The article employs the methods of linguistic conceptual analysis to investigate the symbolic meanings of night imagery in the German song lyrics of the music project Lacrimosa, penned by Tilo Wolff. In his interpretation of said meanings, the author cites the world's cultural experience regarding night-related metaphors

Elements of Magical Realism in the Odyssey of Protagonist in Chithra Bannerjee Divakaruni’s THE MISTRESS OF SPICES

Abstract This paper defines magical realism and traces its origin. It states how Chitralekha Banerjee Divakaruni has dexterously employed this literary device in her novel The Mistress of Spices. In Divakaruni’s novels, the opposites co-exist but instead of contradicting, they only complement one another. Her vivid and engaging style strongly supports the character development of the protagonists. The coexistence of magical fantasy and the characteristics of hybrid culture with postcolonial or postmodern novelistic devices in her novels and short stories has often led the author to define her writing approach as magical realism. Circumstances are never very easy in any of Divakaruni’s novels or short stories. Tilo plays many roles and keeps on changing her names to befit her roles. This universalizes the complex problem of identity crisis that the Indians try to cope up with, in a foreign land. She has been changing her name from NayanTara as a daughter to Bhagyavati during her stay with the pirates, then to Tilo, and finally Maya when she finds her love. The name Maya is very interesting to note since it means illusion. One can pause and ask whether Maya is real or another illusion created by the author to enhance the magical suspense in the novel or whether it is the newly found identity of Tilo. The name is noteworthy since the novel has magical elements. The name ?Maya? reinforces the theme. KEY WORDS: Magic realism, identity crisis, hybrid culture, metamorphosis

    THE CLASSIC RULER

The author poses the question: what makes Francois Mitterrand the “classic” type of ruler i.e. what makes him above-the-average contemporary politician. Following the well-documented analysis of the entire period of his rule, the author concludes: history will reveal Mitterrand’s various masks, but never his true face. He exploited the classical mise en scene of power, so his true persona should be sought in the interplay of his numerous disguises. Mitterrand stands out among the contemporary political figures in the ability to use his power to ward off all attempts at its usurpation, thus transforming his own power into the memory of the coming generations

Media Freedom and the “Transition” Era in Mozambique: 1990-2000

In this article the author aims at analysing the evolution of Mozambican journalism, since 1990 (when the new Constitution was approved) until today. The key hypothesis is that Mozambican journalism has been strictly related to Mozambican democracy, and that in 1999-2000 there has been important facts which have determined the option for different avenues from the side of private and public press. After giving a short framework on the political situation in Mozambique, the article focuses its attention on the legal basis of Mozambican media freedom, stressing the limitations that, till today, it continues to register

(ICI2)"This essay examines the processes involved in the establishment of new local radio stations, broadcasting in African languages in the Republic of Benin. One such Station, Radio Rurale Locale Tanguieta, is discussed at length. With reference to this case study the author aim to show the specifically political processes at work in: struggles to appropriate and negotiate management of the community radio project by actors an the local and national scene in Benin today, the impact of the radio broadcasts - as symbolic resources - on local listeners and grass-roots local-level politics, and finally, the potential - and limits - of local radio stations as means of forging a new civic consciousness in the process of democratization promoted by different development agencies and donors. The author begin with an account of the general situation of local broadcasting and of the problems new community radios are facing." (extract

    The case of Radio Maranatha

The author focuses on a Christian broadcaster in Parakou, northern Benin, and analyses its main production structures, its programming, and the actors and their motives involved. It demonstrates how religious media, themselves an assemblage of institutions, actors, significations and infrastructures, participate in consituting the religious domain. Religious culture in Parakou and, more generally, in Benin is not dictated by religious authorities alone: it is made by pastors, lay presenters and their listeners – especially when they participate in interactive radio shows, or join a listeners’ club. Both producers and listeners find new avenues to live their faith. Radio producers and their listeners occupy new spaces to live their faith and gain new media experiences to valorise their skills and knowledge, as well as to experience themselves as part of a larger religious community

Semantic Query Processing: Estimating Relational Purity

    No full text
The use of semantic information found in structured knowledge bases has become an integral part of the processing pipeline of modern intelligent in-formation systems. However, such semantic information is frequently insuffi-cient to capture the rich semantics demanded by the applications, and thus cor-pus-based methods employing natural language processing techniques are often used conjointly to provide additional information. However, the semantic expres-siveness and interaction of these data sources with respect to query processing result quality is often not clear. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the notion of relational purity which represents how well the explicitly modelled relation-ships between two entities in a structured knowledge base capture the implicit (and usually more diverse) semantics found in corpus-based word embeddings. The purity score gives valuable insights into the completeness of a knowledge base, but also into the expected quality of complex semantic queries relying on reasoning over relationships, as for example analogy queries.Web Information System
