Antoon Pelsser (1968) is Head of the Asset-Liability Matching department of ING-Insurance. The ALM department advises the board on the optimal asset allocation to cover the insurance liabilities. The department is also responsible for the calculation of market values and risk measures of insurance contracts. He also holds a part-time position as Professor of Mathematical Finance at the Econometric Institute at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. His research interests focus on pricing models for interest rate derivatives, the pricing of insurance contracts and Asset-Liability Management of insurance contracts. He has published in several academic journals including Finance and Stochastics, Journal of Derivatives, European Journal of Operational Research and European Finance Review. He is also author of the book Efficient Methods for Valuing Interest Rate Derivatives, published by Springer Verlag. In this inaugural address Professor Pelsser investigates how one can strike a balance between investmens with a high expected return and high risk (e.g. stocks) versus low-risk investments with a low return (e.g.bonds). Using an example of a life-insurance company he shows in this address how one can employ optimisation-techniques to make a trade-off between the desire to find an investment return as high as possible under the constraint that the insurance company should be able to meet its obligations to the policyholders under all economic circumstances

Views of twelve cities in the Low Countries by the Flemish artist Antoon van den Wijngaerde (c. 1510-1571) have survived: Amsterdam, Brugge, Brussels, Damme, Dordrecht, Duinkerke, Gravelines, ’s-Hertogenbosch, Leuven, Mechelen, Sluis, and Utrecht. Van den Wijngaerde was known for his mastery of topographically accurate and beautiful depictions of cities. The artist entered the service of Philip II in 1557 and between 1557 and 1561 he produced panoramas of cities in the Low Countries for the Spanish king. Between 1562 and 1571 Van den Wijngaerde travelled the length and breadth of Spain, depicting over sixty Spanish cities using much the same techniques. In most Spanish cities the artist was able to make his sketches from a hill or mountain, where he had a good overall view. It was a different story in the Low Countries. So how did Van den Wijngaerde manage to render the Netherlandish cities, most of them located on flat land, as if seen from a high viewing point with a sweeping view of the city and surrounding landscape? Van den Wijngaerde followed a fixed routine in setting up his city views, but he also made clever use of the local situation. He seized on any high point outside the city and allowed that to determine his direction of view. When several preparatory studies were necessary, he preferred to make them all looking in the same direction: the city roofscape viewed from outside the city, prominent buildings viewed from the city outskirts, and the surrounding area from the highest point in the city. This resulted in city views that were effectively a composite of three preparatory studies. When the local situation did not favour this approach, Van den Wijngaerde looked for alternatives, such as preliminary studies from more than three viewing points. In determining the viewing points that Van den Wijngaerde adopted when drawing cities in the Low Countries, the author consulted the town plans drawn by Van den Wijngaerde’s contemporary Jacob van Deventer (c. 1500-1575).History, Form & Aesthetic

This study aims to shed light on the novel "Ya Maryam" by the Iraqi novelist Sinan Antoon, and to discuss the manifestations of violence and Sectarianism that the novel portrays. Noting that Iraq has faced and is still facing Sectarianism in its most gruesome forms for over a decade, which in turn particularly affects the minorities - including Christians - in that sect. This study aims to discuss the narrative style and plot in tackling these themes, and the techniques the author used to deliver his message on several axes, namely: First - the title.  Second - the sequence of events, and manifestations of violence: - Summary of the novel. - The characters: spanning over two generations, pictures of yesterday's Iraq and today's Iraq, and the gap between both caused by the American occupation in 2003.  Third - Symbolism

The Marriage of Ego and Id. Cognitive Integration and its Relation to Mystical Experience

    No full text
Abstract in UndeterminedThe author suggests a new model for interpretation of mystical experience, based on a fruitful combination of cognitive psychology and depth psychology. Offering a rather wide definition of mystical experience, the author then turns to two basic assumptions—a general systems approach and an organismic-holistic view of development. Hans Loewald's analysis of primary process cognition is combined with a multi-dimensional model of cognitive activity called "Interacting Cognitive Subsystems" (ICS), presented by John D. Teasdale and Philip J. Barnard. These two complementary theoretical perspectives are applied to the analysis of both historical and contemporary examples of mystical experience, understood as a result of a dialectical interplay between these different coding systems, or the marriage between Ego and Id

Abstract: As an exercise of the body-text, this article attempts to partially describe the performance of the translation process of the Iraqi novel Wahdaha chajarat ar-ruman (2010) (The Corpse Washer, 2013, translated by the author), by Sinan Antoon, from Arabic to Brazilian Portuguese. Starting from the context of its production, which dates back to the US military invasion of Iraq in 2003, the narrative echoes the terror that takes hold in the country. After so many years of imprisonment and torture, we are presented, through the voice of a mghassilchi – a Shiite body washer –, with an Iraq shattered by bellicose policies and military colonialism that turns it into a death field. Thus, I work on a description that unfolds from the experience of a foreign reader, translator, and academic of literature – commonly regarded as a corpus of historical, ethnic, as well as anthropological records – that attempts, to some extent, to present it as an artistic body. As an artistic body formed by a craftsman, it requires the translator’s creative ability to bring into the world – and why not give birth to – a body that constitutes itself as a different repetition. Keywords: contemporary Arabic literature; translation studies; Iraqi literature; transnational literature

Kristen mystik. Ur psykologisk synvinkel. Del I

This is the third volume in a serial of books focusing on the concept of mystical death and related ideas, as described within the Christian mystical tradition and its Jewish and Greek roots. In the succeeding chapters these mystical elements and their development are followed up, both within the Western and Eastern Christian traditions. In the final chapters the author presents the German and Dutch mystical schools in the fourteenth century. Using scholarly translations of Christian mystical texts and modern research within the field, the author presents influential Christian mystics in a chronological and thematic way. The study is psychological in the sense that the author gives attention not only to experiential and behavioural aspects but also to the psychology of the mystics themselves. Some fundamental questions are: How is human personality defined by Christian mystics? Which techniques are used in order to reach beyond personality defined as such? What kind of experiences do these exercises lead to? To what end does the mystic pursue these activities? Special attention is given to the phenomenon of mors mystica, the notion that human personality has to die and to be reborn in a transformed state. As to interpretations from the perspective of modern psychology the author draws attention to his earlier studies, related to the psychology of asceticism, visionary experience and descriptions of mystical death. Christian techniques of visualisation are analysed with reference to HansCarl Leuner’s research on guided affective imagery. This psychological interpretation has not been presented in earlier studies of the author

Förvandlande ögonblick. Gudsuppenbarelser i vår tid

This study is based on questionnaires, letters, and short biographies written by 92 ordinary Swedish citizens. Most of them had visions of Jesus or of angels and "divine light". The questionnaires focus on changes concerning religious activity, attitude towards the Bible, concept of God and religious orientation. The author has chosen to describe 35 cases in the form of short biographies (4-6 pages), integrating both quantitative and qualitative data. Since more than 90% of all informants mentioned a crisis prior to the religious vision, the author focuses his study on the relationship between life-crisis and religious vision. The author presents a model of personality, based on ego-psychology, according to which religious visions can be regarded as autosymbolic representations of intrapsychic conflicts. Visions of Jesus, angels, or the divine light, are symbolic representations of order, as against chaos. In almost all cases the vision brings an end to the life-crisis, end chaos, and establishes order
