Kindergartens' landscape : the effect of outdoor play space on children's play and performances / Wan Azlina Wan Ismail
Playing and moving are central in young children’s lives. Allowing the children to
experience the natural and man-made elements in their school environment would
develop their cognitive, physical, and social abilities. This study investigates the impact
of playing in outdoor play space on physical skills or motor development of
kindergarten children. The outdoor play spaces of four kindergartens’ playground were
selected to be evaluated in the case study afterwards. The research aim is to identify the
landscape features (natural and man-made) in the playground areas that offer challenge
in children play. Data of the children performances were elicited using a
phenomenological approaches by employed three major strategies include interviews,
observation and behaviour mapping as well as children participatory drawing project.
The data gathered from two sources: teachers and staffs as well as the kindergarten’s
children. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The
data advocated that the children performed dynamically during play activities in
outdoor play area particularly when they attached to the natural environment. Based on
Theory of Affordances applied in this study, the results showed that the effect of
outdoor play space on children’s play and performances were higher when they
experienced the natural and man-made elements directly. The study concluded that the
landscape features (natural and man-made) in outdoor environments fostered the
physical skill of kindergarten’s children and it should be incorporated in the design of a
kindergarten
Structural performance of steel fiber reinforced concrete two-ribbed wall panel under compressive load / Wan Azlina Wan Mohd Yusoff
This study deals with structural performance of two-ribbed wall both samples reinforces with steel fibre except one without steel fabric. Laboratory works tested two walls sample with size 1500mm x 1000mm x 75mm (height x length x width). The wall samples reinforced with steel fabric size B7 and steel fibre HE 0.75/60 with concrete grade 30. The wall panel tested under axial load connected to hydraulic jack with 2000 kN of capacity limit. The support condition of both walls is Pinned-Pinned. Analysis of results was done based on the ultimate load carrying capacity, wall displacement, mode of failure and cracking pattern. From experimental work, the ultimate load carrying capacity for wall with steel fabric (WSF) was 1590 kN and 1158.2 kN for wall without steel fabric (WOSF). Meanwhile, the theoretical calculation is 1177 kN and 999.34 kN respectively. Furthermore, the horizontal displacement was 10.79 mm for WSF and 22.84 mm for WOSF. The location of the maximum displacement is located at 1050 mm from the bottom while wall WOSF occurs approximately at 1350 mm (about 0.7H of the wall height). Wall WSF experienced crushing at the top end along load distribution area
Investigation on syngas production via biomass conversion thorugh the integration of pyrolysis and air-steam gasification processes
Fuel production from agro-waste has become an interesting alternative for energy generation due to energy policies and greater understanding of the importance of green energy. This research was carried out in a lab-scale gasifier and coconut shell was used as feedstock in the integrated process. In order to acquire the optimum condition of syngas production, the effect of the reaction temperature, equivalence ratio (ER) and steam/biomass (S/B) ratio was investigated. Under the optimized condition, H2 and syngas yield achieved to 83.3 g/kg feedstock and 485.9 g/kg feedstock respectively, while LHV of produced gases achieved to 12.54 MJ/N m3
Hydrogen-Rich Gas Production from Palm Kernel Shell by Applying Air Gasification in Fluidized Bed Reactor
An experimental study of gasification of palm kernel shell residues from the palm oil industry, as a potential hydrogen feedstock, is investigated. The gasification is conducted in a bench-scale fluidized bed gasifier with 55 mm diameter and 850 mm height. The operating conditions were studied in the following ranges: reaction temperature in gasification zone (750− 1100 °C), feeding rate (0.20−1.21 kg/h), feedstock particle size (0.1−5 mm), and equivalence ratio (ER) (0.23−0.27). The increasing temperature and equivalence ratio was found to significantly influence the gas yield (up to 90 wt % conversion on the raw biomass) at 1000 °C and hence hydrogen composition (40 vol %). The feedstock particle size and feeding rate only showed minor influence. In conclusion, palm kernel shell is a potential candidate for hydrogen production
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Single cultures of acinetobacter sp. and cellulosimicrobium sp. grown in pineapple waste: adaption study and potential in reducing COD from real textile wastewater / Nor Habibah Mohd Rosli and Wan Azlina Ahmad
Wastewater from industrial plants such as textile, electroplating and petroleum refineries contains various substances that tend to increase the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the wastewater. Therefore, it is desired to develop a process suitable for treating the wastewater to meet the regulatory limits. This work was conducted to investigate the potential of adapted single culture of A. baumannii, A.calcoaceticus and C.cellulans in reducing COD in real textile wastewater. The study was carried out by adapting each single culture (10% inoculums) to increasing concentration (1%, 2.5 %, 5%, 7.5 % and 10%) of textile wastewater. Then it was introduced to the textile effluent without pH adjustment for five days and the COD values were measured. The textile wastewater was supplemented with pineapple waste for bacterial growth and metabolism. Results obtained showed that pineapple waste was a good nutrient supply for the growth of the bacteria and the best concentration of textile wastewater for adaptation was at 2.5%. The results also showed that A.calcoaceticus shows highest COD reduction with 67% removal whereas A. baumannii and C.cellulans with 60% and
58% removal respectively. The outcome supported that the single culture used in this study showed considerably high reduction of COD from real textile wastewater
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
