Sounding underground: listening, performing and transforming the commuting experience

    No full text
In 1997 the creation of a virtual underground was somehow a bizarre idea that the author attempted to realize. First, the representation of metaphors of a metro in a multimedia format opened ideas of what could be possible to achieve on the Internet, e.g. how sound fragments uploaded by different people could run on the same navigational interface and what this mixture is telling us about our urban culture. How does it sound? Listening was the practice selected to perceive the whole of space and time relationships within a journey, and how these resonate with each individual. First in London, and later interconnecting the experience with Mexico and Paris, the author followed a mixed ethnographic method with commuters in each city, involving them in reflective and performative listening practices. Sounding Underground is the resulting interface that links the three cities’ metros, along with their cultures, evoking social, symbolic and political perceptions for each listener. The process followed by participants, and the interaction with the environment by users on the Internet, have opened paths for the acknowledgement and transformation of this experience, as each underground sonic journey becomes potentially a metaphor of a commuter’s life

The feminisms of what was called the Second-wave, more specifically the Southern Cone ones, are the object of my study. And it was through these feminisms that the issue of housework as a problem caught my attention. The relation between women and housework, even though affirmed by the feminisms and the gender studies as culturally built, has its main contribution in the naturalization of these functions. Family and specially motherhood show themselves as the main legitimizers of this relation, that brings itself the weight of centuries of reaffirmation that #being a woman# means taking care, reclusion, dedication, patience; means turning to the private sphere, being a wife and a mother. In this research I had the purpose of writing a history of the discussion about the housework and domestic labour in the Second-wave feminisms of Southern Cone, using as source the printed production of these feminisms, mostly periodicals. These are feminists newspapers produced # or that circulated # in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It is important to note that the specified period is given by the sources I have used and, through them, I intend to settle a discussion about the problematization of the domestic work in Southern Cone Second-wave feminisms, starting from a historiographic perspective inserted in the feminist and gender studies, with the support of bibliography contemporary to the applied documents and current bibliography. The dissertation is divided in two parts: first refers to the problematizations about female housework, the housekeeper one, and second refers to the problematizations of female domestic labour, refering to the domestic employee. During the research it was possible to observe that many problematizations on this issue, in the consulted periodicals, are common in the different countries and generally involve complex issues as public and private spheres, gender and intra-gender issues, of race and/or ethnicity and of maintenance of traditional values

Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 65-67).In this thesis, we study the robustness of complex supply chain systems from a network science perspective. Through the simulation of targeted attacks to nodes and edges using different hierarchical measures from network science to select the most relevant components, we evaluate the extent to which local centrality measures can estimate the relevance of a node in maintaining the connectivity and the efficient communication across the network. We perform the experiments on two real-world supply chain data sets, and on an ensemble of networks generated from network growth models that share simple topological properties with the real-world networks. It is found that all models produce more robust networks than the data sets of choice. In addition, the removal of high average neighbor degree nodes seems to have little impact on the connectivity of the network, and a highly varying impact on the efficiency of the network. Finally, robustness against targeted node and edge removal is found to be more associated to the number of nodes and links in the network than to more complex network measures such as the degree distribution.by María Ximena Rueda Guerrero.M. [...]The author of the thesis benefited from a four-year National CSIC-I3P PhD fellowship (I3P-BPD2004) between 2005 and 2008. Within the framework of the I3P program, three short-stay grants allowed the author to complement her study at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Menlo Park, San Francisco (CA, USA) in 2006 (3 months), at the Oregon University in Corvallis (OR, USA) in 2007 (1.5 months), and at the Geological and Nuclear Sciences Institute (GNS) in Wellington (New Zealand) in 2008 (6 months). The data used in this work was acquired and interpreted within the framework of Spanish Plan Nacional I+D+I Projects IMPULS (REN 2003-05996-MAR) funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología (MCYT), and EVENT, consisting of two sub-projects (CGL2006-12861-C02-01 (land) and CGL2006-12861-C02-02 (marine)) funded by the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (MEC). In addition, the work was also supported by the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program under the “Topo-Iberia” project (CSD 2006-0004). The COCSABO-MEC allocated ship-time on national large-scale facilities, such as the RV Hesperides, RV Garcia del Cid and RV Sarmiento del Gamboa, which allowed carrying out the IMPULS (2006), EVENT-SHELF (2008) and EVENT-DEEP (2010) marine cruises. The Acción Complementaria “Trincheras” (CGL2004-20214-E) of the MCYT enabled the performance of an extensive trenching survey and a subsequent dating analysis. Acciones complementarias “Streamer” (CTM2004-21203-E), “EVENT-Shelf” (CTM2008-03346-E/MAR) and “Sparker” (CTM2008-03208-E/MAR) from the MEC made it possible renting specific high-resolution seismic equipments to achieve the resolution required in marine paleoseismologyPeer Reviewe

    Get PDF
I propose reading José Aricó’s “Marx y América Latina” as a work in which the author discusses Leopoldo Zea´s proposals to study the history of ideas in such a way that it also relates to Carlos Real de Azúa´s approaches: the obsessions and terms of a possible “esoteric history” or a “philosophical research”

Psiquismo e Historias: Modos de Inscripción de lo Subjetivo

As a consequence of the current epistemological argument social sciences have had important methodological adjustments and even a revision of its main foundations. Psychology and history have not escaped the controversy. This paper analyses theoretical and methodological similarities and differences between history and psychology. In such endeavor, we Will take advantage offour different and relatively new perspectives: new history, women 's history, history of collective mentalities and psychohistory. The first three perspectives emerge as internal revisions of history while psychohistory attempts to apply a psychological perspective to historical events. Psychohistory proposes a review of historical events from a psychological comprehension of human mentality, especially of human motivations. A discussion of reciprocal influences and multiple understandings of subjective experiences concludes the article.
