    Event experiences: design, management and impact

    The papers submitted for this PhD by publication represent research centered on event experiences and their design, management and impact. They are the result of research projects that have produced seven published peer-reviewed papers and one book. The body of work has made an original, significant and sustained contribution towards the development of an emerging field of study in events. The work has made a major contribution towards furthering understanding of the human experience that results from the management of events, their design and their impact. At the heart of this submission is a consideration for how events are experienced and what factors and components contribute to the depth of that experience. The majority of papers analyses and reflects upon the construction of experience settings (their design) and essentially seeks knowledge to identify the variables that shape any experience of events (Ryan, 2012). In doing so the research undertaken has embraced a less restrictive set of methodologies usually afforded by statistical exercises in favour of a more embodied, immersive and participative approach. This has included not only observation and autoethnography, but also reflection on that which has been observed. In turn this reflection and analysis has drawn upon a range of theories and models to advance understanding of the social occasions that we call events where human interactions with the designed programme and environment illicit a range of responses that may culminate in a memorable and unique moment in time. The research therefore touches upon the emotional response to event experiences, the study and interpretation of the meaning of events, and notably their signification to an intended audience. In the course of this research I have evaluated and reflected upon the study and practice of event management across a range of event types and genres. Seeking to initially clarify the role of design in creating event experience led me to questioning the paradigmatic model for event management and resulted in the development of an alternative consideration for event planning and management - Event Experience Design Framework (EEDF). Unlike existing models this places design as the central and pivotal driving force that inhabits all areas of the event management process and upon which all events should then be based. The contribution of this body of work can therefore be summarised as follows: 1. Development of a paradigmatic concept that places design as the central and essential practice that underpins the planned event experience. 2. Theoretical positioning of how designing event experiences impacts on stakeholders 3. Recognition and application of theoretical models and tools relevant to event design and creativity, and further use of conceptual models to analyse experiential outcomes 4. Identification and awareness of the broader socio-cultural impact of planned events This submission provides evidentiary material that I have made a positive and meaningful contribution to raising the profile of events through research, teaching and learning by an acknowledged excellence in events management education and as a recognised (and first) National Teaching Fellow in Events. Furthermore, the submission provides a reflection on this research and development that has enabled me to make such a pivotal contribution to the field. It concludes with an outline of plans for the future

    Stratified medicine for mental disorders

    There is recognition that biomedical research into the causes of mental disorders and their treatment needs to adopt new approaches to research. Novel biomedical techniques have advanced our understanding of how the brain develops and is shaped by behaviour and environment. This has led to the advent of stratified medicine, which translates advances in basic research by targeting aetiological mechanisms underlying mental disorder. The resulting increase in diagnostic precision and targeted treatments may provide a window of opportunity to address the large public health burden, and individual suffering associated with mental disorders. While mental health and mental disorders have significant representation in the "health, demographic change and wellbeing" challenge identified in Horizon 2020, the framework programme for research and innovation of the European Commission (2014-2020), and in national funding agencies, clear advice on a potential strategy for mental health research investment is needed. The development of such a strategy is supported by the EC-funded "Roadmap for Mental Health Research" (ROAMER) which will provide recommendations for a European mental health research strategy integrating the areas of biomedicine, psychology, public health well being, research integration and structuring, and stakeholder participation. Leading experts on biomedical research on mental disorders have provided an assessment of the state of the art in core psychopathological domains, including arousal and stress regulation, affect, cognition social processes, comorbidity and pharmacotherapy. They have identified major advances and promising methods and pointed out gaps to be addressed in order to achieve the promise of a stratified medicine for mental disorders

    Nearshore and inner shelf sedimentation on the east Coromandel coast, New Zealand

