    On Technological Ground:The Art of Torsten Lauschmann

    This essay considers the relationship between the work of contemporary artist Torsten Lauschmann and themes in a growing area of research: philosophy of technology. Themes considered include relations between technology and contemporary urban dwelling, technology and the “everyday”, and Heidegger’s problematic but canonical understanding of technology not as a set of “mere means” but as a “way of revealing.” I argue that Lauschmann’s art renders these themes relevant for our increasingly technologically mediated forms of everyday experience by engaging in a paradoxical practice of creating what McLuhan called “anti-environments.” Part one relates Lauschmann’s art to three concepts surfacing in McLuhan’s late work: “figure”, “ground”, and “anti-environment.” Part two relates Lauschmann’s art to Merleau-Ponty’s critique of photography in terms of the ontology of dynamic movement. Part three relates Lauschmann’s art to Heidegger, implying a form of “affective critique” that – by questioning the environmental conditions that constitute works of art – points beyond vexed aspects of Heidegger’s approach, such as its apparent pessimism and tendency to homogenize disparate technologies. The essay’s broader argument is that Lauschmann’s art, like the philosophical reflections to which it is related, is engaged in a practice of challenging settled common-sense notions regarding technologically mediated experience. <br/

    While attending medical school at McGill, David Hubel developed an interest in the nervous system during the summers he spent at the Montreal Neurological Institute. After heading to the United States in 1954 for a Neurology year at Johns Hopkins, he was drafted by the army and was assigned to the Neuropsychiatry Division at the Walter Reed Hospital, where he began his career in research and did his first recordings from the visual cortex of sleeping and awake cats. In 1958, he moved to the lab of Stephen Kuffler at Johns Hopkins, where he began a long and fruitful collaboration with Torsten Wiesel.Born in Sweden, Torsten Wiesel began his scientific career at the Karolinska Institute, where he received his medical degree in 1954. After spending a year in Carl Gustaf Bernhard’s laboratory doing basic neurophysiological research, he moved to the United States to be a postdoctoral fellow with Stephen Kuffler. It was at Johns Hopkins where he met David Hubel in 1958, and they began working together on exploring the receptive field properties of neurons in the visual cortex. Their collaboration continued until the late seventies.Hubel and Wiesel’s work provided fundamental insight into information processing in the visual system and laid the foundation for the field of visual neuroscience. They have had many achievements, including—but not limited to—the discovery of orientation selectivity in visual cortex neurons and the characterization of the columnar organization of visual cortex through their discovery of orientation columns and ocular-dominance columns. Their work earned them the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1981, which they shared with Roger Sperry

    In 1934 Torsten Fogelqvist, a prominent member of the Swedish Academy and a well-known journalist and intellectual, visits Nazi Germany. He writes about his visit to the Third Reich in 17 articles published in the Stockholm daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The author, highly critical of the Hitler regime, scrutinizes several aspects of the nazified German society such as the attempts to re-educate the German citizen in accordance with the ideology of the new regime, the hero cult in the Nazi movement, and the relationship between the German state and the churches. In order to further an understanding of political and social developments in Germany Fogelqvist uses a specific strategy. He “translates” them into an imaginary Swedish context.     PISM glacial cycle sensitivity experiments of the Antarctic Ice Sheet

    This dataset contains PISM simulation results (http://www.pism-docs.org) of the Antarctic Ice Sheet based on code release v1.0-paleo-ensemble (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3574033). PISM is the open-source Parallel Ice Sheet Model developed mainly at UAF, USA and PIK, Germany. With the help of added python scripts, all figures can be reproduced as in the journal publication: - Albrecht et al., 2020, doi:10.5194/tc-14-599-2020. --- Data: Find PISM results as netCDF data.     This scientific document reveals the results of an empirical examination within the realm of entrepreneurial e-mail-marketing which is based on a literature review by technical author Dr. Torsten Schwarz. Using the start-up company ERGOTOPIA as a practical example, the author of the master thesis investigates whether the explanations of Dr. Schwarz match with the practical implementation of ERGOTOPIA. Precisely, the scientific paper focuses on the examination of the four aspects lead generation, newsletter-design, software-requirements and performance measurement through monitoring with regard to successful realization of e-mail-marketing campaigns. The empirical part of this examination is made of the introduction as well as the analysis of two conducted so called split-tests that compare specific aspects of the newsletter-design and measure data-driven results to show which kind of aspect produced the more successful campaign. This way the author proves whether the recommendations by Dr. Schwarz are practically relevant for the company ERGOTOPIA
