Despite the difficult economic situation of the inhabitants of the Wieluń district in the Second Polish Republic and the necessity for their emigration mainly to Germany for work purposes, they were characterised by deep religiousness. Bishop Teodor Kubina underlined this fact many times in his utterances. It had an influence on the organisation of the Eucharistic Congress, which was the third most important one in the diocese of Częstochowa, between 27th–29th June 1931 in the town of Wieluń. It took place with the involvement of the inhabitants of the Wieluń district, who walked in the pilgrimage from their parishes, which reflected their great respect towards the Divine Sacrament. This event deepened their religiousness, and it resulted in an even greater engagement in the activities of the Catholic associations.Mimo trudnej sytuacji gospodarczej mieszkańców powiatu wieluńskiego w II Rzeczypospolitej i związanej z nią konieczności emigrowania głównie do Niemiec w celach zarobkowych charakteryzowali się oni głęboką religijnością. Wielokrotnie bp Teodor Kubina podkreślał to w swoich wypowiedziach.

After Poland regained independence, Bishop Stanisław Zdzitowiecki proposed reorganizing the diocesan network and became involved in the creation of the Diocese of Częstochowa. He was motivated about this for pastoral reasons (related to the too large territory of the then Diocese of Kujawy and Kalisz), social reasons (concerningthe specificity of work among the working population of Częstochowa and Dąbrowa Basin) and religious reasons (resulting from the role of Jasna Góra Monastery in Poland). The proposition to create the Diocese of Częstochowa was accepted by the entire episcopate. Until 1924, the shape of its borders was discussed. The establishment of a diocese was approved in 1925 in the concordat concluded between the Holy See and the Second Polish Republic and the bull of pope Pius XI: Vixdum Poloniae unitas. Jej powstanie zostało zatwierdzone w 1925 r. w konkordacie zawartym pomiędzy Stolicą Apostolską i II Rzeczpospolitą oraz w bulli papieża Piusa XI Vixdum Poloniae unitas

A difficult financial situation, which resulted from high unemployment, was the main problem that the society of the Wieluń district had to face, after Poland regained its independence. This resulted in a tremendous increase of seasonal emigration to Western European countries for working purposes. The working population lost their contact with the Catholic faith there. In order to provide care for the religious life of emigrant diocese members, Bishop Teodor Kubina established “The Association of Polish Emigrants under the care of the Queen of the Polish Crown in the diocese of Częstochowa” whose goal was to unite seasonal workers, raise their level of morality and strengthen their patriotic attitudes. A particular group of diocese members, who was affected by the above-mentioned association, consisted of the residents of the Wieluń district.Głównym problemem, z jakim musiało się zmierzyć społeczeństwo powiatu wieluńskiego po odzyskaniu przez Polskę niepodległości, była trudna sytuacja materialna, będąca skutkiem wysokiego poziomu bezrobocia. Wpłynęło to na ogromne zwiększenie wychodźstwa sezonowego do krajów Europy Zachodniej w celach zarobkowych. Ludność robotnicza traciła tam kontakt z wiarą katolicką. W trosce o życie religijne emigrujących diecezjan bp Teodor Kubina zorganizował „Stowarzyszenie Wychodźców Polskich pod opieką Królowej Korony Polskiej w diecezji częstochowskiej”, którego celem było zjednoczenie robotników sezonowych, podniesienie wśród nich poziomu moralnego i ugruntowanie postaw patriotycznych. Szczególną grupą diecezjan, którzy zostali objęci oddziaływaniem stowarzyszenia, byli mieszkańcy powiatu wieluńskiego

Deep religiousness, beside a typically agricultural character of employment, was one of the most distinguishing features of the inhabitants of the district of Wieluń. It was manifested by i.e., a huge engagement in new forms of Christian ministry, which were initiated in circumstances of unrestricted activity of the Catholic Church after 1918. Irrespectively of it, the inhabitants of the Wieluń district were characterised by deep Marian piety, which was expressed in many ways. Beside their participation in services devoted to Our Lady, engagement in the Confraternity of the Rosary, distribution of magazines devotedto this issue as well as special respect paid to images of Our Lady, they took part in numerous pilgrimages. The Jasna Góra Monastery was the main goal of pilgrims. The faithful of this area accounted for the biggest group among all the groups from the whole Diocese of Częstochowa taking part in pilgrimages to the city of Częstochowa. Poza udziałem w nabożeństwach poświęconych Matce Bożej, działalności w bractwach różańcowych, kolportowaniu czasopism o tej tematyce i otaczaniu szczególnymszacunkiem wizerunków maryjnych, uczestniczyli oni w licznych pielgrzymkach. Wierni z tych terenów stanowili największą grupę spośród wszystkich pielgrzymujących do Częstochowy z całej diecezji częstochowskiej

The largest Jewish religious commune in the district of Wieluń during the Second Polish Republic was located in the town of Wieluń. It gathered about 5,000 followers of Judaism. The work of Kehilla was managed by the Board and the Council with the help of many employees who got involved, among other things, in the maintenance of a synagogue, a commune building, a ritual bathhouse, a ritual slaughterhouse and religious schools. The rabbi and the assistant rabbi enjoyed the great recognition of the inhabitants of Wieluń. Despite the then prevailing financial crisis, the Jewish commune in Wieluń undertook social and charitable activities on a large scale through the maintenance and financing of numerous institutions, including Jewish schools.

The Jasna Góra Monastery has played an important role, both a religous and patriotic one, in the Polish past. The significance of “the Spiritual Capital of Poland” was emphasised by the activity of subsequent Popes as well as by visits of the last Popes to Częstochowa. Paul VI’s unfulfilled desire to be present there during the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland was fulfilled by John Paul II, who visited the Jasna Góra Monastery six times, and later by his Successor, Benedict XVI. The Pope’s stay in Częstochowa became a chance to strengthen consecrated people, seminarians, andrepresentatives of Catholic associations in faith. This proclamation was addressed to the above-mentioned groups of believers from all over the country. The presence of the Pope and the homily delivered by him was welcomed with enthusiasm by numerous pilgrims, to whom Marian piety was an important element of religious life. Przesłanie to zostało skierowane do wskazanych grup wiernych z całego kraju.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
