THESIS ABSTRACT TRANSIENT LIQUID PHASE JOINING OF CARBON AND STAINLESS STEELS TO ALUMINUM ALLOY USING GALLIUM METAL BY Yuke Wang B.S. Chongqing University of Technology, Chongqing, China 2011 The objectives of this thesis is to develop a metallurgical understanding of joining two dissimilar metals via transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding. TLP Joining of 1020 carbon steel and 304L stainless steel to 6061-T6 Aluminum (Al) alloy were carried out using gallium (Ga) as filler metal. Joints were fabricated using different bonding temperatures and holding times. The microstructures for each sample were examined via optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tensile tests were performed for representative samples from each bonding system. Micro-hardness profile across the bonding region for each sample was also obtained. Sound joints were obtained. The brittle Fe2Al5 intermetallic compound was identified in the midst of reaction layers of the 1020 steel/Ga/6061-Al joints. The sample processed at 450oC for four hours showed the highest tensile strength of 81.0 MPa. On the other hand, no brittle intermetallic compound was identified at the bonding regions of the 304L Stainless Steel/Ga/6061-Al joints, The highest tensile strength of 100.0 MPa were measured for the samples fabricated at 330oC for six hours. It was determined that the Ga film promotes the formation of the narrow transient liquid layer that aided in the isothermal local solidification, and enhanced the inter-diffusion of the iron and aluminum atoms. The weakening of mechanical properties on 6061-Al observed from both systems is due to overaging and the embrittlement caused by excessive amount of Ga that segregated into the Al

We scrape 6,735 pages that interleave text, images, tables, and diagrams. To preserve the layout information, we also save the screenshots of entire pages and extract bounding boxes of the visual elements. Estimating seroconversion rates accounting for repeated infections by approximate Bayesian computation

    No full text
This study presents a novel approach for inferring the incidence of infections by employing a quantitative model of the serum antibody response. Current methodologies often overlook the cumulative effect of an individual's infection history, making it challenging to obtain a marginal distribution for antibody concentrations. Our proposed approach leverages approximate Bayesian computation to simulate cross-sectional antibody responses and compare these to observed data, factoring in the impact of repeated infections. We then assess the empirical distribution functions of the simulated and observed antibody data utilizing Kolmogorov deviance, thereby incorporating a goodness-of-fit check. This new method not only matches the computational efficiency of preceding likelihood-based analyses but also facilitates the joint estimation of antibody noise parameters. The results affirm that the predictions generated by our within-host model closely align with the observed distributions from cross-sectional samples of a well-characterized population. Our findings mirror those of likelihood-based methodologies in scenarios of low infection pressure, such as the transmission of pertussis in Europe. However, our simulations reveal that in settings of higher infection pressure, likelihood-based approaches tend to underestimate the force of infection. Thus, our novel methodology presents significant advancements in estimating infection incidence, thereby enhancing our understanding of disease dynamics in the field of epidemiology

Chibiraga yukei Ji & Wang sp. nov. (Figs. 4, 8, 13, 14) Type material. Holotype: Male, 9-VII-2016, Tuanjie Village, Caoke Town, Shimian County, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, altitude 302 m, leg. Shuqin Ji and Yuke Han, SCAU. Diagnosis. Externally the species is distinguished from its congeners by the inward-crescent black spot in the base of forewing near the dorsal margin, Rs and M 1 in hindwing venation are not stalked, and the ground color of both forewing and hindwing is generally deeper than in the other two species. The male genitalia are similar to C. houshuaii sp. nov., as both species have a mushroom-shaped socii and bifid valve, but male genitalia of C. yukei sp. nov. can be distinguished by the following characteristics: (1) base of socii thinner; apex of subuncus rounder and larger; (2) the paired branches of gnathos slender apically; (3) ventral part of the valve with a concave notch on the tip and elongate with slightly folded oval process; and (4) aedeagus slightly curved from the base to the apex, and the distal tip gradually attenuates, rather than abruptly pinched as in C. houshuaii. Description. Forewing length 10 mm (n=1). Head, thorax, and abdomen covered with chocolate to blackish scales. Antenna stem red brown, with pale brown rami. Male antenna bipectinate, gradually tapering at the tip. Labial palpus short, close to vertex, 1 st segment curved upward, dark brown; 2nd segment bent at a right angle from the 1st, stout and relatively long, almost three times as long as that in the 1st, dark brown; 3rd oval, yellowish. Forewing red brown to dark brown in basal two-thirds and pale chocolate in outer one-third. Reddish scales present at costa and wing base in basal two-thirds; white scales form an obscure band extending from costa to vein CuA 2 in outer one-third. Fringes yellowish brown. A black postdiscal fascia runs straight from the costa to vein CuA1, turning prominently inward and extending at an anal angle. Black scales concentrate in space 1A+2A, Cup, CuA2, discocellular vein, and center of the cell, and form a prominent inward-crescent black spot. Hindwing generally reddish brown; black, grown scales scattered in basal half and concentrated at the anal angle. Apart from Rs and M 1 in hindwing, venation is not stalked; venation (Figs. 13, 14) is virtually identical to C. houshuaii sp. nov. and C. banghaasi. Male genitalia (Fig. 8). Uncus absent, socii large, fleshy, mushroom-shaped, with many setae; subuncus peaked cap-liked, with dense setae. Gnathos consists of two branches, paired branches slender apically and connected to each other by a wide medial bridge. Tegumen broad and relatively short. Valvae deeply concave in the middle, dorsal part of the valvae oval, with setae at the tip, base of dorsal part with a peculiar process covered with setae; ventral part of the valvae elongate with slightly folded oval process, bearing a process in the apex, and possessing setae from tip to base. Juxta upper part with one bow process, bottom with two triangular and one semicircular processes. Saccus simple, V-shaped. Aedeagus slightly curved from the base to the apex, distal tip gradually attenuates. Distribution. China (Sichuan). Etymology. The new species is named after Mr. Yuke Han (SCAU), one of the collectors of the type specimen.Published as part of Ji, Shuqin, Huang, Siyao, Ma, Lijun & Wang, Min, 2018, Two new species of the genus Chibiraga Matsumura, 1931 (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae) from China, pp. 165-172 in Zootaxa 4429 (1) on pages 170-171, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4429.1.9, http://zenodo.org/record/128096
