Finding Degree-Constrained Acyclic Orientations
No full textWe consider the problem of orienting a given, undirected graph into a (directed) acyclic graph such that the in-degree of each vertex ν is in a prescribed list λ(ν). Variants of this problem have been studied for a long time and with various applications, but mostly without the requirement for acyclicity. Without this requirement, the problem is closely related to the classical General Factor problem, which is known to be NP-hard in general, but polynomial-time solvable if no list λ(ν) contains large "gaps" [Cornuejols, J. Comb. Theory B, 1988]. In contrast, we show that deciding if an acyclic orientation exists is NP-hard even in the absence of such "gaps". On the positive side, we design parameterized algorithms for various, natural parameterizations of the acyclic orientation problem. A special case of the orientation problem with degree constraints recently came up in the context of reconstructing evolutionary histories (that is, phylogenetic networks). This phylogenetic setting imposes additional structure onto the problem that can be exploited algorithmically, allowing us to show fixed-parameter tractability when parameterized by either the treewidth of G (a smaller parameter than the frequently employed "level"), by the number of vertices ν for which |λ(ν)| ≥ 2, by the number of vertices ν for which the highest value in λ(ν) is at least 2. Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

We wstępie oraz w pierwszym rozdziale rozprawy autor przedstawia charakterystykę własnej postawy badawczej usytuowanej w szeroko pojętym nurcie badań nad wyobraźniowością (G. Durand, S. Vierne oraz M. Eliade). W późniejszych rozważaniach autora, nurt ten będzie reprezentowany szczególnie poprzez idee G. Duranda i M. Eliade. Wyspa ta stopniowo traci swoje właściwości symboliczne aby stać się miejscem utopiii społecznej podporządkowanej dyktatowi logiki racjonalnej.This dissertation is aimed at presenting basic aspects of island sacralisation that occurs in the prose by Julius Verne. In the introduction and the first chapter the author characterizes his own research approach, which belongs to a broad current of the imaginary (G. Durand, S. Vierne and M. Eliade). In the discussion that follows, this current will be represented especially by the ideas of G. Durand and M. Eliade. The author has conceived this broad presentation of the research approach as the starting point for the systematic analysis of individual mechanisms responsible for the process of the island territory sacralisation (an island as a manifestation place of hierofania, symbolism, axis-mundi, the regeneration place of the Great Mythical Time, the island territory as the seat located in the symbolic 'centre of the world', the Jonah complex and an island as a paradise garden). The last aspect seems to the particularly interesting, as it enables to show an important role of scents (cinnamon, cardamom) in developing the literary image of the paradise island space. According to the proposed title (Les paradis impossibles de Jules Verne : vers la mort de l'île symbolique), the last chapter of the dissertation is dedicated to showing all the aspects of disagreement with the previously sketched sacralisation perspective of the island territory. According to the author, the above-mentioned aspects may be included in the categories of the geographic, moral and ontological impossibility (impossibilité) of Julius Verne's paradises. The author understands the ontological impossibility to be the situation presented vividly by the Antékirtta island in the Mathias Sandorf novel. The island losses its symbolic characteristics gradually, to become the place of social utopia surrendered to the dictate of rational logic.La présente étude prend pour objectif de montrer les aspects les plus importants de la sacralisation de l'île, processus symbolique qui s'esquisse dans la prose de Jules Verne. Dans l'introduction et dans le chapitre premier de l'étude, l'auteur présente son positionnement méthodologique situé dans le sillage des recherches sur l'imaginaire (G. Durand, S. Vierne, et M. Eliade). Dans toutes les réflexions ultérieures, ce courant sera surtout représenté par les idées de G. Durand et M. Eliade. Dans l'intention de l'auteur, une présentation aussi vaste de son positionnement méthodologique constitue un bon point de départ pour une analyse systématique des mécanismes fondateurs de sacralité insulaire : île comme lieu de manifestation d'hiérophanies, symbolisme axis-mundi, lieu de régénération du Grand Temps Mythique, lieu d'emplacement de la demeure humaine située « au centre du monde », complexe de Jonas et homologation entre l'île et le jardin paradisiaque. Le dernier aspect cité semble particulierement intéressant, car il permet de démontrer le rôle important des odeurs paradisiaques (cannelle, cardamone et autres) dans la construction de l'image littéraire des territoires paradisiaques verniens. Conformément au titre proposé (Les paradis impossibles de Jules Verne : vers la mort de l'île symbolique), le dernier chapitre de l'étude est consacré à mettre en lumière tous les aspects incompatibles avec la vision de la sacralisation de l'espace insulaire. Selon l'auteur, ces aspects peuvent être classés en catégories d'impossibilité géographique, morale et ontologique. Par impossibilité ontologique, l'auteur entend la situation présentée dans le cas de l'île Antékirtta mise en scène dans le roman Mathias Sandorf. No full textW artykule prezentujemy nieznany plan Krakowa i okolic z dołączonym doń opisem wykonanym w języku szwedzkim, obecnie przechowywany w Archiwum Królestwa (Riksarkivet) w Sztokholmie. Przeprowadzamy analizę okoliczności powstania tego dzieła, która wskazuje, że źródło powstało w dniach 1–7 października 1655 r. Dokument stanowił fragment niezachowanego obecnie listu, a jego celem było zobrazowanie wydarzeń wojennych za pomocą prymitywu kartograficznego uzupełnionego legendą. Zjawisko to lokujemy na szerszym tle ówczesnych przemian światopoglądowych kształtowanych poprzez coraz popularniejsze drukowane atlasy i mapy. Autorem planu musiała być osoba wykształcona i dysponująca sporą wyobraźnią przestrzenną opartą na częstym korzystaniu z map i planów, ale nie był to inżynier wojskowy lub kartograf. Stawiamy hipotezę, że prawdopodobnym jego twórcą był Mathias Palbitzki, dyplomata i koneser sztuki.In this article we present an unknown map of Krakow (compared to other cartographic sources) and its surroundings with the attached description in Swedish and stored in the National Archives of Sweden. We are scrutinizing the circumstances in which this work came into being, which indicates that the source was created at the beginning of October 1655. This document was attached to an unpreserved letter which was probably sent to the Scandinavian Peninsula. We intend to present this relic as an attempt to depict war events in an epistolographic message through a two-dimensional representation of space with a legend. We place this attempt against the broader background of the worldview changes of the time, shaped by the ever more popular atlases and printed maps. The map and the legend were to complement the epistolographic message, common in the correspondence of the diplomatic and military elites of the 17th century. The author must have been an educated person with considerable spatial imagination. This person’s intellectual horizons are evidenced by, among others, the knowledge of the chorography of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Diversifying history:A large-scale analysis of changes in researcher demographics and scholarly agendas
