Is the Reagan defense buildup over? : an interview with Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger
No full textIn the four and a half years previous to this interview, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, under the Reagan administration, presided over the largest peacetime military expansion in American history. 1985 was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union, with an economic growth rate close to zero. Newly elected president Mikhail Gorbachev was not only burdened with the task of revitalizing the economic system, but with keeping up the arms race. The United States was also combating a recession and growing deficit, contributing to a mounting concern that the unprecedented defense spending must be curbed. Weinberger combats Congress’ urge to cut funding by explaining how increased defense spending in fact helps the economy, and that a robust defense is the best way to prevent catastrophic risks to peace and freedom. No full textOta Weinberger se narodil 20. dubna 1919 v Brně do vzdělané, dobře situované, neortodoxní židovské rodiny, která i po rozpadu rakousko-uherské monarchie nezpřetrhala vazby s německou kulturou a německým jazykem. Toto rodinné zázemí mělo rozhodující vliv na jeho životní dráhu. Krátce po absolvování gymnázia a zahájení studia na Právnické fakultě v Brně obsadil tehdejší Československo Hitler. Podobně jako jiní Židé, byla i jeho rodina pronásledována. Čtyři roky svého života strávil v různých koncentračních táborech, mezi jiným i v Osvětimi. Po válce dokončil právnickou fakultu a nastoupil do soudní praxe. Po druhé světové válce se však Československá republika dostala do područí další, komunistické totalitní diktatury. Weinberger odmítl vstoupit do komunistické strany, důsledkem čeho byl zproštěn soudní služby a byl zaměstnán jako zámečník

Weinberger Inequality, which states that the fundamental ratio, λ2/λ1, as a function of a domain

n is maximized by the n-ball. We consider the Polygonal Payne–P´olya–Weinberger Conjecture,
which states that among planar k-polygons, the regular k-polygon maximizes λ2/λ1. We show that
among the class of triangles, λ2/λ1 is uniquely maximized by the equilateral triangle, and that
among quadrilaterals λ2/λ1 is uniquely maximized by the square. To do so, we use perturbative
techniques to establish local maximality together with a continuity estimate to reduce the problem
to finitely many computations accomplished by a computer. This provides an alternative proof of
the k = 3 case, a proof for the convex k = 4 case, and the sketch of a proof for the non-convex k = 4
case

No full textPeter Weinberger is Assistant Professor at TU Wien in the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry. He holds the venia docendi in Inorganic Chemistry and is the leader of the research group on Magneto- and Thermochemistry. His main research area in magnetochemistry is the iron(II) coordination chemistry of spin-crossover complexes. In the field of thermochemistry he is working on thermochemical energy storage materials for industrial waste heat storage or in combination with concentrated solar power plants.
Since many years he is member and currently first representative of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry in the Working Group on Equal Opportunities of TU Wien (Arbeitskreis für Gleichbehandlungsfragen, AKG. He was member of the Steering Group "Diversity Management" at TU Wien and acts as scientific referee of the research grant awarded by the AGPro (Austrian Gay Professionals)
