An annotated catalogue of selected works for clarinet by South African composers
The dissertation consists of an annotated catalogue of nineteen selected works for clarinet by South African composers. These are presented in chronological order, based on the year of composition. A short biographyof the composer is given before the work is discussed. Of the analysed works, all those for solo clarinet or for clarinet and piano have been graded. A thesis of a similar nature, written in 1989 by L.A. Hartshorne, entitled ""The Compositions for Clarinet by South African Composers"", contains details of twenty-four works written between 1928 and circa 1981. The majority of the compositions analysed in the current dissertation were written from around 1981 onwards, and to some extent, therefore, this research could be seen as complementary to the information contained in the aforementioned thesis. An addendum lists all the South African works featuring solo clarinet that the author was able to trace. These include solo works, cham ber works for up to nineteen instruments and concerto-type works with strings or orchestra
Boris Sadovskoy as Author of Two Stories about Alexander Polezhayev
The article covers the works by the literary figure of the first half of the XX century Boris Sadovskoy (1881–1952), i.e. the critical essay “Polezhayev” (1910) and the short story «Sinking Swimmer» (1910). Particularly the methods of transforming Yekaterina Bibikova-Rayevskaya's memoir plot, which Sadovskoy borrowed, are described. The study analyzes the author's position that manifested in these works and determined the content of the conceptual design of the literary-critical and fictional stories' hero – the Russian poet Alexander Polezhayev (1804–1838). The study relevance is determined by the inconsistency in the poet's personality perception by his contemporaries. Sadovskoy believed that the tragedy of Polezhayev's creative personality lay in the conflict between its two constituents that can be conditionally called by the precedent names «Sashka» and «sinking swimmer» as well as in the poet's acute awareness of his own death. He tried to live and write with these internal conflicts managing to reach the true heights of the artist's talent. It is reported that some Sadovskoy's contemporaries disputed his interpretation of Polezhayev's personality and fate, considered it to be libel on the poet. The author mentions Alexander Blok's opinion on Boris Sadovskoy's collection of articles «Russian Kamena» as well as on Alexander Polezhayev himselfРассматриваются произведения литературного деятеля первой половины XX века Бориса Александровича Садовского (1881–1952): критический очерк «Полежаев» (1910) и рассказ «Погибший пловец» (1910). И. Полежаев

Odoardo Fialetti (1573-c.1638): the interrelation of Venetian art and anatomy, and his importance in England
Bolognese artist Odoardo Fialetti (1573 – c.1638) is a fascinating figure upon which curiously little work has been done. Though he is a rarely discussed pupil of Tintoretto, Fialetti’s oeuvre is vast (some 55 known paintings and approximately 450 prints) and incredibly diverse. His work encompasses religious subjects, portraits, books on drawing and sport, maps, and illustration for treatises on city defences, literary texts, and anatomy. His work was influential for several hundred years after his death, not only in Venice and northern Italy, but also in France where his designs were used as decoration on faïence produced at Nevers, and England, where his paintings were much admired at court. Fialetti’s close association with Sir Henry Wotton, and the careful copy of his drawing book made by Alexander Browne in the mid-seventeenth century, attest to his impact on the formation of an Italianate sensibility in the appreciation of the visual arts in Early Modern England. In the realm of science, Fialetti’s influence can be deduced from his drawings of curiously animated cadavers in detailed landscapes to those of future generations of anatomists and illustrators throughout Europe. Because of the diverse associations and projects throughout his career, the study of Fialetti is inherently interdisciplinary, encompassing the history of art, history of science and history of the Venetian book trade, as well as crossing geographical boundaries in linking Venetian art and English tastes of the late renaissance and early baroque. Through examination of his extant oeuvre, as well as discussion of lost work, I aim to recognise Fialetti’s status as an artist responding to contemporary artistic debates (disegno versus colorito), a changing cultural climate and the burgeoning importance of the printed medium

The Alexander polynomial of (1,1)-knots
In this paper we investigate the Alexander polynomial of (1, 1)-knots, which are knots
lying in a 3-manifold with genus one at most, admitting a particular decomposition. More
precisely, we study the connections between the Alexander polynomial and a polynomial
associated to a cyclic presentation of the fundamental group of an n-fold strongly-cyclic
covering branched over the knot K, which we call the n-cyclic polynomial of K. In
this way, we generalize to all (1, 1)-knots, with the only exception of those lying in
S^2 × S^1, a result obtained by Minkus for 2-bridge knots and extended by the author
and M. Mulazzani to the case of (1, 1)-knots in S^3. As corollaries some properties of
the Alexander polynomial of knots in S^3 are extended to the case of (1, 1)-knots in lens
spaces
Equivalence between best responses and undominated
For games with expected utility maximizing players whose strategy sets are finite, Pearce (1984) shows that a strategy is strictly dominated by some mixed strategy, if and only if, this strategy is not a best response to some belief about opponents' strategy choice. This note generalizes Pearce's (1984) equivalence result to games with expected utility maximizing players whose strategy sets are arbitrary compact sets.
Asymptotics of twisted Alexander polynomials and hyperbolic volume
For a hyperbolic knot and a natural number n, we consider the Alexander polynomial twisted by the n-th symmetric power of a lift of the holonomy. We establish the asymptotic behavior of these twisted Alexander polynomials evaluated at unit complex numbers, yielding the volume of the knot exterior. More generally, we prove the asymptotic behavior for cusped hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume. The proof relies on results of Müller, and Menal-Ferrer and the last author. Using the uniformity of the convergence, we also deduce a similar asymptotic result for the Mahler measures of those polynomials