    The east Coromandel coastline on the northeast coast of New Zealand has been characterised by localised erosion problems since its commercial subdivision. Increasing pressures have also arisen in recent years for possible use of the adjacent continental shelf as a repository for dredge and mining tailings, and extraction of commercial aggregate and mineral deposits. This has raised the question of dynamic links between the continental shelf and local beach systems I and resulting impacts on the coastline from such activities. The east Coromandel shelf study was therefore undertaken to investigate the modern and past shelf sedimentation processes, and relate these findings to local resource management issues. The results also contribute to the present international understanding of inner shelf sedimentation processes in 'storm-dominated' shelf environments. Surficial sedimentation patterns have been examined by a variety of methods, including: the use of sea-bed drifters and Aanderaa current meters to determine the shelf hydrodynamics; the collection of 563 samples to determine surface sediment textural patterns; a detailed examination of morphological features on the sea floor through a series of 3 side-scan sonar surveys in which 620 km of sonograph and echosounding trace have been obtained; diver surveys using depth of activity rods to provide information on the mobility of surface sediments under different sea conditions; the collection, of 174 km of continuous sub-bottom seismic profiles which have been used to determine sub-surface stratigraphic patterns; and an examination of the provenance of shelf sediments through a detailed examination of their light and heavy mineralogy. The east Coromandel coast is located on an active plate margin, resulting in the presence of a steep and rocky coastline fronted by a relatively narrow continental shelf (20 to 30 km wide), and a local geology dominated by Tertiary volcanics covered by a thin veneer of more recent volcanic air fall deposits. It is also located on a lee shelf in a mid-latitude zone of dominant westerly winds, with these prevailing weather patterns disrupted by high speed east to northeasterly winds associated with the infrequent passage of subtropical low pressure systems, occluded fronts, or more infrequent decaying tropical cyclones. This physiographic setting results in spatially and temporally highly variable sedimentation patterns, with sediment transport primarily controlled by the interaction of wave oscillatory and wind-generated currents during storm conditions. However, characteristics of tide-. and oceanic current-dominated conditions also occur in some areas. And conditions generally vary along the coast from being higher energy (current-dominated) on the southern exposed coast, to lower energy (wave- or current-dominated) on the northern embayed coastline. Shelf sedimentation is inferred to occur under three different scale events of fair weather, storm, and extreme storm conditions. The model proposed involves extreme storm conditions transporting large quantities of fine nearshore sands seawards onto the inner shelf surface, where they are slowly reworked along the shelf during annual storm events and back onshore during fair weather conditions. This latter onshore return of fine sands is proposed to result from an enhanced shear stress effect of long-period swell waves over coarse megarippled inner shelf sands. Shelf sedimentation patterns within the study area are inferred to have been primarily established by processes occurring at about the time sea level stabitised 6500 years B.P. At this stage, transgressive shelf sediments were reworked into equilibrium with the regional oceanographic conditions by the winnowing of fine sand from coarser material during storms, with the fine sands subsequently transported onshore by wave-induced currents during calm periods. Depending on the volume of sediments incorporated into transgressive sand bodies and the local shelf gradients, each embayment then developed into either an integral part of the shelf transport system (usually off large estuary systems), with fine shelf sands moving onshore and forming wide barrier spits, or a closed sedimentary system unaffected by shelf sedimentation patterns (pocket embayments). Shelf equilibrium was evidently attained by the fine sands forming a steep seaward dipping concave-up nearshore profile, and coarse sands developing a flatter inner shelf profile. An autochthonous mode of shelf sedimentation characterised the east Coromandel coast in early Holocene times, and is still evident under present conditions in most areas by the cyclical reworking of fine sands between the lower nearshore and inner shelf surfaces. Most east Coromandel embayments are, however, presently characterised by varying degrees of an allochthonous mode of shelf sedimentation. This involves the deposition of very fine grained, volcanic glass-enriched terrigenous sands, which are derived from either local catchments or Bay of Plenty river systems. The east Coromandel coast generally differs from most allochthonous shelf environments because the supply of terrigenous sediments has not as yet been sufficient to blanket the lower nearshore and inner shelf surfaces on the open ocean coastlines. Two separate modes of shelf sedimentation occur at present, with a nearshore inner shelf recycling of fine allochthonous shelf sands, and an open exchange of terrestrial autochthonous deposits from the upper nearshore surface to the mid shelf plain. The results of the study suggest that coastal erosion problems can largely be resolved by establishing stable incipient and frontal dune systems along the coast. and encouraging accretion by renourishment from adjacent infilling harbour deposits. The study has also shown that the dispersion of dredged sediments provides potential benefits to the coast in terms of promoting beach accretion, and that sand and mineral extraction can proceed without adverse coastal erosion effects, provided the extraction does not interfere with the natural shelf sedimentation system

