    A preliminary look at personality analysis as a coaching strategy / Wee Eng Hoe and Tan Chee Hian

    This paper explores the need to understand athletes’ personalities in ensuring favourable coaching outcomes. Successful coaching cannot be judged based solely on winning or losing but also based on the development of athletes. As such, the process of coaching must be changed to involve the learning of athletes’ personality types. No two athletes are the same but many have similar characteristics. The understanding of personality would enable coaches to cater their approaches to athletes accordingly and achieve positive outcomes without enduring unnecessary stress. Although some researchers have found contradictions and difficulties in personality research based on sports due to the different methodologies used, this paper will embark on two approaches to explore the issue. The approaches are the review of literature on personality types and the presentation of the findings of local studies based on different personality models. Specifically, the review will include behaviour characteristics of athletes, personality traits of athletes from individual and team sports, athletes’ personalities from different types of sports, personality and ability to learn motor skills, personality differences between contact and non-contact sports and personality differences with different body types. The local studies will focus on Sanguine-Choleric- Melancholic and Phlegmatic Model (SCMP) and The Big-Five Model. Based on the findings, strategies will be suggested for coaches to address the difficulties faced in coaching athletes with diverse personality

    Attitude toward physical activity: an investigation of sports science students in Malaysian public universities / Kee Kang Mea and Wee Eng Hoe

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude of sports science undergraduates toward physical activity and the six perceived meaning of physical activity. The study employed the Kenyon ATPA instrument to determine the attitude toward physical activity of the respondents. A total of 639 sports science and physical education undergraduates from the six public universities completed the questionnaires. The findings of this study showed that there were significant differences in the overall attitude and the six perceived meaning toward physical activity of Malaysian public universities sports science students based on gender except for the Aesthetic and the Catharsis sub-domains. However, there was no significant difference in their overall attitude toward physical activity by their age and ethnic groups. In conclusion, the sports science or physical education major students differ in term of their overall attitude toward physical activity and perceived meaning of physical activity based on gender. Females are more inclined to participate in physical activity for health and fitness purposes besides for socialization experience whereas the males are more likely to participate in physical activity as a way to release tension and aggression besides for socialisation. Hence gender is an important factor in determining the type of physical activity programs to organise for college students. The results of this study also indicate that enrolling in sport science courses may help to generate positive impact on attitude toward physical activity

    Sources of organizational stress among athletes in the Malaysian public universities / Wee Eng Hoe … [et al.]

    This study is to assess organizational stress among athletes in the Malaysian Public Universities. Specifically, it is to assess organizational stress among athletes competing in sports programmes (Intra-varsity sports programme, Inter-varsity sports competition, Interstates sports competition & International sports competition). The Organizational Stress Inventory (OSI) questionnaire was adopted and adapted from research done by Fletcher and Hanton (2003). The inventory is divided into three categories: personal issues (16 statements), leadership issues (21 statements), and environmental issues (45 statements). A total of 273 student athletes were surveyed. The findings are as follows: a) The three sub-domains were ranked first (personal issues), second (environmental issues) and third (leadership issues) for the respondents of the whole sample, males and females respondents. b) The unweighted mean scores showed that organizational stress were dominant for 'Personal Issues' and 'Environmental Issues' for all the respondents. c) For the 'Personal Issue' domain, the sub-domains of 'nutrition', 'injury' and 'goal & expectation' were ranked in order of importance respectively. Similar ranking applied to both male and female athletes. Similar ranking applied individually to male and female athletes. d) For the 'Leadership Issues', 'Coaching Styles' was ranked first, followed by 'Coach' subdomain. However, both the sub-domains were not dominant. e) For the 'Environmental Issues' the first three main sub-domains were 'finances', 'selection' and accommodation during competition'. f) For male athletes (N=160), the three sub-domains were ranked first (personal issues), second (environmental issues) and third (leadership issues). g) For female athletes (N=113), the three sub-domains were ranked first (personal issues), second (environmental issues) and third (leadership issues). h) There was no significant difference in organizational stress among athletes according to gender, i) There was no significant difference in organizational stress among athletes according to age groups. However, there was statistically significant difference in 'goal & expectation' sub-domain based on age groups, j) There was no significant difference in organizational stress among athletes according to category of sports, k) There was no significant difference in organizational stress among athletes according to level of involvement. 1) There was significant difference in 'finances' sub-domain of the 'Environmental Issues'. Zone level athletes (mean=20.10) were more stressed as compared to college level athletes (mean=13.69). The findings have significant implications for coaches and sport programme directors. Based on the findings of this study, additional research is needed and the following suggestions are considered important. Since the sample of this study is confined to public university athletes, similar study should be conducted on other groups of student from private educational institutions. As only about 5.5% of national athletes were involved in this study, a follow-up study is recommended to concentrate on national athletes and to compare stress among other national teams

    This study examined the effect of 4-week plyometric training programme on the jumping performance of undergraduate male basketball players. A total of 20 basketball players from the inter-faculty game at a public university were selected to participate in this study. The subjects were aged 20-23 years (mean = 21.3 + 1.12). Convenience sampling was used to select the students and subsequently randomly assigned to the control (n=10) and experimental (n=10) groups. Both groups were trained according to the compulsory training programme three times a week for four weeks. Additional plyometric training was provided to the experimental group, twice a week on non training days. The Vertec equipment (VER Vertec Jump Trainer) was used to measure the vertical jumping ability of the subjects. Control and experimental groups showed significant improvement in the mean vertical jump scores during the post-test as compared with the pre-test (t= -2.45; p < 0.05; and t=-21.00; p<0.05 respectively). Experimental group exhibited greater improvement (11.17%) as compared to the control group (2.12%). In short, plyometric training improved the jumping performance of basketball players and it is recommended to be used as a training strategy in improving jumping performance not only in basketball but in other sport as well

    Evaluating KBSM forms four and five sports science in secondary schools in Malaysia / Wee Eng Hoe, Kee Kang Mea and Nadiah Diyana Tan Abdullah

    This study was designed to evaluate the implementation of the Form 4 and 5 Sports Science Curriculum in the Malaysian schools. A questionnaire which was formulated by the researchers was administered to 94 Sports Science teachers in Malaysia. Majority of the Sports Science teachers were males and were below 40 years of age. Majority were trained in Sports Science and Physical Education. About half of the teachers were teaching between 5-14 years and majority taught 4-8 periods of Sport Science per week. Majority of the teachers have attended Sports Science related courses, Physical Education related courses and sports related courses. However only about 70% of the Sports Science teachers had attended Sports Science Orientation Course. Inadequate facilities is considered to be a very serious problem. Sports Science teachers felt that financial allocation is inadequate, teaching aids are scarce, reference books are inadequate and emphasized that they need a Sports Science text book and teachers' guide book. In term of teaching, male teachers and teachers with 3 years Sports Science experience are more capable in managing students and in conducting activities/experiments. However, they agreed that administrators consulted them before assigning them to teach but they failed to discuss factors affecting the teaching and learning of Sports Science. For further research, it is recommended that perceptions of students on Sports Science subject and its implementation should be undertaken

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
