Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Yue

    No full text
In their article Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Daiyun Yue Hui Zhang and Daiyun Yue present a review of the discipline of comparative literature based on an interview with Yue (2010). Because Yue\u27s work with comparative literature is intertwined with her personal journey, the interview sheds light on other Chinese scholars and their work who would not be known audiences outside China. The interview also touches on the academic and political reasons why the joint dualisms of ancient/modern and Chinese/foreign continue to be major structuring principles of the discipline in China, as well as how the development of the discipline in China was influenced by engagements with Anglophone U.S. and Canadian scholars and institutions

Migrant workers, collaborative research and spatial pressures : an interview with Meng Yue

    No full text
In July last year I had the opportunity to interview Meng Yue, literary scholar and author of Shanghai and the Edges of Empire (2006). Meng Yue has been collaborating with Toronto-based architect and artist Adrian Blackwell for a number of years, with their students from literature and architecture undertaking highly interesting research on the peripheral zones of Beijing. Questions of peri-urban food production, land use, resource distribution and the multiplication of labour skills have framed these investigations. The interview below is extracted from a considerably longer discussion we had in Beijing during the late summer of 2007, half of which was lost to the faulty battery of an ipod (the rest remains to be transcribed from video…)

Measuring sprawl in the United States: a comparative analysis of procedures and results

    No full text
Sprawl is significant, low-density development taking place at the periphery wherein there exists limited infrastructure and public services. It has been the subject of much research, due to its widespread occurrence. Previous empirical studies of sprawl measurement had three significant weaknesses: 1) incomplete coverage of the geography being measured; 2) an absence of regional differences in the density variable, and 3) a lack of exclusion of undevelopable lands when calculating the density of an area. In an effort to overcome these shortcomings, this study: 1) measures sprawl for all 3091 counties in the US using economic areas (EA) to group counties; 2) uses variable densities (locally-determined cultural densities) in the sprawl calculation; and 3) calculates “refined densities” for all states and counties in the US by excluding undevelopable lands from the density calculation. Further, the research results included here are compared with those of Rolf Pendall (1999), Robert W. Burchell (2002), and Reid Ewing (2003b), in order to ascertain the impact of their more comprehensive measurement methods on sprawl measurement results. Based upon accurate variable densities, one of six county land use types (urban center, urban, suburban, rural center, rural, undeveloped) is assigned to each US county; a sprawl/non-sprawl is then determined for each county. As a result, out of all 3091 US counties, 492 experience sprawl development during the 2000 to 2020 time period. Over 80 percent (or 396 counties) of these 492 sprawling counties are rural or undeveloped counties; the remaining one-fifth are developing suburban and rural center counties. With no exception, the “refined density” of an individual state is greater than its “gross density.” About 65 percent (or 32) of US states have “refined densities” that are at least 1.2 times their original gross densities. Several conclusions can be drawn using the comparative analyses included here. First, sprawl research must focus on the nation as a whole, or on select component regions. Second, variable density is crucial to the accurate calculation urban versus rural counties nationally. Third, developable land must be employed when calculating variable density (i.e. undevelopable lands must be excluded from the density calculation).Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Yue W

    Pedagogical Questions in Parent-Child Conversations

    No full text
Questioning is a core component of formal pedagogy. Parents commonly question children, but do they use questions to teach? This article defines "pedagogical questions" as questions for which the questioner already knows the answer and intended to help the questionee learn. Transcripts of parent-child conversations were collected from the CHILDES database to examine the frequency and distribution of pedagogical questions. Analysis of 2,166 questions from 166 mother-child dyads and 64 father-child dyads (child's age between 2 and 6 years) showed that pedagogical questions are commonplace during day‐to‐day parent-child conversations and vary based on child's age, family environment, and historical era. The results serve as a first step toward understanding the role of parent-child questions in facilitating children's learning.Preprint provided, so should not violate copyright, embargoPeer reviewe

The Language Choices in the Personal Social Domain of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community: Cases Analysis and Comparison of Three Female Yue Community Members

    No full text
While Yue is the predominant language in certain regions of Malaysia, previous sociolinguistics studies have mostly focused on the usage of other Sinitic languages in the local context. The discussion of the situation of Yue in certain regions is relatively limited. The author conducted a survey with three Chinese female members of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community from August 2023 to May 2024 to investigate their language choices. This paper summarizes the findings of the survey, describing and comparing the interviewees’ language choices in the family and friend occasions, which are parts of the personal social domain. It then contrasts these findings with existing large-scale language surveys conducted in Malaysia, aiming to enhance the sociolinguistic understanding of the Kuala Lumpur Yue Community

This bachelor thesis was about a marketing plan for XYY Art Center - a Chinese company which mainly offers art lessons for 3-14 years old Chinese children. The author did two month practical training in this company and found this company did not have a marketing plan and they urgently need one because their business was not going well. Marketing plan plays one of the most important role in today’s business organizations. A well written marketing plan is always the key to success. It is hard for a company to thrive in 21st century without having a solid marketing plan. The aim of this thesis was to help XYY Art Center attract more customers and increase net profits in the future. The objective of the thesis was to create a marketing plan for XYY Art Center. An online customer survey was conducted in this thesis. Both quantitative data and qualitative data were collected and analyzed from the survey. Useful suggestions were generated from the customer research and based on the results, the author was able to give practical recommendations on improving the customer services, the brand awareness as well as the customer relationships. The foremost job for XYY Art Center was to start doing the social media promotion. Besides, redesigning the course contents was also a big change for the company which they need to take into considerations

In studying the Japanese language there are many things that must be understood such as verbs, particles, adjectives and conjunctions. From existing various conjunctions, the author conducted an analysis of the conjunctions yue ni and shitagatte which has the same meaning but different in its use. The research method used was literature research method is to retrieve data from the Japanese newspaper website asahi.com. The purpose of this study is to investigate the function of conjunctions yue ni and shitagatte and know when to use shitagatte and when to use yue ni. After conducting an analysis of the 3 articles in which contains shitagatte and 3 articles in which contains yue ni, the authors conclude that the sentence after shitagatte only emphasize on the effect or outcome of the sentence before shitagatte, while on sentences after yue ni, in addition to a result or the results also contained elements of desire. </jats:p

Formation and reactivity of allenes and spirodiepoxides

    No full text
Disclosed are the studies on allene and functionalized medium sized ring synthesis as well as applications of spirodiepoxide based methods. A new method of making allenes via C-C bond fragmentation was developed by which, most notably, an enantioenriched functionalized cyclic allene was synthesized. Mechanistic studies provide a framework for understanding this reaction in relation to other known modes of fragmentation. The synthesis of a chiral cyclononadienone was completed. This product has been shown to be a key intermediate towards many members of the xenicane family. Three epoxomicin analogues were synthesized. The issue of selectivity in allene oxidation was addressed in the course of this study. A model study towards erythronolide A was completed in which the feasibility of selective double cuprate addition to a bis[spirodiepoxide] macrolactone controlled by the macrocyclic environment was demonstrated. Lastly, the development of new reactions using spirodiepoxides to directly access densely functionalized structures in single- or two-flask procedures is reported.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Yue Zhan