    Morphological and genetic diversity of Tetragonisca angustula (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Cundinamarca, Colombia

    IlustracionesTetragonisca angustula es una especie del Neotrópico, conocida como abeja angelita, que se ha adaptado a ambientes con alta presión antrópica por lo que es la especie más ampliamente utilizada para cría artificial. Es posible que su amplia distribución geográfica, desde México hasta Argentina, posibilite diferentes poblaciones con características genéticas distintivas que les permiten adaptarse a los ambientes naturales que ocupan. Se presentan aquí para ocho poblaciones de abejas forrajeras de Tetragonisca angustula de Colombia, los resultados de análisis utilizando morfometría lineal de caracteres morfológicos asociados con percepción visual, olfativa y de motricidad, así como los cambios en el tamaño y forma alar utilizando morfometría geométrica. Estos resultados se complementan con el análisis de secuencias de la región minibarcode de la subunidad I del gen citocromo oxidasa I para Colombia obtenidas en este estudio y las registradas para Brasil y Costa Rica. De manera general, se encontró que la longitud de la tibia posterior y la distancia interantenal constituyen caracteres robustos para discriminar entre poblaciones de la abeja angelita. De manera general, con todos los análisis, las poblaciones de Villavicencio, Meta y Medellín, Antioquia se caracterizaron particularmente y aparecen como poblaciones separadas de las demás y claramente distinguibles por rasgos morfológicos y moleculares, en tanto que las poblaciones de Cundinamarca, con excepción de Fusagasugá formaron un macro-grupo. Medellín fue la población con mayor riqueza genética seguida de Villavicencio, en tanto que Fusagasugá siempre estuvo separada de las demás poblaciones de Cundinamarca cuando se analizó el ADNmt de sus poblaciones. La altitud, el tipo de nido del cual provienen las abejas, ya sea natural o de caja racional, pero de manera particular, la ubicación geográfica de poblaciones separadas por las cordilleras, constituyeron factores fundamentales moldeando los caracteres morfológicos y genéticos de las poblaciones estudiadas. Debido a que se reconocieron poblaciones claramente diferenciadas, debe evitarse el traslado de nidos y preservar las poblaciones naturales de la abeja angelita en Colombia como parte de su soberanía en biodiversidad y territorio. It is possible that their wide geographical distribution, from Mexico to Argentina, allows different populations with distinctive genetic characteristics that allow them to adapt to the natural environments they occupy. Presented here for eight populations of forage bees of Tetragonisca angustula of Colombia, the results of analysis using linear morphometry of morphological characters associated with visual, olfactory and motor perception, as well as changes in size and wing shape using geometric morphometry. These results are complemented by the analysis of sequences of the minibarcode region of subunit I of cytochrome oxidase I gene for Colombia obtained in this study and those recorded for Brazil and Costa Rica. In general, it was found that the length of the posterior tibia and the interantenal distance constitute robust characters to discriminate between populations of the little angel bee In general, with all the analyses, the populations of Villavicencio, Meta and Medellín, Antioquia were particularly characterized and appear as separate populations from the others and clearly distinguishable by morphological and molecular traits, while the populations of Cundinamarca, with the exception of Fusagasugá, formed a macro-group. Medellin was the population with the highest genetic richness followed by Villavicencio, while Fusagasugá was always separated from the other populations of Cundinamarca when the mtDNA of its populations was analyzed. The altitude, the type of nest from which bees come, either natural or rational box, but in particular, the geographical location of populations separated by mountain ranges, were fundamental factors shaping the morphological and genetic characteristics of the populations studied.
