No full textAt last six years later I have had a chance to enjoy this lovely little -- and apparently quite famous -- parable. A man finds a camel chasing him. He arrives at a well and climbs a tree. Soon he looks down into the well and sees a dragon with mouth open waiting for him to fall. In the meantime, two mice, one white and one black, gnaw away on his tree. At some point their efforts will doom him. In the midst of all this threat, the man sees some berries and enjoys them. Rückert lays out the parable. We are all the man. The dragon is death. The camel is life's Angst und Not. The mice are day and night. The point: enjoy berries while you can! Du bist's, der zwischen Tod und Leben/am gruenen Strauch der Welt musst schweben. Iran, W Afghanistan, W Pakistan; isolated populations in Qatar and UAE. DISTRIBUTION IN IRAN. Fig. 144. Central and eastern desert basins from Esfahan and Semnan Prov. south to Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchistan Prov. HABITAT. Sandy soil sometimes encrusted with salt. Anderson (1993) found all three Iranian species syntopic in the Zabol area (northern Sistan and Baluchistan Prov.). REMARKS. This species was previously considered a subspecies of T. scincus (Schlegel, 1858), and although it is currently regarded as a full species (Macey et al. 2005; Mozaffari & Parham 2007; Gardner 2013), its elevation to species status has not been fully clarified yet. Teratoscincus zarudnyi Nikolsky, 1896 also described from Iran is a younger synonym of T. keyserlingii. REFERENCES. 2ND-ORDER RAMAN-SPECTRA OF DIAMOND FROM AB-INITIO PHONON CALCULATIONS
No full textThe second-order Raman spectra of diamond and silicon have been calculated using ab initio phonons and phenomenological polarizability coefficients. The sharp peak in the spectrum of diamond near the two-phonon cutoff is explained by a maximum in the vibrational density of states; this maximum originates from the uppermost phonon branch whose frequencies are calculated to have a minimum at the Brillouin-zone center. This frequency minimum as well as the sharp Raman peak are unique to diamond and do not occur for the other group-IV semiconductors. In our calculation based on harmonic ab initio lattice dynamics neither two-phonon bound states nor polarizability matrix element effects are needed to explain the peak, and we feel that the longstanding controversy about its origin has been resolved

The meeting has continued annually and boasts over 3,000 attendees in person and virtually. This memoir is Katina’s diary and story of the Charleston Conference and its development concurrently with her career as a professional librarian. Over the last 45 years, there have been massive changes in scholarly communication, changes that Katina has been at the heart of. Endobronchial donor pre-treatment with ventavis: is a second administration during reperfusion beneficial to optimize post-ischemic function of non-heart beating donor lungs?
No full textBACKGROUND: Lung retrieval from non-heart-beating donors (NHBD) has been introduced into clinical practice successfully. However, because of potentially deleterious effects of warm ischemia on microvascular integrity, use of NHBD lungs is limited by short tolerable time periods before preservation. Recently, improvement of NHBD graft function was demonstrated by donor pre-treatment using aerosolized Ventavis (Schering Inc., Berlin, Germany). Currently, there is no information whether additional application of this approach in reperfusion can further optimize immediate graft function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Asystolic pigs (n = 5/group) were ventilated for 180-min of warm ischemia (groups 1-3). In groups 2 and 3, 100 microg Ventavis were aerosolized over 30-min using an ultrasonic nebulizer (Optineb). Lungs were then retrogradely preserved with Perfadex and stored for 3-h. After left lung transplantation and contralateral lung exclusion, grafts were reperfused for 6-h. Only in group 3, another dose of 100 microg Ventavis was aerosolized during the first 30-min of reperfusion. Hemodynamics, pO2/FiO2 and dynamic compliance were monitored continuously and compared to controls. Intraalveolar edema was quantified stereologically, and extravascular-lung-water-index (EVLWI) was measured. Statistics comprised ANOVA analysis with repeated measurements. RESULTS: Dynamic compliance was significantly lower in both Ventavis groups, but additional administration did not result in further improvement. Oxygenation, pulmonary hemodynamics, EVLWI and intraalveolar edema formation were comparable between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Alveolar deposition of Ventavis in NHBD lungs before preservation significantly improves dynamic lung compliance and represents an important strategy for improvement of preservation quality and expansion of warm ischemic intervals. However, additional application of this method in early reperfusion is of no benefit
