Analyzing the boundary conditions of the innovative technique of agitation dredging, the Tiamat
Sedimentation is a common issue in navigating through channels, berths and anchorages of many ports and harbors. In order to address this issue, maintenance dredging can be done in three different ways; relocating of the sediments, keeping the sediments in place, or dredging with nature and using the natural currents to remove sediment. Trailing Suction Hopper Dredging (TSHD) is currently the preferred method for dredging and relocating sediment, however, this method is both costly and time-consuming. As a result, more nature-based solutions are becoming attractive, like the Water Injection Dredger (WID). The Underwater Plough (UWP) is another commonly used method usually for dealing with irregularities in the seabed. Harwich Haven Authority has recently developed a new dredging technique called the Tiamat, this is a new agitation dredging method and a potential environmentally friendly solution. The Tiamat employs a water injection technique to dredge sediment from the seabed. The system injects water into the seabed to fluidize the sediments and then uses a suction pump to bring the sediment plume higher in the water column, such that it can be carried away by the natural currents. To ascertain the boundary conditions for the Tiamat, tests were conducted at three locations in the Port of Rotterdam, each with different sediment classifications (cohesive and non-cohesive), current strengths (high and low), and depths. Because the Tiamat was developed by the Harwich Haven Authority, it was expected that the Tiamat would perform optimally in areas with strong currents and cohesive sediment at moderate depths. In order to evaluate the performance of the Tiamat, two other dredging techniques - WID and UWP - were tested alongside the Tiamat in these areas. The results of the pilots and monitoring indicated that the boundary conditions for the Tiamat are primarily influenced by the depth, currents, and sediment characteristics. The depth is limited by the length of the discharge pipe. The Tiamat has the highest production rate in cohesive sediments, as production rates tend to be lower in coarser sand sediments due to their higher tendency to settle. For non-cohesive sediments, a highly energetic river with strong currents is necessary to achieve a certain sediment transport distance. In order to estimate the performance of the Tiamat, the dredging technique is compared with the WID and UWP. Different parameters such as turbidity, sediment transport, development of the top sediment layer, depth limitations, the production rate in different grain sizes, fuel consumption and costs are compared and discussed.Civil Engineering | Hydraulic Engineering | Coastal Engineerin
Paws and reflect:Defining an assistance dog task
Definitions of assistance dogs rest on the performance of tasks that mitigate a human’s disabilities. However, the specific elements that constitute assistance dog tasks – those that effectively and consistently mitigate disabilities – remain undefined. As the assistance dog concept expands into new domains, the lack of a clear definition for an assistance dog task poses significant challenges for multispecies stakeholders. Based on the author’s professional experience educating and assessing assistance dog teams, as well as exchanges from a workshop with assistance dog professionals and individuals living with qualified assistance dogs, this article proposes nine criteria to address the question: what needs to be established to define an assistance dog task that considers the well-being, welfare, and working success of dog and human? The aim is for this definition to act as i) a guideline to further refine the assistance dog concept, ii) a resource for assistance dog professionals and their clients when developing a novel task, and iii) a framework for stakeholders to assess an individual’s need for an assistance dog task. In so doing, it situates assistance dog tasks as interdependent, caring acts on behalf of both dog and human that have been designed with the interests, well-being, and welfare of both at the forefront. Ultimately, this paper was written with an intention to support meaningful change within the assistance dog sector that can benefit assistance dogs, humans, the public, and further stakeholders
Interspecies emotion management: The importance of distinguishing between emotion work and emotional labour
This paper presents the importance of the informed and nuanced distinction and use of the terms “emotion work” and “emotional labour” when referring to interspecies work. When emotional labour is acknowledged as a professional skill across species, two realities can be recognised and therefore acted upon. Firstly, it clarifies that emotional labour is performed by workers with formal jobs during working hours. By extension, the second reality arises, that emotional labour is a professional skill requiring preparation, education, and ongoing support. Using the terms emotion work and emotional labour muddies and weakens this argument. This paper rests at the intersection of emotion management and animal labour studies, two fields that have thus far predominantly run parallel, despite a critical need for their interdisciplinary engagement

