"Through the windows of a Baptist Meeting House": Religion, politics and the Nonconformist Conscience in the life of Sir George White, M.P.
With the compilation of the New Dictionary of National Biography, under the
general editorship of Colin Matthew, the contributions of many more of the Free
Church men and women who helped shape nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain
will be acknowledged. Among the debutants in the revised canon of great Britons
will be Sir George White MP, 1 the man described by the British Weekly as the
'foremost lay leader of English Nonconformity in our generation' ,2 yet a politician
largely ignored by historians of Edwardian Britain.3 This is a significant oversight,
for White featured prominently in Free-Church politics in the early twentieth
century, chairing the Nonconformist Committee in the House of Commons and
acting as a bridge between old-style dissenting Radicalism and the new(er)
Liberalism of practical politicians like Lloyd George.4 Although 'plain and modest'
with 'no pretentions to brilliance', White reached the top in business, politics and
the Baptist denomination through the classic Victorian virtues of hard work,
dedication and devotion,S his success resting, in part, on his power as a speaker
with 'the enviable faculty granted to the best speakers of saying, and thinking clearly
and strongly while he is on his feet,.6 This paper, which is based primarily on
press reports of his life and death, will outline White's achievements in religion,
business and politics, illustrating the way these elements interacted, and looking, in
particular, at the three areas in which religion most obviously influenced his political
views: class relations, education and temperance

Reaching older people with PA delivered in football clubs: the reach, adoption and implementation characteristics of the Extra Time Programme.
Background Older adults (OA) represent a core priority group for physical activity and Public Health policy. As a result, significant interest is placed on how to optimise adherence to interventions promoting these approaches. Extra Time (ET) is an example of a national programme of physical activity interventions delivered in professional football clubs for OA aged 55+ years. This paper aims to examine the outcomes from ET, and unpick the processes by which these outcomes were achieved. Methods This paper represents a secondary analysis of data collected during the evaluation of ET. From the 985 OA reached by ET, n=486 adopted the programme and completed post-intervention surveys (typically 12 weeks). We also draw on interview data with 18 ET participants, and 7 staff who delivered the programme. Data were subject to thematic analysis to generate overarching and sub themes. Results Of the 486 participants, the majority 95%, (n= 462) were White British and 59.7% (n=290) were female. Most adopters (65.4%/n=318) had not participated in previous interventions in the host clubs. Social interaction was the most frequently reported benefit of participation (77.2%, n=375). While the reach of the club badge was important in letting people know about the programme, further work enhanced adoption and satisfaction. These factors included (i) listening to participants, (ii) delivering a flexible age-appropriate programme of diverse physical and social activities, (iii) offering activities which satisfy energy drives and needs for learning and (iv) extensive opportunities for social engagement. Conclusions Findings emerging from this study indicate that physical activity and health interventions delivered through professional football clubs can be effective for engaging OA

MRI (T1-weighted) and DTI data were collected for all participants. Using the Johns Hopkins University white matter fiber tractography template, we calculated the values of fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD), and mean diffusivity (MD).Results: Compared to the HC group, the PA group showed significant increases in AD in cingulum bundle cingulate part (CgC.R), forceps minor (FMi), bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculi (IFO), and right temporo-superior longitudinal fasciculus (tSLF.R); RD in left IFO (IFO.L) and right superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF.R); and MD in FMi, IFO.L, right IFO (IFO.R) and SLF.R.Conclusion: Compensatory white matter alterations occur in PA patients before cognitive impairment. Dispersion or Concentration for the 1.5 Generation?: Destination Choices of the Children of Immigrants in the U.S.
This paper examines determinants of destination choice for foreign-born and 1.5 generation adult children of immigrants in the U.S. An immigrant concentration- weighted accessibility parameter is included to assess the spatial structure of destination choice. A comparative origin-destination immigrant-native wage gap measure is also a strong determinant of destination choice, indicating the importance of relative labor market position. Although spatial assimilation perspectives would suggest that intergenerational social mobility should be connected with spatial dispersion, these models reveal the continuing importance of immigrant concentration for the 1.5 generation. Further, the increased model strength and parameter estimates associated with immigrant concentration and the accessibility measure suggest the spatial structure of destination choice depends on immigrant concentration at multiple scales – both to metro areas and to immigrant states or regions. The paper thus presents evidence for and suggests more attention to theorizing the geographic contexts of intergenerational immigrant incorporation

Interactions of<i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>PA-IIL lectin with quail egg white glycoproteins
Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces several lectins, including the galactophilic PA-IL and the fucose- and mannose-binding PA-IIL. The great advantage of these two lectins is their stability in purified preparations. Following observations that pigeon egg white blocks Escherichia coli P-fimbriae and PA-IL, we examined the interactions of diverse avian egg white components with PA-IIL. This lectin may represent both mannose- and fucose-specific microbial adhesins. For comparison, Con A (which also binds mannose) and Ulex europaeus lectin (UEA-I, which binds fucose) were analyzed in parallel. The lectin interactions with chicken, quail, and pigeon egg whites and several purified chicken egg white glycoproteins were examined by a hemagglutination inhibition test and Western blotting. Both analyses showed that like Con A and unlike UEA-I, which was not sensitive to any of these three egg whites, PA-IIL most strongly reacted with the quail egg white. However, in contrast with Con A, its interactions with the chicken egg white components, excluding avidin, were very poor. The results of this study might indicate the possibility that some of the egg white components that interacted with the above two mannose-binding lectins (exhibiting individual heterogeneity) might be associated with the innate immunity against mannose-specific microbial or viral adhesion during the fowl embryonic period.Key words: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, microbial lectin, PA-IIL lectin, avian egg white.</jats:p
Treatment of norovirus particles with citrate
Human norovirus is a dominant cause of acute gastroenteritis around the world. Several norovirus disinfectants label citric acid as an active ingredient. In this study, we showed that norovirus virus-like particles (VLPs) treated with citrate buffer caused the particles to alter their morphology, including increased diameters associated with a new ring-like structure. We also found that epitopes on the protruding (P) domain on these particles were more readily accessible to antibodies after the citrate treatment. These results suggested that citrate had a direct effect on the norovirus particles. Using X-ray crystallography, we showed that the P domain bound citrate from lemon juice and a disinfectant containing citric acid. Importantly, citrate binds at the histo-blood group antigen binding pocket, which are attachment factors for norovirus infections. Taken together, these new findings suggested that it might be possible to treat/reduce norovirus infections with citrate, although further studies are needed.No Full Tex