No full textBackground In recent years, interest has grown in whether and to what extent demographic diversity sparks discovery and innovation in research. At the same time, topic modeling has been employed to discover differences in what women and men write about. This study engages these two strands of scholarship to explore associations between changing researcher demographics and research questions asked in the discipline of history. Specifically, we analyze developments in history as women entered the field. Methods We focus on author gender in diachronic analysis of history dissertations from 1980 (when online data is first available) to 2015 and a select set of general history journals from 1950 to 2015. We use correlated topic modeling and network visualizations to map developments in research agendas over time and to examine how women and men have contributed to these developments. Results Our summary snapshot of aggregate interests of women and men for the period 1950 to 2015 identifies new topics associated with women authors: gender and women’s history, body history, family and households, consumption and consumerism, and sexuality. Diachronic analysis demonstrates that while women pioneered topics such as gender and women’s history or the history of sexuality, these topics broaden over time to become methodological frameworks that historians widely embraced and that changed in interesting ways as men engaged with them. Our analysis of history dissertations surface correlations between advisor/advisee gender pairings and choice of dissertation topic. Conclusions Overall, this quantitative longitudinal study suggests that the growth in women historians has coincided with the broadening of research agendas and an increased sensitivity to new topics and methodologies in the field.</p
Students’ perspective on Web 2.0-enhanced telecollaboration as added value in translator education
No full textThe development of soft skills, which are the most critical skills in the global job market (Abbas & Hum, 2013), is an essential goal of contemporary translator education (Mathias, 2013). A solution that permits students to simultaneously develop translation skills and soft skills is telecollaboration (Dooly & O’Dowd, 2012), i.e. the use of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) for collaborative project work. This paper investigates students’ views of the usefulness of telecollaboration in translator education, particularly in relation to the development of soft skills. Initially the author introduces the notions of soft skills (Bartel, 2011; Mathias, 2013) and telecollaboration (Belz, 2003; Dooly & O’Dowd, 2013). Then he demonstrates how the latter links to the development of the former (Fleet, 2013; Keedwell, 2013). Finally, he reports the results of a survey study on students’ perceptions of the value of CMC in translator education
Recent advances in minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery
No full textLaparoscopy has improved surgical treatment of various diseases due to its limited surgical trauma and has developed as an interesting therapeutic alternative for the resection of colorectal cancer. Despite numerous clinical advantages (faster recovery, less pain, fewer wound and systemic complications, faster return to work) the laparoscopic approach to colorectal cancer therapy has also resulted in unusual complications, i.e. ureteral and bladder injury which are rarely observed with open laparotomy. Moreover, pneumothorax, cardiac arrhythmia, impaired venous return, venous thrombosis as well as peripheral nerve injury have been associated with the increased intraabdominal pressure as well as patient's positioning during surgery. Furthermore, undetected small bowel injury caused by the grasping or cauterizing instruments may occur with laparoscopic surgery. In contrast to procedures performed for nonmalignant conditions, the benefits of laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer must be weighed against the potential for poorer long-term outcomes of cancer patients that still has not been completely ruled out. In laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, several important cancer control issues still are being evaluated, i.e. the extent of lymph node dissection, tumor implantation at port sites, adequacy of intraperitoneal staging as well as the distance between tumor site and resection margins. For the time being it can be assumed that there is no significant difference in lymph node harvest between laparoscopic and open colorectal cancer surgery if oncological principles of resection are followed. As far as the issue of port site recurrence is concerned, it appears to be less prevalent than first thought (range 0-2.5%), and the incidence apparently corresponds with wound recurrence rates observed after open procedures. Short-term (3-5 years) survival rates have been published by a number of investigators, and survival rates after laparoscopic surgery appears to compare well with data collected after conventional surgery for colorectal cancer. However, long-term results of prospective randomized trials are not available. The data published so far indicate that the oncological results of laparoscopic surgery compare well with the results of the conventional open approach. Nonetheless, the limited information available from prospective studies leads us to propose that minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer surgery should only be performed within prospective trials

Various cases are used to demonstrate that resistance by different stakeholders including minority shareholders, organized labour and the government may present powerful obstacles to takeovers in Germany. In spite of the overall convergence of European takeover and securities trading laws, Germany still shows many peculiarities that make its market for corporate control distinct from other countries. Concentrated share ownership, cross shareholdings and pyramidal ownership structures are frequent barriers to acquiring majority stakes. Codetermination laws, the supervisory board structure and supermajority requirements for important corporate decisions limit the execution of control by majority shareholders.
