The Role of the Internet in Research on BDSM
No full textThe internet has had a transformational impact on social and sexual aspects of life. However, research in BDSM studies has not fully engaged with this social trend. In this short critical review of the existing literature, how BDSM studies has engaged with this trend is discussed, alongside the limitations of this research. A summary of the literature on the internet and sexuality more broadly is provided, before turning to how BDSM studies has focused primarily on FetLife as a way of reaching community participants. The chapter concludes by highlighting four distinct areas that future BDSM studies should develop and expand to enhance the understanding of the effect of the internet on BDSM broadly conceived and advance the field of critical BDSM studies
The Kink Orientation Scale: Developing and Validating a Measure of Kink Desire, Practice, and Identity
Get PDFKink, often referred to as BDSM, is an important aspect of a sizable minority’s sexual desires, practices, and personal relationships, yet there are few ways to assess kink engagement in a holistic manner. This study aimed to develop the Kink Orientation Scale (KOS), a novel short tool for measuring different aspects of kink sexuality. In phase one, 27 items were created and included in the initial scale based on a literature review and focus groups with kinky and non-kinky individuals. In phase two, the KOS was administered to 200 university students. Exploratory Factor Analyses (EFA) were used to determine the factor structure and dimensionality of the KOS, and we retained 18 items in the scale and identified five factors. In phase three, the 18 item KOS was administered to a kink sample of 1025 participants as a form of validation. Confirmatory Factor Analyses also identified five factors with a strong overlap to the EFA. The five factors were: kink identity; kink community; kink paraphernalia; kink practices; and sexual communication. The kink sample also provided higher scores on the KOS compared with the non-kink sample. This study shows the potential utility of the KOS in measuring kink engagement holistically
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A new macrofaunal limit in the deep biosphere revealed by extreme burrow depths in ancient sediments
Get PDFMacrofauna is known to inhabit the top few 10s cm of marine sediments, with rare burrows up to two metres below the seabed. Here, we provide evidence from deep-water Permian strata for a previously unrecognised habitat up to at least 8 metres below the sediment-water interface. Infaunal organisms exploited networks of forcibly injected sand below the seabed, forming living traces and reworking sediment. This is the first record that shows sediment injections are responsible for hosting macrofaunal life metres below the contemporaneous seabed. In addition, given the widespread occurrence of thick sandy successions that accumulate in deep-water settings, macrofauna living in the deep biosphere are likely much more prevalent than considered previously. These findings should influence future sampling strategies to better constrain the depth range of infaunal animals living in modern deep-sea sands. One Sentence Summary: The living depth of infaunal macrofauna is shown to reach at least 8 metres in new habitats associated with sand injections

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Changes in the Characteristics of the Australian Business Cycle: Some Lessons for Monetary Policy from the 1980s and Early 1990s
Get PDFThis paper examines the causes of asset price inflation and deflation in the Australian economy, their links with borrowing and recent problems that have arisen for banks’ balance sheets. Implications for the business cycle and monetary policy are drawn out in some detail. The difficulties encountered are attributed partly to the once-for-all transition from regulated to deregulated financial markets, and it is argued that it would be wrong to extrapolate recent developments into the future . It is suggested that arguments to make asset price inflation an explicit objective of monetary policy are not helpful. The paper goes to point out some encouraging new trends in Australia’s linkages with the rest of the world. Export performance has been greatly enhanced by longer-term reforms and exchange rate depreciation during the 1980s.

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
