Paradoxes and management approaches of competing for work in creative professional service firms

    No full text
Despite their business relevance, creative professional service firms are under-researched, in particular with regard to how they compete for work. Competing for work is key to survival, but also extremely challenging due to the complexity of the services offered. In this paper we use a paradox framework to investigate the opposing demands that creative professional service firms experience when competing for work. Based on a set of semi-structured interviews in the context of architectural competitions, we show that creative professional service firms face two interwoven paradoxes which relate to the strategic intent (why to compete) and the design intent (what to propose) of client propositions. We describe these paradoxes and explain how organizations manage and cope with them through both synthesis and separation management approaches. Contributions of this study can be found in theorizing paradoxes of competing for work from the professional service provider's perspective, and in fostering the firms’ paradoxical mind-set, which facilitates the acceptance and resolution of complexity and different competing demands.Accepted Author ManuscriptPublic Commissionin

<i>Neolindus brachati</i> sp. n., <i>Neolindus luciamans</i> sp. n. <p> <b>Zusammenfassung</b></p> <p> Zwei Arten der Gattung <i>Neolindus</i> Scheerpeltz, 1933 werden beschrieben, abgebildet und von ähnlichen bzw. geographisch nahen Arten unterschieden: <i>N. luciamans</i> sp. n. (Peru: Provinz Huanuco) und <i>N. brachati</i> sp. n. (Venezuela: Provinz Carabobo). <i>Neolindus rudiculus</i> Herman, 1991 wird erstmals seit der Originalbeschreibung nachgewiesen.</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p> The subtribe Cylindroxystina is one of the few Neotropical paederine taxa that have been subject to modern revisions. According to Herman (1991), it comprises two genera and 47 species, <i>Cylindroxystus</i> Bierig, 1943 (14 species) and <i>Neolindus</i> Scheerpeltz, 1933 (33 species). Four additional species of <i>Neolindus</i> were described recently by Asenjo (2011) and Irmler (2011).</p> <p> Both <i>Cylindroxystus</i> and <i>Neolindus</i> have been collected remarkably rarely and in small numbers; numerous species are represented only by single specimens. The revision by Herman (1991) is based on a total of merely 37 (<i>Cylindroxystus</i>) and 79 specimens (<i>Neolindus</i>), respectively. Most of them were found in leaf litter and at lower elevations, but the reproduction habitat is essentially unknown.</p> <p> In material of Staphylinidae collected by Volker Brachat (Geretsried) in Venezuela in 2005 and 2007 and by Günter Riedel (München) in Peru in October 2010, five specimens of <i>Neolindus</i> were discovered, a female of unknown identity (probably undescribed), a female of <i>N. rudiculus</i> Herman, 1991, and three specimens (two males and one female) belonging to two undescribed species from Peru and Venezuela.</p> <p>Material and methods</p> <p>The material treated in this study is deposited in the author´s collection.</p> <p>The morphological studies were conducted using a Stemi SV 11 microscope (Zeiss Germany) and a Jenalab compound microscope (Carl Zeiss Jena). A digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 995) was used for the photographs.</p> <p>Head length was measured from the anterior margin of the frons to the posterior margin of the head, elytral length at the suture from the apex of the scutellum to the posterior margin of the elytra, total length from the anterior margin of the mandibles to the apex of the abdomen, the length of the forebody from the anterior margin of the mandibles to the posterior margin of the elytra, aedeagal length from the apex of the internal structures or from the apex of the dorsal plate (whichever is the longest) to the base of the capsule. The parameral side of the aedeagus (i.e., the side where the sperm duct enters) is referred to as the ventral, the opposite side as the dorsal aspect.</p>Published as part of <i>Volker, A., 2012, Two new species of Neolindus from Peru and Venezuela (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Paederinae: Cylindroxystina), pp. 291-297 in Beiträge Zur Entomologie = Contributions to Entomology 62 (6)</i> on pages 291-292, DOI: 10.21248/contrib.entomol.62.2.291-297, <a href="http://zenodo.org/record/4812846">http://zenodo.org/record/4812846</a&gt

COVID-19 and the Internet: Lessons Learned

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the ‘real’ world and substantially impacted the virtual world and thus the Internet ecosystem. It has caused a significant exogenous shock that offers a wealth of natural experiments and produced new data about broadband, clouds, and the Internet in times of crisis. In this chapter, we characterise and evaluate the evolving impact of the global COVID-19 crisis on traffic patterns and loads and the impact of those on Internet performance from multiple perspectives. While we place a particular focus on deriving insights into how we can better respond to crises and better plan for the post-COVID-19 ‘new normal’, we analyse the impact on and the responses by different actors of the Internet ecosystem across different jurisdictions. With a focus on the USA and Europe, we examine the responses of both public and private actors, with the latter including content and cloud providers, content delivery networks, and Internet service providers (ISPs). This chapter makes two contributions: first, we derive lessons learned for a future post-COVID-19 world to inform non-networking spheres and policy-making; second, the insights gained assist the networking community in better planning for the future.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Cyber Securit

In this paper, we provide some reflections on the development of monetary theory and monetary policy over the last 150 years. Rather than presenting an encompassing overview, which would be overambitious, we simply concentrate on a few selected aspects that we view as milestones in the development of this subject. We also try to illustrate some of the interactions with the political and financial system, academic discussion and the views and actions of central banks

Influence of dead-water zones on the dispersive mass-transport in rivers

The dispersive mass transport in rivers has been investigated to improve the predictability of transport scenarios in case of accidental pollutant spills. In particular, the influence of dead-water zones, as they are given by groin fields, on the transport characteristics in the main stream has been analyzed. A literature review of detailed map material from the rivers Rhine, Waal and Elbe has been performed, in order to plan representative laboratory experiments. Typical aspect ratios of the groin fields as well as typical inclination angles have been summarized. Based on these results, experiments have been performed in a laboratory flume equipped with schematized groins. Within theses experiments the aspect ratio, the inclination angles as well as the groin field volume has been varied. Due to the fact that the flow is very shallow and, therefore, quasi two-dimensional, the flow velocities have been determined at the water surface, using a Surface Particle-Image-Velocimetry-System that has been developed for that purpose. Additional measurements, using a two-dimensional Laser-Doppler-Velocimeter, have been performed for resolving the velocity distribution over the water depth. With the help of these measurements it was possible to determine the typical recirculating flows in the groin fields as well as the coherent, horizontal eddies in the mixing layer between dead-water zone and main stream, that are governing the mass exchange. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the surface PIV measurements made it possible to estimate also the mass exchange between groin field and main stream. With the help of Planar-Concentration-Analysis, which is a method for determining depth-averaged planar concentration fields, it could be shown that the mass exchange between groin field and main stream increases with increasing length of the groin field. For these measurements a tracer injection device has been developed, that consists of a movable multi-port injection-box and vacuum-pressure-unit, which is able to produce instantaneously, homogeneous and reproducible concentration fields. Finally a Lagrangian-Particle-Tracking-Method was developed to transfer the results, obtained locally at single groin fields, into the overall transport characteristics in the far-field of pollutant spill scenario for a river system consisting of a series of groin fields. Through the implementation of a transient-adhesion-boundary, it was possible to parameterize the influence of groin fields on the longitudinal dispersion, the transport velocity and the skewness of the concentration distribution in the case of a pollutant spill
