Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture
Full text linkThis thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry
Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
Full text linkThis thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title

No full textThe new technology that is making an inroad to the teaching and research domain can be a boon to the teaching learning community. Wi-Fi for instance has a tremendous contribution in the way students connect and access information. This paper looks into the level of Wi-Fi awareness and the problems faced by the student community in the campus and their level of competence. The study involved a questionnaire survey of students residing in the campus. The parameter for the research was ICT literacy, Wi-Fi awareness, connectivity problem, usage, gadget preference. The outcome of the finding suggest that although the calls for radical transformation in educational approaches may be legitimate it would be misleading to ground the arguments for such change solely in students’ opinion and that the infrastructure indeed shows a great deal of benefit to the student in the way they connect online.The finding also identified the problems in WiFi hotspots and coverage

No full textDistributed Multi-agent Negotiation for Wi-Fi Channel Assignment
No full textChannel allocation in dense, decentralized Wi-Fi networks is a challenging due to the highly nonlinear solution space and the difficulty to estimate the opponent’s utility model. So far, only centralized or mediated approaches have succeeded in applying negotiation to this setting. We propose the first two fully-distributed negotiation approaches for Wi-Fi channel assignment. Both of them leverage a pre-sampling of the utility space with simulated annealing and a noisy estimation of the Wi-Fi utility function. Regarding negotiation protocols, one of the approaches makes use of the Alternating Offers protocol, while the other uses the novel Multiple Offers Protocol for Multilateral Negotiations with Partial Consensus (MOPaC), which naturally matches the problem peculiarities. We compare the performance of our proposed approaches with the previous mediated approach, based on simple text mediation. A relation of Swedenborgianism and anthroposophy: The case of the Finnish author Kersti Bergroth and her novel The Living and the Dead
Full text linkMy article discusses the influence of Emanuel Swedenborg on a Finnish female author, Kersti-Bergroth (1886-1975) through one of Bergroth's novels Eläviä ja kuolleita ('The Living and the Dead', 1945). Bergroth was a prolific author with an anthroposophical bent, and an admirer of German idealism. In this particular novel Bergroth refers explicitly to Swedenborg and the story discloses a number of Sweden-borgian themes: the doctrine of correspondences; a world divided into material, spiritual, and divine realms; and communication with the spirits of the dead. As Bergroth was an active member of the anthroposophical movement, I will also consider the route, spread, and place of Swedenborg's ideas within anthroposophy and theosophy in the twentieth century
Determine activity based on the classified identity of users by using Wi-Fi monitoring
No full textThe Wi-Fi technologies are used in everyday life on numerous applications that detect the crowd information for commercial, security and other reasons. The Wi-Fi monitoring can be used for tracking people when they are moving along different access points. The results from the Wi-Fi monitoring can provide the location of the users in an area and therefore, useful information can be extracted. The goal of this project is to recognize the activity of different users for different sessions of a Wi-Fi network. The Wi- Fi dataset that is used, is acquired from the Wi-Fi network of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Initially, the estimation of the users’ occupation is determined with the use of a Markov model with the information that is derived from the Wi-Fi dataset. Their possible identity is used, in order to estimate the activity that a user is probably doing at a specific location of the research area. The results on the use of the research area, are calculated and visualised in different spatial levels, campus, building and floor level.
