Full text linkUlrike Weigelt, Jahrgang 1949, stammt aus Dresden und wohnt schon seit geraumer Zeit gemeinsam mit ihren beiden Lebensgefährten, einem Mann und dem Hund Findus, in Pirna, dem Tor zur Sächsischen Schweiz. Von klein auf wuchs sie mit Tieren aller Art auf. Nach knapp neun gemeinsamen Jahren mit Findus erlag sie dem Bedürfnis, seine Missetaten, aber auch seine liebenswerte Art allen interessierten Tierfreunden zugänglich zu machen und der Nachwelt zu erhalten

Full text linkIm vergangenen Jahrzehnt hat sich das Studium der Ethnologie gravierend verändert. Anstelle von Magister und Diplomstudiengänge wurden der Bachelor und der Master Studiengang eingeführt. Das geschah vor allem vor dem Hintergrund der Bologna-Reform, die auf eine europaweite Harmonisierung von Studiengängen und -abschlüssen sowie auf internationale Mobilität der Studierenden zielt. Der Bologna-Prozess verfolgt dabei drei Hauptziele: Die Förderung von Mobilität, von internationaler Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und von Beschäftigungsfähigkeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellen sich in Bezug auf Letzteres u.a. Fragen nach der Berufsorientierung innerhalb ethnologischer Studiengänge. Was könnte da mehr von Interesse sein als die individuelle Berufsplanung von Studierenden, die sich in diesem System bewegen. Das folgende Interview zielt dabei auf eine exemplarische Besprechung dieses Thema zwischen Frank André Weigelt, als Fachstudienberatung am Institut für Ethnologie der Universität Hamburg und Frau Laura Kingston als Studierende im Studiengang BAEthnologie an derselben Universität
The macroecology of island floras
Full text linkIslands are key model systems in biogeography and ecology. However, standardized data on environmental characteristics of the large number of islands worldwide have so far been lacking, and the effects of these characteristics on island ecology and biodiversity remain insufficiently understood. In my PhD thesis, I presented the first comprehensive environmental characterization of the world’s islands, covering past and present bioclimatic and physical island characteristics (including the spatial setting of islands and archipelagos). I used these data to investigate how island characteristics influence the diversity and assembly of island floras at different spatial scales and across major plant groups. To this end, I assembled a global database of vascular plant species composition including 45,000 species and covering 1,070 islands. I showed that different aspects of island environments affect different facets of insular diversity (species richness, turnover, phylogenetic diversity) across scales and major plant groups, in accordance with their predominant dispersal- and speciation-related traits and adaptations to climate. The results contribute to a better understanding of the environmental and evolutionary drivers of plant assemblage composition, on islands as well as on mainlands.</p

Bewährungsstrafen. Sie widmet sich damit einem Kernstück des modernen Strafrechts. Auf der Grundlage von Datensätzen aus dem Bundeszentral- und Erziehungsregister werden rund 120.000 zu aussetzungsfähigen Freiheits- oder Jugendstrafen Verurteilte aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet hinsichtlich ihrer konkreten Sanktionierung im Bezugsjahr und einer etwaigen erneuten Straffälligkeit in einem vierjährigen Folgezeitraum untersucht. Besonderheiten hinsichtlich des Alters, des Geschlechts, der Nationalität und der im Register abgebildeten strafrechtlichen Vorgeschichte der Täter werden analysiert, ebenso eine etwaige Unterstellung unter Bewährungshilfe. Vortaten, Bezugstaten und Rückfalltaten werden delikts- und sanktionsspezifisch ausgewertet. Auch nach etwaigen Zusammenhängen zwischen Rückfall und Widerruf der StrafaussetzunThis research/analysis focuses on an empirical analysis of the practical criminal law and the success of suspended sentence. The foundation of the research form data sets from the Bundeszentralregister and the Erziehungsregister. About 120.000 German data sets of stayed prison sentences and stayed young offender sentences are analyzed under the following aspects: the sentence received and if the delinquent reoffends in a period of four years after their sanction. Characteristics of age, gender, nationality and perhaps an existing penal background as well as possible probation service are part of the analysis. Also discussed are connections between relapse and the revocation of the parole. Another chapter deals with the success of the suspended sentences compared to other penalties, i.e. fines and prison sentences up to two years
Unexpected Ionization Structure in Eta Carinae's "Weigelt Knots"
Full text linkThe Weigelt knots, dense slow-moving ejecta near η Carinae, are mysterious in structure as well as in origin. Using spatially dithered spectrograms obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS), we have partially resolved the ionization zones of one knot. Contrary to simple models, higher ionization levels occur on the outer side, i.e., farther from the star. They cannot represent a bow shock, and no satisfying explanation is yet available—though we sketch one qualitative possibility. STIS spectrograms provide far more reliable spatial measurements of the Weigelt knots than HST images do, and this technique can also be applied to the knots' proper motion problem. Our spatial measurement accuracy is about 10 mas, corresponding to a projected linear scale of the order of 30 AU, which is appreciably smaller than the size of each Weigelt knot
