The belly dancing as a multicultural phenomenon
This thesis deals with belly dancing as a multicultural phenomenon. The autor chose this subject for different reasons. Firstly, the very nature of belly dancing asks for which falos for multidisciplinarity, which is the main idea of cultural antropology. Secondly, she practices belly dancing herself. This fact helps her understand belly dancing more properly even on the theoretical level. Moreover, the author could study this phenomenon because she attends courses and has become a part of the newly emerged Czech belly dancing subculture. The third and last reason why she picks up this phenomenon was a fact that she had studied at an artistic secondary school. Thats why she does not only study the subject from the perspective of humanities (studied at FFUK) but she also tries to apply the artistic point of view. Thus the dance is not viwed only as an artwork, but strong inspiration for artists as well
Performance of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in pork shoulder as a predictor for pork belly softness
Pork belly quality indicators are economically relevant in the pork industry. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of the pork shoulder outer subcutaneous fat layer, belly flop angle and subjective softness scores of the pork belly were measured (n=144) to determine the accuracy of pork shoulder NIR spectroscopy as a predictor of pork belly softness. The NIR spectra hot carcass estimates explained over 80.0% variability in pork belly softness (80.5–90.8%), with low prediction error, suggesting that NIR spectroscopy measured in the pork shoulder is an efficient and accurate indicator of pork belly softness to classify pork bellies for specific market demandsThe presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. The Belly Dancer Project: A Phenomenological Study of Gendered Identity through Documentary Filmmaking
abstract: In this study, the researcher develops a documentary-driven methodology to understand the ways four women in the United States use their involvement in the belly dance phenomenon to shape their ongoing individual identity development. The filmmaking process itself and its efficacy as a process to promote self-understanding and identity growth among the participating belly dancers, are also investigated phenomenologically. Methodological steps taken in the documentary-driven methodology include: initial filmed interviews, co-produced filmed dance performances, editorial interviews to review footage with each dancer, documentary film production, dancer-led focus groups to screen the film, and exit interviews with each dancer. The project generates new understandings about the ways women use belly dance to shape their individual identities to include: finding community with other women in private women's spaces, embodying the music through the dance movements, and finding liberation from their everyday "selves" through costume and performance.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Anthropology 201
Lust, Hunger, and Class in Émile Zola’s \u3cem\u3eThe Belly of Paris\u3c/em\u3e
Emile Zola’s nineteenth-century novel The Belly of Paris gives a rich commentary on the relationships between people, using food as a medium to illustrate socioeconomic values and gender dynamics. In this paper, I will closely examine how Zola breaks his characters into two groups, les maigres (the Thins) and les gras (the Fats), whose socioeconomic differences and political views are also reflected in the foods with which the author associates them. This also plays into how Les Halles, the marketplace which is also the eponymous setting of the novel, is illustrated as a belly in which the characters may be consumed in order to uphold the status quo or be expelled as revolutionaries
“Tuck in Yuh Belly”: Imperatives of Female Slenderness in Jamaican Dancehall Music
Reggae songs such as Clancy Eccles\u27s (2010) “Fatty, Fatty” and Buju Banton\u27s (2000) “Di Woman Dem Phat” have traditionally celebrated the fat, black woman\u27s body as an agent of desire. However, some more recent discourses such as Left Side and Esco\u27s (2005) “Tuck in Yuh Belly” suggest an impending reversal of this celebration of fleshiness. The author explores representations of female fatness in masculine discourses from the Jamaican dancehall music arena, specifically those discourses that pathologize fat and suggest the preferred desirability of slenderness
Sand movement by wind
Sand movement on the coast by wind action can be a major factor in some areas, yet very little is known about the basic mechanisms of movement by wind. With the growing use of artificial placement of sand material for beach restoration and protection, movement of sand by wind in the area shoreward of the waterline has become more and more a matter of concern. The need for greater knowledge in this area has recently been emphasized by proposed plans for the rehabilitation of vast offshore sand island areas along the eastern seaboard. This report discusses some earlier experimental results in wind tunnels, and describes and compares results obtained from new wind tunnel tests. Work by another investigator, directly related to the author's work, has been included in an addendum. This latter work extends the investigation to smaller sand size range and suggests that different relationships for threshold shear velocity for sand movement obtain for the smaller sand size distributions. Of particular interest are tests on the influence of moisture content on sand movement. The experimental date clearly demonstrate that as the sand moisture content increases, the value of the threshold shear velocity of sand movement may also materially increase. Quantitative expression of this effect is obtained
Re-crafting the culture: Crafting the gender statements through circumcision and belly dancer dresses
Hocaoğlu, Dilek (Dogus Author)Craft often carries an ideology suggesting a particular look. Craft is not simply about making, but about making political statement since the Industrial Revolution. It is often perceived inferior to art with its sensual, skill based, pastoral qualities used to introduce amateur forms. Although craft is taken to mean an object having a high degree of handmade input, it does not necessarily require being produced or designed using traditional materials, produced as a one-off or as part of a small batch. The culture’s unification with market and consumption in Turkey brought certain changes and resulted in a struggle between signs in the domain of craft and production. Much of the craft work has followed social, cultural and ideological stereotypes exploring the relationship between gender and national identity. The craft tradition which has a rooted past in Turkey is abundantly fed from these cultural meanings. The paper aims to investigate the projections of social changes on Turkish craft tradition through circumcision and belly dancer costumes for children. Circumcision is a rite of passage in which the boy is dressed in embroidered caftans with a crown-like cap and a baton. The boy becomes an Ottoman prince (shahzadah) with belt of “maşallah” worn to avert the evil eye. On the other hand, the belly dancer costumes turn into a souvenir item produced for children and sold in touristic sites. Since commoditization changes the meaning of cultural products, craftwork and local culture is often destroyed by the treatment of it as a touristic attraction. In the case of belly dancer costumes, the handcrafted item transforms into an item of orientalist gender manifestation decorated to look authentic for children. Within the framework of the study, the gender codes and orientalist statements will be elaborated with the transformation and production of the craftwork on these costumes with the observations and interviews conducted with the producers and retailers
Somatic techniques as a teaching strategy in online belly dance classes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This undergraduate thesis aims to present and discuss a methodological proposal for non formal online Belly Dance instruction developed by the author in 2020. This proposal emerged amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, in response to the imperative to adapt Belly Dance classes to remote instruction. Within this framework, the work seeks to reflect on the significance of somatic techniques, with a particular focus on Self-Image work from Moshe Feldenkrais's perspective (1977), as a pedagogical strategy in online Belly Dance education. Its specific objectives are to delineate the author's adaptations as a dance instructor during the COVID-19 pandemic, elucidate and correlate the historical significance of the audiovisual system in the pedagogical trajectory of Arab dances in Brazil, expound upon how self-image exercises fostered autonomy for students during Belly Dance classes, and scrutinize and reflect upon the teaching methodology devised by the author and its efficacy in facilitating student learning. The work furnishes insights into the teaching and learning of dance, particularly Belly Dance, and its applicability to the remote education paradigm, with the aim of addressing the exigencies and challenges of online instruction, whilst underscoring the importance of somatic techniques and their indispensable role in the professional development of dancers. This research was conducted utilizing a qualitative approach, employing the autobiographical method to systematize the devised methodology
and students' testimonials for outcome analysis. We conclude that somatic techniques augment bodily awareness, notwithstanding the virtual nature of the medium. Additionally, we assert that enhanced self-image streamlines the facilitation of dance instruction by the teacher-mediator, endowing students with autonomy and honoring their individuality.
