obtained lead us to know much better about functioning banking system in Poland and the position of the National Bank of Poland. Conclusions Between 1989–1992 Poland underwent a transformation from a monobank to a free market with an independent central bank. The rules for managing the NBP foreign exchange reserves are an extremely important issue. Public information indicates that actual changes have been made to the management of reserves by importing foreign exchange reserves in gold to Poland. The analysis of the purposefulness and possible reasons for the change in the approach to foreign exchange reserves in Poland will be undertaken in a separate publication
