Rethinking sentencing decisions and its justifications for animal cruelty
This study identifies the imprisonment sentences that citizens desire for animal cruelty perpetrators. Furthermore, we examine which of the four justifications–retribution, incapacitation, general deterrence, and rehabilitation–is preferred when determining prison sentence length. By comparing the same abuse to that of a child victim who shares the same “need-to-protect” characteristics, this study will shed light on the public's perceptions and attitudes toward animal abuse