“Same old ding dong”: The impact of the initial lockdown in 2020 on Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind
Ireland found itself in a lockdown to combat the international spread of the SAR-CoV-2 virus beginning in March of 2020. This paper presents the initial impact that the initial lockdown and accompanying social distancing measures had on Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB). Twenty-eight interviews were conducted with twenty-six interlocutors, including IGDB staff and clients, professionals within the guide dog sector, and locals to Cork City, Ireland. Findings show that lockdown measures impacted the education and work-lives of the guide dogs and instructors. Guide dogs lived in temporary homes rather than in the center’s kennels, which seems to improve their relaxation and education. Although the instructors may have benefitted from working outdoors with canines, they encountered challenges while teaching clients and guide dogs. They also needed to motivate the canines more to find a purpose in their work which had come to feel like the “same old ding dong”, with most destinations closed. The clients, especially those who experienced their first class during 2020, felt the loss of connection and support offered in the group class pre-pandemic. Despite these obstacles, interlocutors managed these obstacles well and looked optimistically toward the future
Carnivalesque elements in the novel of Tiamat
Mihail Bahktin’in karnavalesk kuramı edebi eserleri anlama ve çözümleme noktasında oldukça

analyzing literary works. In carnivals, which can be described as a freedom movement against the
restrictive and pacifying structures of authorities, social norms and dogmas; With laughter, all borders are
crossed, prohibitions are violated, ranks and authorities are crowned. Extreme and exaggerated behaviors,
discourses and norms are suspended. Carnivals are a utopiawhere people realize their wishes and instincts
in their lives shaped by various pressures and rules. Starting from this structure of carnivals, Bahktin; He
calls the carnivalization of literature when norms and rules are violated in literature, opposition to
authority and dogma is taken, humor and seriousness disappear, and the appearance of contradictory and
scandalous situations. Ihsan Oktay Anar's novel Tiamat, which we can define as a postmodern novel,
appears as a work in which literature is carnivalized with its different and contradictory novel structure by
breaking the whole structure of the modern novel. The author carnivalized literature with grotesque
depictions, ambivalents, insults, scandals, laughter and feast images. In this study, it is aimed to analyze
the novel Tiamat in the context of carnivalesque theor
Assistance Dogs:Care and Interdependence
Assistance dogs are purpose-bred canines performing specific tasks for people with disabilities. They go through months of extensive training starting in puppyhood, preparing them for the particular tasks they are needed for and the interspecies communication they require. Even though dogs provide various forms of care and support to people with disabilities and this capacity is an essential part of dog breeding, hardly any work has been done on the intersections of critical animal studies and disability studies. Indeed, it might seem hard to reconcile the emphasis on reclaiming humanity prevalent in disability studies and the critique of human exceptionalism in critical animal studies. The workshop will use the focus on assistance dogs as co-producers of relationships and companionship with people with disabilities to contribute to political debates about animal welfare, disability justice, while raising new questions about feminist and disability critiques of care, vulnerability, relational autonomy, and independence
Defining Terms Used for Animals Working in Support Roles for People with Support Needs
The nomenclature used to describe animals working in roles supporting people can be confusing. The same term may be used to describe different roles, or two terms may mean the same thing. This confusion is evident among researchers, practitioners, and end users. Because certain animal roles are provided with legal protections and/or government-funding support in some jurisdictions, it is necessary to clearly define the existing terms to avoid confusion. The aim of this paper is to provide operationalized definitions for nine terms, which would be useful in many world regions: “assistance animal”, “companion animal”, “educational/school support animal”, “emotional support animal”, “facility animal”, “service animal”, “skilled companion animal”, “therapy animal”, and “visiting/visitation animal”. At the International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ) conferences in 2018 and 2020, over 100 delegates participated in workshops to define these terms, many of whom co-authored this paper. Through an iterative process, we have defined the nine terms and explained how they differ from each other. We recommend phasing out two terms (i.e., “skilled companion animal” and “service animal”) due to overlap with other terms that could potentially exacerbate confusion. The implications for several regions of the world are discussed
